Interactive Whiteboards In Library Instruction: Facilitating Student Engagement And Active Learning, Maureen Richards, Marta Bladek, Karen Okamoto
Publications and Research
Determined to keep up with the ever-changing instructional trends, academic libraries have been quick to adopt emerging teaching and learning technologies. Recent literature features many examples of technologies that have found a place in libraries’ instructional programs: learning management systems, clickers, online tutorials, reference chats, and mobile devices, to mention the most popular ones. Curiously enough, despite their popularity in business and K-12 contexts, interactive whiteboards (IWBs) are rarely discussed in the context of academic libraries’ efforts to embrace innovative teaching methods. This article addresses this omission. Present-day IWBs have evolved to include features that accommodate a variety of teaching …

Artificial Intelligence(Ai) Application In Library Systems In Iran: A Taxonomy Study, Asefeh Asemi, Adeleh Asemi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
With introducing and developing AI logic, this science as a branch of computer science could impact and improve all sciences which used computer systems. LIS also could get benefit from AI in many areas. This paper survey applications of AI in library and information science and introduce the potential of library system to apply AI techniques. Intelligent systems have contributed for many librarian purposes like cataloging, indexing, information retrieval, reference, and other purposes. We applied Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) as a primer method for identification of the most applicable AI techniques categories in LIS. ESs are the most usable intelligent …
The Evolving Institutional Repository Landscape, Judy Luther
The Evolving Institutional Repository Landscape, Judy Luther
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Advances in technology affecting content creation and digital dissemination continue to reshape the role of academic libraries. The impact of these changes requires reimagining a strategy for the library built around digital collections–not only those acquired from publishers but the growing variety of files created in the development of scholarship and learning. Institutional Repositories (IRs) are emerging as a vehicle for new directions in how libraries can support the academic community both locally and globally.
To gain insights and gather data on IR operations, we conducted interviews, an open survey, and web research to obtain a snapshot of the current …

Good People, Bad Job Situations: A Middle Manager's Dilemma, Scott P. Muir, Jeanne R. Davidson
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
Middle managers play a critical role in successful library operations in both public and academic settings. Their alignment with and their ability to carry out the vision of upper management is critical to moving the organization forward at all levels. The authors offer practical strategies for any middle manager who finds herself in a position where she is not in accord with her boss, situations that can range from uncomfortable to disastrous. They examine a variety of issues and circumstances such as misunderstandings, unanticipated changes in the organization, lack of fit with the organizational culture, different work expectations, and incompatible …

The Anchor: 2018
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

“Let’S Try It!”: Library Outreach In A Culture Of Yes, Tammi Owens, Katie Bishop
Criss Library Faculty Publications
In the Research and Instruction Services department at the University of Nebraska at Omaha Libraries, a culture of yes drives our outreach efforts. This inclination to support non-traditional library services and events has allowed us to forge valued partnerships with student support services and learning communities, expanding the reach of the library into the university as a whole. In this column, we offer insight into how we have sustained a culture of yes as it relates to our student-focused outreach program. At the administrative level, defining the role of outreach for our organization and tying our outreach plan to the …

This report summarizes the development of a standardized scorecard for evaluating the openness of academic publishers. The assessment was completed in January 2018 as part of the Open Science and Research Initiative of the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.
The project complements the previous reports published by the Open Science and Research Initiative and the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, which have covered (i) the openness of universities and polytechnics, (ii) the overall situation of OA publishing costs in Finland, and (iii) research organization and research funding organizations, including selected European research funders.
The project mapped and evaluated …

Cummings, Merrill, And Borrelli’S Inquiry Into Small Screen Use By Academic Library Users: Timing Is Everything, Catharine Reese Bomhold
Faculty Publications
Objective – The authors undertook this study to understand the relatively new phenomenon of handheld computing and the use of small-screen devices among academic library users. They sought to determine if users would be inclined to search the online library catalogue on their devices and, by extension, if there would be a growing demand for small-screen compatible library services.
Design – Online and paper surveys were used with both closed and open questions. Respondents included students, faculty, and staff at Washington State University (WSU).
Setting – Washington State University Library, Pullman, Washington, United States of America. Subjects – The survey …

Expectations On Library Services, Library Quality (Libqual) Dimension And Library Customer Satisfaction: Relationship To Customer Loyalty, Arlyn Selga Cristobal
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study examined the library users’ minimum acceptable, desired, and actual observed service performance level of the University of Saint Louis (USL) College Library along the four service quality dimensions: access to information (AI), affect of service (AS), library as place (LP) and information control (IC). It also sought to determine the interrelationships of library service quality, satisfaction with library services, and loyalty to library and its services. This study utilized a questionnaire ased on (a) the LIbQUAL™ 2003 by the Academic and Research Libraries (ARL) and Texas A&M University Libraries; (b) satisfaction on library services; and (c) loyalty measures. …

Increasing Our Vision For 21st-Century Digital Libraries, Elizabeth M. Lorang, Leen-Kiat Soh
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations
This presentation
- Reads digital library interfaces—or their "main door" interfaces—as glimpses into what we have thus far valued in the development of digital libraries
- Frames a visual way of thinking about textual materials
- Introduces the work of our research team—where we are now, and where we're headed
- Draws some connections between the parts
This presentation is very much a look into thinking in process and work in progress and proposes the following ideas:
- As a community, we can do much more with the digital images we're creating of textual materials than we've heretofore done.
- We aspire to have additional layers …

Effective Archival Instruction When Embeddedness Won’T Work, Greg Johnson, Jennifer Ford
Effective Archival Instruction When Embeddedness Won’T Work, Greg Johnson, Jennifer Ford
The Primary Source
Over the past few years the standard “one shot” archives instruction session has been overshadowed in archival literature by a focus on the importance of embedded archivists, as well as emphasis on multiple guided instruction sessions for classes. These innovative techniques offer many advantages but this paper argues that the “one shot” model still holds relevance, especially for small institutions with limited staff sizes. Work on such sessions over the course of a decade have resulted in changes made to this model at the University of Mississippi, and this article discusses these changes and offers both lessons learned and examines …
