In the past several decades, scores of books about mentoring and librarianship have been published. There are academic articles, webinars, and workshops that librarians can use to learn more about why mentoring is important and how to be a good mentor. However, in my own experience, most of these resources explore mentoring from the perspective of the mentor, not the mentee.

Academic library outreach and student engagement initiatives often strive to connect students to learning spaces, resources, and experts. Librarians do this work to raise awareness of services and to remove barriers so students feel more comfortable seeking help. Additionally, these activities promote the academic library as a hub of engagement, innovation, and continual learning to various user groups. Unfortunately, because these learning experiences can often be unique or serendipitous, measuring how these efforts are contributing to the library’s teaching, learning, and research missions can be difficult. The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) presents important opportunities that can transform learning, but many academic librarians at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln (UNL) struggle to find a scholarly center when their teaching roles are frequently that of external collaborator. Challenges such as access to student data, meaningful evaluations of instruction, limited opportunities for funding and professional development, and uncertainty over how to negotiate for these have contributed to librarians remaining on the periphery of SoTL work. Hoping to overcome some of these hurdles, UNL librarians are developing a community of practice (CoP) around teaching and learning.

An Ongoing Treasure Hunt: One Library’S Practical Experiences Documenting Post-Cancellation Perpetual Access, Nancy S. Donahoo, Arthur Aguilera

Albertsons Library embarked on a practical effort this past year to document post-cancellation perpetual access for those electronic journal titles that had been or were part of large package purchases. Documenting entitled content was challenging and hampered by limits to accounting records maintained at the library and university; a change in the library’s integrated library system (ILS); limited or incomplete access to third-party subscription agent order and payment records; and changes or the demise of consortia. Decisions were made to work with the known more recent electronic journal content purchased, and to work backwards from there. Procedures for creating standardized …

Academic libraries have long had print journal collections to support the university’s discovery and research needs. However, they are also continually challenged with needs for relevant content, cost control, and space issues; some academic libraries have downsized their print journal collections as a result. Many academic libraries are replacing some print journal subscriptions with online subscriptions and supplementing with open access journals. Pittsburg State University’s (PSU) Axe Library faces the challenge of providing journal access in order to support the university’s needs and stay on budget. This collection is part of the Lincoln Group of Boston Collection.

The Arthur Lloyd Hayden Scrapbook Collection primarily consists of newspaper and magazine clippings pertaining to Lincoln from the late 1940s until the early 1960s. While some of these articles give a historical overview of Lincoln’s life and presidency, many depict him as a figure of mid-1900s popular culture, a strength of the collection. The collection also consists of contemporary book reviews, pamphlets, brochures, and prints all related to Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. Changing user needs have created new opportunities for libraries, requiring evolving leadership practices that support innovation and rapid change. Design thinking can provide leaders with a concrete process to move toward action. The authors – one an executive administrator at a large, multi-branch public library, the other an academic librarian who leads a small team – share how design thinking has positively influenced their leadership practices. The benefits of implementing this flexible process have included improved user experience, more creative solutions, wise investments, staff empowerment, increased transparency and trust, and employee learning and development. As pressure increases for librarians and administrators to demonstrate the value of academic libraries, there is a parallel concern regarding student data privacy in terms of learning analytics and other data tracking methods used by universities. The LGBTQ+ community has had to continuously fight for their rights, including their right to be represented in the library. This toolkit provides instruction on how to develop and manage a library collection of LGBTQ+ children’s picture books. It is split into four sections that include a guide to evaluating materials, recommended picture books, a guide to fighting censorship, and a list of recommended resources.

I also explore the accessibility of tabletop role-playing games and how they can be made more accessible. Just-In-Time Or Just-In-Case? Time, Learning Analytics, And The Library, Karen P. Nicholson, Nicole Pagowsky, Maura Seale

In this essay, we explore the timescapes of library learning analytics. We contend that just-in-time strategies, a feature of late capital modes of production, New Public Management, and future-oriented risk-management strategies inform the adoption of learning analytics. Learning analytics function as a form of temporal governmentality: current performance is scrutinized in order to anticipate future performance and prescribe just-in-time interventions to mitigate risk—not only for the student but also for the institution. Ultimately, we argue that using time as a lens to examine discourses surrounding library learning analytics reveals the temporalities reproduced in this discourse, which obscures questions of power, …
