Purpose – This work aims to provide a report on adopting a consortial model ofcollaboration toward understanding digital preservation practice.

Design/methodology/approach – This work provides a case study detailing the work and outcomes of a digital preservation pilot project undertaken by the Five College Libraries between 2014 and 2015.

Findings – Digital preservation is a broad endeavor and rapidly developing facet of digital collections and institutional repositories; yet, it is often an area that is not fully understood or implemented by many libraries and archives, largely because institutions lack the necessary resources to do it alone. As the international student population continues to grow, librarians must adjust their instruction to meet the needs of students who are adapting to a new country, culture, and language. This study assesses first-year international students as they engage in the research process through the completion of concept maps that precede database searches. Librarians assessed concept maps of international students completed prior to information literacy instruction to better understand the difficulties they experienced defining research topics and identifying keywords and alternatives. The results of this assessment provide a deeper understanding of the challenges first-year international students face with creating search strategies. …

To achieve higher science literacy, both students and the public require discipline-specific information literacy in the sciences. Scientific information literacy is a core component of the scientific process. In addition to teaching how to find and evaluate resources, scientific information literacy should include teaching the process of scholarship as a conversation and publication in the sciences. Faculty and librarians can be challenged in their efforts to teach students because of limited access to published research. Stronger scientific information literacy and more access to scholarly research could improve science literacy as a whole.

Faculty Visions For Teaching Web Accessibility Within Lis Curricula In The United States: A Qualitative Study, Adina Mulliken, Mireille Djenno

This qualitative study explores the understanding and perspectives of faculty in US library and information science (LIS) programs about teaching web accessibility. “Web accessibility” can be defined simply as making websites accessible for all, including people with disabilities. Eight LIS professors and two graduate LIS students or recent alumni with interests in accessibility were interviewed for the study. Results showed that, although some faculty were novices, most interviewees thought it would be beneficial to teach web accessibility in a variety of LIS courses. However, despite the seeming consensus, discussion of incorporating web accessibility into curricula was rare. This study explores …

Teaching Systematic Searching Methods To Public Health Graduate Students: Repeated Library Instruction Sessions Correlate With Better Assignment Scores, John Pell

Objective – The objective of this study was to devise an assessment plan to determine if repeat attendance at two library instruction sessions is statistically associated with overall assignment scores or specific assignment qualities.

Methods – The author used SPSS to calculate correlations between attendance and assignment scores and cross tabulations between attendance and assignment item analysis scores.

Results – Repeat attendance at two library instruction sessions was statistically associated with higher overall assignment scores and higher scores on specific assignment sections. The effect is statistically significant.

The purpose of this descriptive study was to analyze and describe the collaborative relationships of teacher librarians and public librarians in one Iowa county. The research focused on how collaborative relationships are established between public and school libraries, what type of collaborations exist, what resources are shared, and what barriers to successful collaboration exist. This was a qualitative study using semistructured interviews with three public youth services librarians in two public libraries and two teacher librarians in two different districts in the same county. The Aboriginal and Torres Islander Protocols for Libraries, Archives, and Information Sources, the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials, and other directives provide invaluable direction for professionals concerned with ethical stewardship of collections with Indigenous content, however, a fundamental challenge remains: how do we establish sufficient understanding of Indigenous content in our collections to initiate the dialogue of shared stewardship? We describe a survey of a university manuscript collection for Indigenous content and its unanticipated challeges and changes to our understanding of the collection. This article describes for the first time the composition and structure of the personal networks of novice librarian researchers. We used social network analysis to observe if participating in the Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL) affected the development of the librarians’ personal networks and how the networks changed over the course of one year. Four times during the year, we used EgoWeb 2.0, open-source software for social network analysis, to gather the data used in the study. Special libraries often provide career searching support to their users. Career research has changed significantly over the past decade, as have the resources available to librarians and their patrons. Librarians at Purdue University’s Roland G. Parrish Library of Management and Economics have formed partnerships with other organizations across campus in order to share the cost of specialized career resources, streamline instruction, and best serve students. This article discusses how these cooperative relationships were formed, and also recommends specific specialized career resources that libraries providing career research assistance may want to consider.

This article explores how librarian participation as instructors in week-long intensive classes—a common workshop format in Digital Humanities (DH)—can advance a variety of library objectives, while also uniquely supporting the DH community. Intensive workshops fall between the one-shot session and credit course formats more commonly found in library instruction. How might engineering technology students make use of patent information in the engineering design process? Librarians analyzed team project reports and personal reflections created by students in an undergraduate mechanical engineering technology design course, revealing that the students used patents to consider the patentability of their ideas, to explore the state of the art in given areas of technology, and to inspire creative problem solving. These results have implications for future patent-related instruction and for conducting information literacy outreach to engineering and engineering technology departments.

This study examines the effects of information literacy (IL) on student learning and motivation in university courses. We investigated student course-level learning gains and student perceptions of their learning environments by examining data from over 3,000 students in 102 course sections across seven colleges. Results provide evidence of the following: 1) students who synthesize information and communicate the results tend to perceive higher levels of motivation than students who do so less often; 2) there is a significant positive relationship between synthesizing information and communicating the results and course level learning gains. A Contemporary Citation Analysis Of Geography Education Journals: 2009–2015, Thom Gerrish, Donald Patrick Albert

This study examined the flow of citations from 713 documents emanating from ten geography education journals from 2009 to 2011. The citations generated from these articles were tracked within and between this set of journals from 2009 through 2015. Our searches found 1,067 citations, or an average of 1.5 citations per article. After excluding self-citations, the remaining citations (33.6 percent) filtered out into other geography education journals and were classified into three groups: splash, wave, and ripple. Although the Journal of Geography in Higher Education generated the largest in-degree count, it shared the lead with the International Research in Geographical …

Frequently we, scholarly communications librarians, talk about the labor that goes into copyright clearance. We spend hours browsing Sherpa/Romeo, but when we get to archiving pre-print or post-print restrictions our labor stops; because faculty do not self-archive their publication. At Loyola Marymount University, we have integrated Unpaywall and OA Button into our ingestion workflow to find pre-prints or post-prints. This snapshot will explore the analysis and findings of our use of these two free Google Chrome apps to expand Digital Commons @ LMU.

Operating from three distinct but interlocking perspectives as a Black woman archivist, a White woman anti-racist public librarian, and a Black woman academic librarian, we will facilitate a discussion about our experiences navigating collection development and collection development policies. Together we will acknowledge and address the disparities of race in collection development practices and discuss practical strategies for developing an anti-racist agenda at our institutions. We will also discuss how anti-racist accomplices can both support and follow the lead of Black women librarians and archivists as well as strategies for developing anti-racist collection development practices.
