Making Sense Of Sense-Making: Uncovering Dervin’S Hermeneutic Intentions, Roger Chabot Mar 2019

Making Sense Of Sense-Making: Uncovering Dervin’S Hermeneutic Intentions, Roger Chabot

FIMULAW

Brenda Dervin’s Sense-Making metatheory is a popular theory within Library and Information for helping to describe the nature of information needs and the seeking of information. However, both Savolainen (1999) and Kari (2001) have noted how Dervin is surprisingly vague about gap-bridging, a fundamental component of her theory and ultimately fails to describe how sense is actually made (Kari, 2001, p. 36). However, Dervin notes that individuals construct “interpretive bridges over a gappy reality” (Dervin, 1999b, p. 730), suggesting that the crux of Sense-Making is a hermeneutic process. Based on a textual analysis (McKee, 2003) of Dervin’s writing on Sense-Making …

Authors’ Reception 2019 - Janet Morgan Riggs, Janet M. Riggs

2018 College Authors

One of the things that we celebrate here tonight at this reception is the strong relationship between faculty and students. The mentoring of student research and creative activity is so important here at Gettysburg—and it’s especially gratifying for faculty and students alike when that collaboration results in co-authored publications. But whether or not publication is an outcome, the opportunity for students to work closely with faculty is something that we offer in a way that not many colleges and universities do. So I thank you all for that—for enriching our students’ education in that way.

I also want to take …

Apples And Glaciers: Students Spark Interdisciplinary Research Collaborations, Salma Monani

2018 College Authors

It is an honor to be here. I want to begin by thanking the library for supporting so many of us in our creative and scholarly work. Quite frankly, it would be impossible for me to do my work without these amazing librarians. They deserve the real applause at this event!

Robin invited my colleague, Dr. Sarah Principato and me to give these opening remarks. Sarah, however, had to give a research talk at Franklin & Marshall, so she was unsure if she would be back in time. I am happy to see that she has been able to make …

From Decoder Rings To Deep Fakes: Translating Complex Technologies For Legal Education, Rachel S. Evans, Jason Tubinis

Presentations

“Technological developments are disrupting the practice of law” is a common refrain, but the last few years has seen some particularly complex pieces of technology become the hot new thing in legal tech. This session will look at blockchain, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and ‘Deep Fakes’ as examples of how librarians can stay abreast of technological developments and inform themselves about their impacts in the legal profession. Then we will look at how to translate the complexities and jargon of these examples into lessons for for-credit courses, one-off informational sessions, or meetings with stakeholders.

Textbook Affordability Is A Social Justice Issue: How Open Textbooks Are Paving The Way To Equality In Higher Education, Sarah Appedu

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Textbook affordability is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for students. Access to textbooks is essential for students to be able to meet their learning needs and have equal opportunity to excel as their peers. Open Textbooks are one response to this issue, but while most library outreach is focused on faculty members, students are an underutilized voice in the open education conversation. This presentation aims to educate students on what open textbooks are, what their limitations are, and how all students can participate in advocating for more affordable course materials.

Citation Management Tools, Undergraduate Research Practices, And The Myth Of The Digital Native, Julia Glauberman Mar 2019

Citation Management Tools, Undergraduate Research Practices, And The Myth Of The Digital Native, Julia Glauberman

Library Scholarship

In an ideal world, citation management tools save researchers time by keeping content organized and automating rote tasks, a feat made possible by technological progress and a common set of workflows and habits of mind shared by all researchers. Unfortunately, we don’t live in an ideal world. Instead, we live in a world where citation management tools are prone to error, and a wide gulf separates the practices of novice researchers from those of expert researchers. Promoting citation management tools uncritically, without considering how they fit into students’ research processes, may undermine librarians’ ability to effectively help students. This problem …

Going Beyond "Learn To Code" In The Library: Partnerships And Resources For Delivering Successful Advanced Technical Training, Jim Craner, Lori Bowen Ayre

Collaborative Librarianship

As more libraries offer "learn to code" and digital skills training programs to patrons of all ages, there is a significant opportunity to offer more sophisticated services for advanced learners, even up to the level of professional workforce development. By partnering with local institutions or online programs, libraries can potentially offer in-house training to their community members who might not be otherwise well-suited for traditional in-person or online training programs. In addition, we've identified a wealth of resources that libraries can use to support self-directed learners and institutional online learners in the community. We also note the critical importance of …
