Open Access And The Humanities: The Case Of Classics Journals, Paul Ojennus Apr 2017

Open Access And The Humanities: The Case Of Classics Journals, Paul Ojennus

Library Faculty Scholarship

Since the earliest pressures to develop open access (OA) options for journal literature were in the fields of science and medicine, the predominant models reflect those origins and fit those disciplines. These models are less applicable to humanities publishing models, which have been slower to embrace open access. Current literature on OA in the humanities focuses on theoretical frameworks and end-user perceptions. This study complements those perspectives by examining current practices in the humanities, specifically, the OA options offered by journals serving the discipline of the classics.

Journal Evaluation Tool, Shilpa Rele, Marie Kennedy, Nataly Blas

Librarian Publications & Presentations

The changing mechanisms of scholarly publishing may make it difficult for you to determine where to publish the results of your research or creative works. In order to assist you in making the best decisions for your work, and to avoid journals that may not be credible, the William H. Hannon Library has developed a rubric for the evaluation of journals. Our focus during the development of this tool was specifically to address the concerns of our Loyola Marymount University faculty about Open Access journals, but this rubric may be applied more broadly to any kind of journal.

Lending Video Game Consoles In An Academic Library, Ryan F. Buller Apr 2017

Lending Video Game Consoles In An Academic Library, Ryan F. Buller

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

This paper will outline the process and discussions undertaken at the University of Denver’s University Libraries to implement a lending service providing video game consoles. Faculty and staff at the University Libraries decided to pursue the new lending service, though not a traditional library offering, to support the needs of a video game design curriculum in the Emergent Digital Practices program. By rethinking the role and scope of the library collection, the library met the demonstrated needs of an emerging program and reinforced its usefulness to the campus community.

A Hook And A Book: Rewards As Motivators In Public Library Summer Reading Programs (In Children And Libraries), Ruth V. Small, Marilyn P. Arnone, Erin Bennett

iSchool - All Scholarship

This peer-reviewed paper  appeared in Children and Libraries and explored the effects of extrinsic rewards on young participants (entering sixth through ninth grade) in public library summer reading programs in two library systems in different states. Twenty-two of sixty total participants volunteered to be interviewed, and twenty-four parents of those sixty participants volunteered to participate in an online survey. Additionally, 292 public librarians who directed summer reading programs in urban, suburban, and rural libraries nationwide volunteered to take part in an online survey that sought their perspectives on how incentives were used in their summer reading programs. Results and recommendations …
