University Libraries Librarian and Staff Presentations
The Poster Presentation will consist of the reasons and steps taken to reevaluate/reprocess the Holt-Atherton Special Collections book collection, and the results. When the project was first started, it was found that several of the books thought to be cataloged were actually not. Now that the project is drawing to a close all previous items not discoverable can now be found and are accessible to our patrons. The project also brought to light several “hidden treasures” that can now be used in classes given in Special Collections. For example a fore-edged painted book that was unknown is not cataloged as …

Information about faculty and their publications can be found in library databases such as the Library of Congress Name Authority File, VIAF, WorldCat, and institutional repositories; in identifier registries like ORCID and ISNI; and on academic social networking sites like Academia, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate, but the way search engines use such identifiers and profiles is unclear. Therefore, researchers at a large comprehensive university conducted several rounds of web searching before and after the creation and modification of faculty authority records. The sample consisted of 24 faculty and the 35 publications associated with their authorities. The researchers searched for the …

Communities In The Crossfire: Models For Public Library Action, Renate L. Chancellor
Collaborative Librarianship
From mass shootings in churches, nightclubs and schools to protests of statutes, discrimination and police brutality, civil unrests have become a part of our everyday life. Over the last decade, communities across the country have experienced an unprecedented number of crises that have been particularly hard-felt. Libraries in these towns often serve as safe spaces. However, not all libraries have risen to this challenge. This paper offers exemplary models for public library action during times of crisis and contends that based on the current social climate, there needs to be a new paradigm for public library services.

Libraries & Librarians In The Aftermath: Our Stories & Ourselves, Ashley R. Maynor
Collaborative Librarianship
Following her experience of the Virginia Tech campus shooting in 2007, filmmaker and librarian Ashley Maynor set out to explore the phenomenon of temporary memorials and so-called “grief archives” using both documentary filmmaking and other qualitative research methods. She subsequently published her findings about Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and other public tragedies as Response to the Unthinkable: Collecting & Archiving Condolence & Temporary Memorial Materials Following Public Tragedies, to help fill a large gap in LIS literature about the best practices for libraries in responding to crises in their communities.
In the years since, her opinions and perspective on …
