"Such is the case for the records of many religious communities that are coming to completion, closure, or merging with other religious communities." Although many congregations have formed or are considering forming joint archives and heritage centers, congregations most at risk are outlier congregations, such as the Sisters of the Holy Family (SHF) in Fremont, California. These obstacles often stem from a combination of misunderstanding and/or misplaced priorities at both the unit and administrative levels. Challenges in this case study include a number of factors: no marketing strategy at the administrative level, a lack of understanding from colleagues generally, little time to complete tasks or improve marketing skills, and no dedicated funding. To address these challenges the authors embarked on an internal marketing campaign engaged extensively on social media …

Review Of Science In The Archives: Pasts, Presents, Futures, Charlie Harper Jul 2019

Review Of Science In The Archives: Pasts, Presents, Futures, Charlie Harper

Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship

Review of Science in the Archives, an edited volume of 12 essays that emerged from a working group held at the Max Planck Institute for History and Science in 2013 and 2014. This working group sought to develop a shared framework for thinking about how the sciences choose to remember past findings and plan future research (p. vii). The quest for such a shared framework, by necessity, calls for the crossing of long-standing temporal and disciplinary boundaries that artificially silo and separate. Drawing together a cohort of practitioners to build such a framework is no easy task, but this compendium …

Theory And The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: Inquiry And Practice With Intention, Nancy L. Chick Jul 2019

Theory And The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: Inquiry And Practice With Intention, Nancy L. Chick

Faculty Publications

Theory in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is the conceptual basis for the practice of SoTL—or, more precisely, the conceptual bases for the practices of SoTL—as well as the bodies of knowledge, methodological assumptions, and explanations of phenomena that are deployed (explicitly or implicitly) from a range of contexts within SoTL. Put another way, theory is thinking on a meta level, a metacognitive move in which practitioners become aware, critical, and intentional of how and why they are doing their practice. It involves taking stock of the existing conversations to move beyond definitions, to critically evaluate gaps and …
