On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck New Jersey with catastrophic results for many communities, including Brick Township. Located on the Atlantic Coast, Brick Township suffered damage to approximately 10,000 of its 26,000 residences from the hurricane. Nearly 500 of these homes were destroyed or required demolition afterwards. Since then, the Township of Brick Archives has been using its digitized Construction and Land Use records to support the community’s recovery from this devastating storm. When the Township implemented document digitization in 2006, disaster recovery was not its intended purpose. However, having these digitized records readily available has proven to be …

The state of Alaska has no shortage of fascinating history and culture. What it does lack, however, is the presence of enough trained archivists to ensure the proper treatment and preservation of historic and cultural collections across the state’s numerous, albeit small, repositories. As such, the Alaska State Historic Records Advisory Board (ASHRAB) has developed the Journeyman Archival Processing Program, which provides an interested lone arranger the opportunity to work in an Alaska archives for six weeks. For decades now, archivists have been working to make archival spaces more approachable and accessible, especially through archival outreach endeavors. Utilizing food history as archival outreach is a growing trend among archival institutions, as evidenced by the increasing numbers of events, exhibits, and online resources being offered. Food history provides the opportunity to build archival outreach and engagement opportunities by utilizing materials often already in archival collections. In this unique project, college students in a first-year Three-Dimensional Concepts art course are partnered with a local youth writing project to create short films based on participants’ writings. This experience was born out of a campus Service-Learning Institute (SLI) to train faculty on best practices. The mutual goals included giving voice to area youth and connecting college students to the community. All participants explored and reflected on the importance of community engagement and citizenship by acknowledging their similarities and differences through creative lenses.

Participants from both groups generated ideas through shared journal exercises that the youth writers then used …

This thesis is a study of popular data resources in healthcare and their applications toward health information system design and development. The first section reviews the way data is collected with a list of websites where health datasets can be obtained; along with a summary of the recognized vocabulary standards that make it easier to understand and share this data. Information extraction (IE) is a fundamental component of natural language processing (NLP) that provides a deeper understanding of the texts. In the clinical domain, documents prepared by medical experts (e.g., discharge summaries, drug labels, medical history records) contain a significant amount of clinically-relevant information that is crucial to the overall well-being of patients. Unfortunately, in many cases, clinically-relevant information is presented in an unstructured format, predominantly consisting of free-texts, making it inaccessible to computerized methods. Automatic extraction of this information can improve accessibility. This column describes a process for integrating information literacy (IL) and evidence-based medicine (EBM) content within a new school of medicine curriculum. The project was a collaborative effort among health sciences librarians, curriculum deans, directors, and faculty. The health sciences librarians became members of the curriculum committees, developed a successful proposal for IL and EBM content within the curriculum, and were invited to become course instructors for Analytics in Medicine. As course instructors, the librarians worked with the other faculty instructors to design and deliver active learning class sessions based on a flipped classroom approach using a proprietary Information Mastery …

Library Instruction, Net Promoter Scores, And Nudging Beyond Satisfaction, Ted Chaffin

Washington University in Saint Louis Libraries are beginning to use the Net Promoter Score (NPS), in place of satisfaction surveys, to measure how library instruction sessions for the College Writing 1 program are received. NPS uses the 10-point Likert-scale question “Would you recommend this library instruction session to your friends and colleagues?” NPS determines whether library instruction participants and faculty are active “promoters,” simply satisfied “passives,” or dissatisfied “detractors.” Nudge theory is also introduced. “Nudge” is an attempt to unconsciously influence positive behaviors in place of using mandated activities. The author believes that NPS is inherently a “nudge.”

In the post-War on Poverty years, certain quarters of the U.S. library profession expressed a growing desire to enable librarians to beome more relevant and responsive to low-income, primarily African American, urban communities. This article traces how ideas and trends shifted within library discourse over roughly a decade starting in the mid-1960s, and offers an overview of the urban librarian training programs that emerged in the early 1970s. A recent study by Higgins and colleagues reports that the Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA) had the highest percentage of articles with both librarian and faculty co-authors out of 13 peer-reviewed journals in STEM librarianship and education between 2005 and 2014. A deeper and updated analysis of JMLA research articles and case studies published between 2008 and 2017 revealed that 29% of articles had both librarian and faculty co-authors. The main topics of librarian-faculty collaboration as described in these articles were related to patient and consumer health information and clinical information-seeking and decision-making by healthcare providers. …

This presentation was given at the 2018 Code4Lib Midwest conference. It told of an ongoing project at Wayne State to digitize and convert a book full of useful street data into a digital form. This book contained information on the re-mapping of Detroit streets in 1923, and the aim of this project was to build a widely accessible web platform with which to query this information.
