Exploring The American Archivist: Corpus Analysis Tools And The Professional Literature, J. Gordon Daines Iii, Cory L. Nimer, Jacob R. Lee

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The literature of a professional community provides insights into what members of that community value and underscores key professional issues. Periodic analyses of professional literature are an important way for these communities to identify trends that deserve further exploration. This article introduces the use of corpus analysis tools such as Voyant Tools and discusses their value in performing periodic analyses of professional literature. As an example, it presents a limited study examining the use of the term “theory” in the American Archivist.

Pointing A Telescope Toward The Night Sky: Transparency And Intentionality As Teaching Techniques, Beth Fuchs

Library Presentations

How often do you provide your students with a telescope to better view your instructional intentions? Recent research from The Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Project at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has shown that students benefit when teachers articulate the thought processes behind their instructional decisions and goals. How can transparent teaching practices enhance the professional practice of instruction librarians, even when leading a one-shot session? This workshop will explore the research behind transparent teaching, consider the assumptions that underlie it, and provide practical ways to implement it.

Participants will:

Interinstitutional Student Success, Chelsea Heinbach, Brittany P. Fiedler, Rosan Mitola

Library Faculty Presentations

Transfer students make up 37.2% of college students in the United States (NSCRC 2015), but often aren’t considered in our design of instruction and outreach programs. They quickly blend in with the rest of the campus upon arrival, potentially causing libraries to fail in serving them appropriately. What services and resources do transfer students need? What knowledge and experiences are they bringing to the university? How can libraries collaborate with on- and off-campus partners?

In Fall 2017 and Spring 2018, we surveyed and interviewed transfer students at various points in their academic career. We focused on gaining an understanding of …

Learning Commons Passport Presentation, Karen Caputo, Alyssa Darden

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

How do you meet your distance students where they are for instruction? With attention spans set by social media behavior, how do you ensure your instruction message gets across? We created a tutorial library – the Learning Commons Passport – with short, navigable and succinct instruction videos that are accessible to learners across the globe and that instructors can embed in their courses. We worked with our IT and interactive media teams to create the structure and templates, but maintained ownership over the site and videos so we could quickly create needed tutorials, push edits, and provide the most up-to-date …

Tools For Troubleshooting: Which Ones And What For, Robert Heaton

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

A small group of midsize land-grant institutions in the western United States responded to a survey on what tools they used for troubleshooting, what activities they accomplished using the tools, and who performed their troubleshooting. Most respondents use subscription-manager administration tools, email programs, electronic resource management systems, and ticket trackers, but many other software programs are each used at a small number of institutions. Most tools support multiple troubleshooting activities, and most troubleshooting activities are supported by multiple tools. Most libraries have slightly more paraprofessionals than faculty with some troubleshooting responsibility, but nearly all have at least one of each.

A Pop-Up Service Point And Repurposed Study Spaces: Maintaining Market Share During A Renovation, Marc Vinyard, Mark Roosa, Sally Bryant, Melinda Raine

Pepperdine University Libraries

Payson Library, the largest library at Pepperdine, primarily serves undergraduate students. It underwent a renovation between spring 2016 and fall 2017. Payson Library was closed during this renovation, and a Library Hub was established as a temporary service point and library information and teaching center on campus. Maintaining market share led to rolling out new services such as RAPID-ILL, repurposing a graduate campus library for increased study spaces, and reliance on a strong library liaison program. Predictably, there was a sharp reduction in patron visits, but there was success in providing reference, instruction, and access to the collections.

How Undergraduate Students' Perceptions Of Academic Librarians Can Inform Innovative Teaching, Jody C. Fagan, Hillary Ostermiller, Elizabeth Price, Lara Sapp

Libraries

Student perceptions of teachers can influence the success of instruction, and library instruction is no exception. Understanding the mindset of students can help academic librarians prepare for in-person and asynchronous classes and create instructional materials. By anticipating students’ impressions, librarians can challenge false assumptions and improve interactions. This poster highlights findings from a large study of how undergraduate students at one institution perceive academic librarians.

Space Invaders: Programmatic And Individual Il Efforts Within A Core Curriculum, Sally Neal, Amanda Starkel

Scholarship and Professional Work

Butler University librarians are “invading” their University’s core curriculum with information literacy integrated on multiple fronts, both at the administrative programmatic level and via a ‘grass-roots,’ one-class-at-a time approach. Butler University upholds an extensive core curriculum required of all of its students consisting of a first-year seminar, a sophomore global historical studies course, and six content areas. Librarians have been engaged with the University’s first year seminar for a number of years and have been looking at how to expand our reach into other areas of the core. While not abandoning an intentional programmatic approach, we are finding a “space …
