Privacy And Anonymity In A Reference Librarianship Digital Archive, Emily K. Chan May 2017

Privacy And Anonymity In A Reference Librarianship Digital Archive, Emily K. Chan

Digital Initiatives Symposium

This poster will discuss the ethical concerns with the processing, digitizing, and organizing of the Pacific Library Partnership’s System Reference Center (SRC) reference question archive, which contains material artifacts of complex reference questions from 1972-2004.

Reference services, a core librarian responsibility, centers on connecting users with answers, materials, and the information that will satisfy their research needs. With the proliferation of online materials and ubiquity of search engines, the nature of reference services has changed dramatically over the last decades.

The archive is comprised of questions submitted for reference librarian review by other reference librarians who had exhausted local resources …

Scholarly Publishing Education For Academic Authors: Reframing The Library’S Instruction Role, Charlotte Roh, Gail P. Clement May 2017

Scholarly Publishing Education For Academic Authors: Reframing The Library’S Instruction Role, Charlotte Roh, Gail P. Clement

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Scholarly publishing has made great strides in fulfilling the vision of open access, with more journals and papers now freely available to read and reference on the Internet. Yet that achievement falls short of a truly global open, trusted, and reuseable scholarly record. What are the next steps in openness and the pain points in providing completely open scholarship? Education about the publishing process is still developing, particularly when the publishing infrastructure includes the same colonial systems and biases in academic research and publishing that persist throughout academia. These biases influence what gets published, who gets tenure, what research gets …

How Libraries Are Meeting Researcher Needs In The Digital Humanities, Kelley F. Rowan

Digital Initiatives Symposium

This presentation will provide guidance for those considering the creation of a digital humanities (DH) lab, as well as for those with a current functional DH lab. The Digital Scholars Studio at Florida International University (FIU) was created in 2016 with the purpose of providing needed technology and collaborative space for researchers and students. We will explore the challenges experienced by restricted space and budget and discuss how we resolved these specific limitations before continuing with an in-depth look at programming and usage of DH software and tools. We will take a look at a few current projects our researchers …

Collection & Community Building Through Web Archiving: Engaging With Faculty And Students In A Collaborative Web Archiving Project, Andrea Schuler

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Tisch Library at Tufts University has recently begun a pilot web archiving project, aiming to deepen Tufts’ collections in areas of strategic importance and support more “traditional” library collection development activities, while collecting material that is not known to be comprehensively collected by other institutions. Additionally, the project offers an opportunity for collaborative collection building with faculty and students that serves as a unique way to deepen our community‘s engagement with the library.

The initial pilot collection focuses on environmental justice, selected due to its relevance to the Tufts community and curriculum and to build on existing Tisch Library collection …

The Undergraduate As Public Scholar: Digital Scholarship And Information Literacy, Allegra Swift, Jessica Davila Greene, Dani Cook

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Libraries are at the nexus of an expanded definition of scholarship that changes how we teach information literacy to undergraduates who are not only information seekers, but also creators of new knowledge. Their academic works have been shared farther and are accessed more often than traditionally published forms of scholarship. While the definition of a “scholarly work” is still understood by most in the academy as a peer-reviewed journal article or monograph published by a prestigious academic publisher, this narrow construct is being challenged by undergraduate scholarship that is accessed, cited, and engaged in a global scholarly conversation. This crucial …

Opening Keynote: Fulfilling Our Mission In The Digital Age, Joan K. Lippincott May 2017

Opening Keynote: Fulfilling Our Mission In The Digital Age, Joan K. Lippincott

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Academic libraries have always supported the institutional missions of teaching, research, and service or community. There are many opportunities to enhance that support in the digital environment. Digital tools are fundamental to many research activities and many students would like to use digital technologies in meaningful ways in their education. In supporting digital scholarship, libraries can promote partnerships with faculty in research and teaching. Faculty engaging in digital research frequently involve their students, often including some on their research team and then either developing some of their digital content as part of class work or using the products of their …

Self-Published Books: Should Libraries Buy Or Not?, Jennifer Culley May 2017

Self-Published Books: Should Libraries Buy Or Not?, Jennifer Culley

The Southeastern Librarian

Self-publishing has been around as long as books have existed. Before there were big publishing houses there were authors publishing their own works. Although there is now an abundance of publishers, a large number of self-published books are still being produced each year. There are currently publishers that only assist authors with self-publishing and the numbers are growing with the increase in formats of works, such as print books, e-books, audio books, zines (self-published magazines), etc. Self-published works can also be print-on-demand titles, and are sometimes referred to as vanity publications. There is some belief out there that self-published materials …

How Automated Workflows Helped Us Ingest 600 Faculty Publications In Three Months In Lmu’S Institutional Repository!, Shilpa Rele, Jessea Young

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Conducting copyright clearance and ingesting appropriate versions of faculty publications can be a labor intensive and time consuming process. At Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a medium-size, private institution, the Digital Library Program (DLP) had been conducting copyright clearance one publication at a time. This meant that it took an enormous amount of time from start to finish to review and process the list of publications on a given faculty member’s CV. In October 2016, the Digital Program Librarian learned about the automated workflow developed by librarians at University of North Texas and decided to give it a try. At this …

Where Students Start And What They Do When They Get Stuck: A Qualitative Inquiry Into Academic Information-Seeking And Help-Seeking Practices, Eamon Tewell, Susan E. Thomas, Gloria Willson

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

This study investigates two questions key to academic library resources and services: Which sources are students most likely to use to begin their academic work? Whom do students tend to consult for research assistance? In-depth interviews conducted with 15 undergraduate and graduate students were thematically analyzed through a three-step process. The findings indicate that students are most likely to consult faculty and peers for assistance and are largely unaware of librarians' roles, while they tend to begin research using library databases and do not necessarily start with Google. In addition, student use of small study groups as learning networks and …

"I Go To School, But I Never Learn What I Want To Know": Archival Advocacy And Outreach As Expressed In Educational Settings, Jeremy Brett, Jasmine Jones, Leah Edelman May 2017

"I Go To School, But I Never Learn What I Want To Know": Archival Advocacy And Outreach As Expressed In Educational Settings, Jeremy Brett, Jasmine Jones, Leah Edelman

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

As part of an ongoing study designed to foster a dialogue among archivists about how the profession regards the concepts of advocacy and outreach, the authors conducted a survey (distributed to SAA members from January-March 2015) focused on these concepts as they are expressed or taught in educational settings. Survey findings include a gap between what people want to know and what graduate programs and professional organizations teach. The authors of the survey propose that, given that archivists desire and welcome more information relating to advocacy and outreach, graduate institutions develop curricula that includes more robust and comprehensive attention paid …

The twenty-first-century student frequently engages with mobile environments to fulfill his or her information needs. Reports from the Pew Research Center (Duggan, 2015) indicate an increasing trend in the use of mobile social media platforms in the US adult population. According to the report, Social Media Usage: 2005–2015 (2015), 65 percent of American adults use social networking sites, and young adults (ages 18–29) reported the highest social media usage for all age groups, at 90 percent. Among the young adult age group, social media usage in 2005 was reported to be 12 percent (Perrin, 2015). This sharp 650 percent rise …

A Shared Space: The Collaborative Alliance Between The College Of Charleston Special Collections And The South Carolina Historical Society Archives, Mary Jo Fairchild, Molly Inabinett, Joshua Minor

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

In December 2014, the South Carolina Historical Society relocated nearly 5,000 linear feet of manuscript material and more than 3,000 rare books and monographs to a shared space within the Special Collections department at the College of Charleston’s Addlestone Library. Exploration of the antecedents and evolution of this partnership between a private non-profit manuscript archive and a public academic repository can demonstrate lessons learned from the process of condensing archival spaces and personnel to create a deeply rich repository for research and inquiry. In the absence of a formula or analytical framework for the envisioned collaboration, stakeholders at each institution …
