The Caine College of the Arts (CCA) Music Program Archives preserves artifacts of student, faculty, and guest artist musical contributions to scholarly and creative activity at Utah State University. This collection recognizes the value of campus musical history and community through collaboration between the Music Department, its liaison librarian, and the digital scholarship librarian.
Founded in 2008, DigitalCommons@USU is the University's institutional repository (IR). It is currently the 3rd largest Digital Commons instance in the nation, containing over 63,000 items.
CCA and the Music Department are extremely underrepresented in the IR. This project - started March 2017 - is …

Tools And Principles For Effective Online Library Instruction: Andragogy And Undergraduates, Kathy Watts
Tools And Principles For Effective Online Library Instruction: Andragogy And Undergraduates, Kathy Watts
Library Faculty Scholarship
The library literature evaluating the efficacy of online tutorial methods and delivery tools is a valuable resource for librarians looking for information to inform their choices for developing asynchronous online instruction. This literature, however, examines a wide variety of delivery tools, methods, and student populations. As a result, it is difficult to draw definitive conclusions about any one tutorial tool or method. This article compares selected research and concludes that the consensus in the literature suggests that applying adult learning principles to library tutorials has a larger impact on effective online instruction than the individual tool.

The University Archives and Special Collections department in the Joseph P. Healey Library at UMass Boston was awarded a Research Inventory Grant from Mass Humanities in June 2017. This allowed us the opportunity to devote a significant amount of time and resources to acquire, arrange, and describe the papers of noted Boston fiber artist, educator, and artist activist, Theresa-India Young. View the finding aid for the Theresa-India Young papers here. An exhibit showcasing materials from the collection is planned for June 2018 at the Grossmann Gallery in the Joseph P. Healey Library. My Year As A Visiting Scholar In The West Bank, Claudia J. Dold
My Year As A Visiting Scholar In The West Bank, Claudia J. Dold
Tampa Library Faculty and Staff Publications
For two semesters in the academic year 2017-2018 I have had the privilege of working in the West Bank/Palestine as a Fulbright Scholar, with financial support from the US government and my home university in Florida. I have worked as a librarian at two universities: one is a Palestinian state university and the other is a private Catholic university.
Methodology: The goal of my work was to promote research and critical thinking, as vehicles to encourage university students to become mature individuals and citizens. As education reaches across borders and around the world, I present some observations and examples from …

Vignettes: Implications For Lis Research, Allison Benedetti, John Jackson, Lili Luo
Faculty Publications
Vignettes, brief descriptions of fictional characters and situations, serve as a tool to study people’s lives, perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes about specific situations. Although not widely used in library and information science (LIS) research, vignettes can depersonalize responses to controversial situations or behavioral responses related to abstract concepts when employed in focus groups, in-depth interviews, or surveys. We use two research projects, one focused on the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and one on the vocabulary used to describe library services, to discuss the strengths of vignettes and implications for LIS research.

At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we've created a collection analysis system that is unique for at least two reasons: (1) we can combine a wider variety of data than we’ve seen elsewhere, (2) we can combine that data more quickly, more efficiently, than we’ve seen elsewhere. Because we can combine data efficiently, we have created reports approaching new kinds of problems. We can be more responsive as a library to the needs of our academic departments. We think our liaison support service is especially interesting and can provide other librarians with new ideas about how to garner support for the …

Organization Of Materials And Accessing The Library In Blackboard: A Learner-Centered Usability Study, Michelle Gibeault
Organization Of Materials And Accessing The Library In Blackboard: A Learner-Centered Usability Study, Michelle Gibeault
University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations
If we put the students in charge, how would they organize their course materials? What would their preferences reflect about approaches to organization? In order to engage with these research questions, a usability study aligned with social constructivist pedagogy and participatory design is described and evaluated as an avenue for investigation. The study entailed a classroom activity in which an adapted card-sort (using Legos) challenged students to organize their course materials, including librarian-created research materials, for their Composition II course's Blackboard site.

Reputational Threats Online: Social Media As A Simultaneous Agent Of Crisis And Tool For Response And Resolution In The Case Study Of An American Academic Library, Margaret C. Stewart, Maria Atilano
Library Faculty Presentations & Publications
This paper details a reputational threat to an American academic library where a viral social media post and associated negative comments misrepresented the institution and brand’s values. Immediately, the marketing librarian responsible for social media responded to the threat by engaging directly with the library consumers, sharing content and information with the broader online community, and reinforcing the library’s values and commitment to consumers. While the resolution to the crisis was mostly favourable, the event was unanticipated and invited a keen learning opportunity that is documented in this case study. Reflections and takeaways from this incident are discussed in the …

Academic Libraries On Social Media: Finding The Students And The Information They Want, Heather A. Howard, Sarah E. Huber, Elizabeth A. Moore, Lisa Carter
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Librarians from Purdue University wanted to determine which social media platforms students use, which platforms they would like the library to use, and what content they would like to see from the library on each of these platforms. We conducted a survey at four of the nine campus libraries to determine student social media habits and preferences. Results show that students currently use Facebook, YouTube, and Snapchat more than other social media types; however, students responded that they would like to see the library on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Students wanted nearly all types of content from the libraries on …

The Public Knowledge Project (PKP) is entering its third decade. Like any project that has been around this long, PKP is facing the substantial responsibilities of maturity, seeking ways that will enable it to best serve the thousands of people who utilize our software to operate and index the journals and presses with which they work. It is out of this sense of responsibility that PKP, in the fall of 2017, submitted a proposal to the Laura and John Arnold Foundation boldly entitled “Sustaining Open Access’ Most Widely Used Publishing Software.” With this planning grant, PKP contracted the consulting services …

Library Publishing Curriculum Content Module: Readme (Overview), Peter Berkery, Meredith Babb, Jasmine Mulliken, Friederike Sundaram, Dennis Lloyd, Mary Rose Muccie, Brenna Mclaughlin
Library Publishing Curriculum
The Content Module contains six units: 1) Editorial Strategies, 2) Nuts and Bolts, 3) Publishing Long-Form Scholarship, 4) Supporting a Journals Program, 5) Developing Materials for Coursework, and 6) Working with Multi-Modal Content. Within each unit, you will find the following files: a bibliography, an instructor’s guide, a narrative, a slide deck, and supplementary activities and exercises. Start with the instructor’s guide to gain a “big-picture” sense of the topics covered, then read the narrative for an overview of the content covered in the unit. The files provide everything an instructor needs to teach the unit. These units can each …
