Engineering higher education increasingly produces data in the volume, variety, velocity, and need for veracity such that the output of the research is considered “Big Data”. While engineering faculty members do conceive of and direct the research producing this data, there may be gaps in faculty members’ knowledge in training graduate and undergraduate research assistants in the management of Big Data. The project described herein details the development of a Big Data education module for a group of graduate researchers and undergraduate research assistants in Electrical and Computer Engineering. This project has the following objectives: to document and describe current …

A Brief Introduction, Kayla Morrow Aug 2017

A Brief Introduction, Kayla Morrow

Blogging the Library

I’m a 2017 graduate of a small liberal-arts college named Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. I double majored in English and Philosophy and was fortunate to have two archival internships at the Mount during my senior year. I had never considered a career in archival science before this point—in fact, I don’t think I knew what archival science even was—but I fell in love with my work at the Mount’s library. Nearing graduation, I decided that I wanted to pursue either a general MLIS or a library science degree with a specialization. But, as I soon realized, picking …

You Have One Hour: Developing A Standardized Library Orientation And Evaluating Student Learning, Elizabeth Brown Aug 2017

You Have One Hour: Developing A Standardized Library Orientation And Evaluating Student Learning, Elizabeth Brown

Library Scholarship

Library orientations continue to excite, or plague, instruction librarians everywhere. Reaching first year students early can preempt academic heartache and research woes, yet the question of “what students really need” continues to evolve. This article presents a case study of a large-scale implementation of library orientations. The main issue addressed in this article involves a systematic review of students’ post-instruction responses and assessment of their learning. Related elements mentioned in this article include: interdepartmental participation; curriculum design; and instructional technology. While this implementation may not be appropriate for all academic libraries, its components may offer ideas for augmenting existing programs …

Dropped In Without A Parachute: Library Managers’ Supervision Experiences, Simon Funge, Audrey Robinson-Nkongola, Laura Delancey, Austin G. Griffiths

Social Work Faculty Publications

A survey of U.S. library managers explored the relationship between their social identities, experiences supervising others, support from others, and their overall satisfaction in their professional role. The literature provides evidence that demographic differences give rise to challenges in the workplace. Though no statistically significant differences were found between minority and nonminority managers related to supervisees' microaggressive behaviors, written commentary provided evidence of these and other supervision challenges. A regression analysis found that supervisees' behaviors, along with a manager's age, were significant predictors of their satisfaction as a supervisor. Recommendations for further research and implications for libraries emerge from these …

Metadata And Copyright: Should Institutions License Their Data About Scholarship?, Krista L. Cox Aug 2017

Metadata And Copyright: Should Institutions License Their Data About Scholarship?, Krista L. Cox

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Institutions have a number of options for how to treat metadata while encouraging widespread use and sharing. Some institutions may determine that no license is necessary to openly share metadata, taking the position that the metadata they produce is not copyrightable. Others might share it using a CC0 license or CC0 with additional guidelines. In determining how to share metadata, institutions should consider possible cross-border implications as well as the potential that what is defined as metadata could grow in breadth and raise additional copyright concerns. Additionally, institutions should take into account the benefit that clear and easy-to-understand policies provide …
