Altmetrics And Archives, Elizabeth Joan Kelly

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Altmetrics are an alternative to traditional measurement of the impact of published resources. While altmetrics are primarily used by researchers and institutions to measure the impact of scholarly publications online, they can also be used by archives to measure the impact of their diverse online holdings, including digitized and born-digital collections, digital exhibits, repository websites, and online finding aids. Furthermore, altmetrics may fill a need for user engagement assessments for cultural heritage organizations. This article introduces the concept of altmetrics for archives and discusses barriers to adoption, best practices for collection, and potential further areas of study.

In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Electronic databases such as LexisNexis or Westlaw may only be accessible for those who can afford it. Even with access to these databases, those without legal training may find them to be overwhelming. This chapter aims to shed some light on the process of doing federal legal research as well as recommend Internet sites where the layperson can get access to free legal resources.

Library Presentations

Part of a three-paper panel session entitled "Visual Literacy for All! - Instruction in the Self-directed Digital Era" sponsored by Louisiana State University: Easy access to images on the internet means students are using finding and making use of them more than ever, which begs the following questions: Do they fully understand what and why they’re using these images? Are they finding the images they want? Do students care about visual literacy when so much is instantly available to find, copy and paste? In this panel of librarians and LIS faculty, research into the use of images, visual literacy pedagogy …

A Small Introduction, Abigail K. Major Feb 2017

A Small Introduction, Abigail K. Major

Blogging the Library

I’ve always have had a special place in my heart for libraries. During my childhood, I spent a lot of time in the school’s library as well as my community’s. I spent so many of my lunch periods in the elementary school’s library that I became a ‘regular.’ I was eventually asked by the librarian to become a library aide, and assisted in checking in and out books, and shelving. I also was captain of the Battle of the Books team in fifth and sixth grade! Looking back at it now, those wonderful experiences instilled in me a love for …

All In For Privacy: Cultivating A Community Of Information Privacy Awareness, Lindsay Taylor, Marni R. Harrington, Matt Ward

FIMS Presentations

The Library Freedom Project supports librarianship’s values of freedom of information and privacy by providing relevant tools and education to LIS professionals. A group from the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at Western aligned with the project to encourage student participation in local and global privacy issues. Our programming encourages hands-on use of open source and anti-surveillance software, such as Tor Browser for anonymous web browsing. In addition, we detail how we configured our Tor relay to route anonymous encrypted global traffic, so that other libraries can join the 280 relays currently running in Canada and 7000 worldwide.

Legal And Ethical Issues Around Incorporating Traditional Knowledge In Polar Data Infrastructures, Teresa Scassa, Fraser Taylor Feb 2017

Legal And Ethical Issues Around Incorporating Traditional Knowledge In Polar Data Infrastructures, Teresa Scassa, Fraser Taylor

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Human knowledge of the polar region is a unique blend of Western scientific knowledge and local and indigenous knowledge. It is increasingly recognized that to exclude Traditional Knowledge from repositories of polar data would both limit the value of such repositories and perpetuate colonial legacies of exclusion and exploitation. However, the inclusion of Traditional Knowledge within repositories that are conceived and designed for Western scientific knowledge raises its own unique challenges. There is increasing acceptance of the need to make these two knowledge systems interoperable but in addition to the technical challenge there are legal and ethical issues involved. These …

Censorship: Filtering Content On The Web, Lizabeth Elaine Stem

The Southeastern Librarian

The World Wide Web has become a vehicle of free expression for millions of people around the world. It also represents a type of international library with no geographical or physical boundaries, bringing a vast array of information into private homes, schools and businesses. Because the Web allows anyone to post anything at any time, many believe some sort of censorship should be imposed. Censorship of the Web comes in the form of software which filters Web sites, blocking those which publish content deemed unsuitable by those administering the filtering software. Most content filtering software is used on computers in …
