Responsible Collaborations: Scholarship And Cultural Heritage Assets, Irene Herold

All Faculty Articles

I recently served as a national consultant on collaborations between libraries and museums. There are not that many articles published about collaborations and cultural heritage collections, although I suspect many unreported activities are being done in the field. From the 2009 program my College Libraries Section (CLS) committee developed when I was CLS chair on town/gown relationships (Our Town, Common Ground) with public and academic librarian panelists to a 2016 article, cultural heritage institutions and collaboration has been a focus of mine. My life and work experiences gave me a broad exposure to a wide variety of cultures, cultural norms, …

Academic Library Collections In The Age Of Extended Reality (Xr), Joseph Riggie, Ken Fujiuchi

Library Faculty Publications

Extended Reality (XR) introduces a new way to preserve, record, and manage content. Collections traditionally focus on content in the form of books, documents, and multimedia. XR is a new form of media that can be difficult to integrate into current collections. In addition, through linked data, we can preserve the context that surrounds the content as well. Finally, XR media can incorporate digital manifestations of items from a library collection within its application. This technology review will explore the possibilities of XR in collection management, focusing on XR as a user interface, the impact on inventory management, and digital …

More Than A Pretty Interface: The Louisiana Digital Library As A Data Hub, Sl Ziegler

Faculty Publications

The Louisiana Digital Library (LDL) is an online platform for libraries, museums, archives, and historical organizations across the state. The books, manuscripts, oral histories, maps, and photographs held in the LDL showcase the cultural resources of Louisiana. The interface enables users to discover materials through search and browse, and to view and interact with these materials. The metadata about these items is also a great asset. When explored in their entirety, the data held in the LDL is as valuable as the digital facsimiles. The LDL may be conceptualized as a data hub, a place to gather and share the …

Embracing Technical Service's Public Service Role, Jeffrey M. Mortimore

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

The traditional distinction between the “front office” and the “back office” fails to align with contemporary technical services practice. Today, technical and public services personnel are equally involved in providing resources, services, and support direct to patrons, demanding communication, collaboration, and public service competencies library-wide. Drawing upon participants' experiences, this roundtable will discuss the importance of communication and referral skills commonly associated with reference and instruction to the delivery of effective technical services. Discussion questions include:

  • What are the emerging points of contact between technical and public services, and technical services and patrons? What role has the ongoing transition to …

Inclusion In The Curriculum: How To Weave Diversity Into Online Teaching, Kim M. Thompson, Clayton A. Copeland Feb 2019

Inclusion In The Curriculum: How To Weave Diversity Into Online Teaching, Kim M. Thompson, Clayton A. Copeland

Faculty Publications

There is a fairly popular billboard that shouts “Unsee this!” at drivers along highways, enticing local businesses to rent that billboard space. Yet, no one who drives by will be able to unsee it. This same idea applies to fundamental theories of inclusion when applied in the higher education classroom. Once students “see” inclusion as core to their field of study, the workplace, and daily life, it will be very difficult for them to overlook, or “unsee,” these basic principles in their practice as professionals after graduation. Educators use theoretical frameworks in foundational and core courses to help students feel …
