Just Like Starting Over: Using Alma And Primo To Create A Successful Course Reserves Service, Molly Gunderson May 2017

Just Like Starting Over: Using Alma And Primo To Create A Successful Course Reserves Service, Molly Gunderson

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

The Portland State University Library has a heavily-used course reserve service, for both print and electronic materials. When we migrated to ExLibris in 2014, we decided to move from Docutek ERes to Alma. We took the opportunity to rethink our course reserve service and changed everything from loan periods to work flows. We also harnessed Primo to make our course reserve materials more discoverable and incorporated course reserves materials in the course shells of our learning management system, Desire2Learn (D2L).

In this presentation I will offer best practices and discuss the challenges we faced in moving to a new platform …

Faculty Response To Deselection In Academic Libraries: A Psycholinguistic Analysis, Ann Agee May 2017

Faculty Response To Deselection In Academic Libraries: A Psycholinguistic Analysis, Ann Agee

Faculty and Staff Publications

Deselection is a necessary but politically sensitive part of an academic librarian's responsibilities. To provide an overview of the emotional dynamics involved in weeding an academic collection, this article analyzes editorials, articles, and book chapters chronicling faculty response to weeding from a psycholinguistic viewpoint. Using computer-based text analysis, these accounts are examined for the amount and type of emotional content they contain. These findings provide a template for what librarians can expect when beginning a deselection process and point to best practices for working effectively with faculty to create a robust and healthy collection.

Leveraging The Strengths Of Your Campus Bookstore, James Howard May 2017

Leveraging The Strengths Of Your Campus Bookstore, James Howard

Open Educational Resources Symposium

The HEOA of 2008 mandates that Universities list all course materials being assigned in a course prior to

registration. In a lot of cases the campus bookstore fulfills the University’s requirement for this provision. The Oregon HB 2871 also directs that OER material adopted for course be sent to the campus bookstore for student information and distribution purposes. Beyond just alerting students of OER adoptions for a course the campus bookstore can be an effective instrument in distributing OER material. Yes, your campus bookstore can distribute "FREE" material. The campus bookstore is often the information hub for all things course …

Pdxopen: Psu's Open Textbook Initiative, Karen Bjork May 2017

Pdxopen: Psu's Open Textbook Initiative, Karen Bjork

Open Educational Resources Symposium

Open access textbook publishing initiatives not only provide libraries the opportunity to recast their longstanding mission to facilitate research and remove barriers to information they also impact student affordability efforts. How can a library build a program that will meet the needs of students, faculty, and administrators? The answer lies in collaboration and sharing.

In 2013, with the support of a Provost-backed initiative, Portland State University (PSU) Library developed an open textbook publishing program that works with faculty to create open textbooks specifically designed for a course. The publishing initiative, PDXOpen, has published 10 open textbooks with an additional 7 …

Statistics: The Text For Student Success, Larry Shrewsbury May 2017

Statistics: The Text For Student Success, Larry Shrewsbury

Open Educational Resources Symposium

My session is for those looking for an open source textbook for Statistics (MTH 243). As a grant recipient the faculty from both Southern Oregon University and Rogue Community College looked at several open source textbooks for our MTH 243 classes. We first looked at the very popular OpenStax Statistics, but the consensus was that it wasn’t as good as the textbook we’ve been using (Michael Sullivan’s Statistics, Informed Decisions using Data, 4th Edition). So we agreed to keep looking at more open source Statistics textbooks. We came across one that doesn’t seem to be very well known, but some …

The Oer As Open Creative Act, Jenn Kepka May 2017

The Oer As Open Creative Act, Jenn Kepka

Open Educational Resources Symposium

This session will discuss ways that OER texts can be opened for student and colleague input, both as a way to encourage open pedagogy and as a way to increase the work's sustainability. The example used will be the 2017-2017 writing texts created for WR121 and WR122. We will also discuss the constructivist and connectivist value of creating educational resources that are adaptable by students and faculty. Attendees will be invited to brainstorm and then workshop their own materials during the session so that they leave with an action list of next steps to take in opening their own class …

Human A&P: Collaborative Oer Adoption, Lindsay Biga May 2017

Human A&P: Collaborative Oer Adoption, Lindsay Biga

Open Educational Resources Symposium

Despite the availability of open source textbooks, few faculty have adopted OERs as primary course resources for several reasons. Faculty are dubious as to whether OERs are sufficiently rigorous academically and as extensively reviewed as traditional textbooks distributed by major publishers. Additionally, faculty note that many scientific disciplines rely heavily on high quality, scientifically accurate figures, an area in which OERs pale in comparison to traditional textbooks. Further, OER ancillary materials are often inferior when available at all. But perhaps most importantly, faculty have not adopted OERs because they are basically satisfied with their current textbooks and lack the time …

I will share my experience writing and e-publishing my open textbook and using it in the classroom. It is the first Arabic textbook in the Open Textbook library at the University of Minnesota and Portland State University’s library website. The book has been downloaded over 300 times all over the world in a year and counting. In addition to the e-book, I will discuss my experience with mediaspace.pdx.edu in class teaching and the students’ reactions to incorporating it in teaching Arabic.

Converting Calculus Oer Into A Multimedia Text, Alex Jordan, Carly Vollet May 2017

Converting Calculus Oer Into A Multimedia Text, Alex Jordan, Carly Vollet

Open Educational Resources Symposium

We have used MathBook XML software to convert two popular OERs for calculus into a multimedia format that

integrates online homework support. We'll demonstrate various features of the output, and the methods we use to edit these OERs. As time permits, we'll peek at some other OER projects that are using MathBook XML.

Our goal is to promote these two particular OERs and also the use of MathBook XML, which, in spite of its name, is an excellent tool for writing OER in all subjects. Potential attendees who are not particularly interested in mathematics may still be interested in the …

Open Educational Resources Symposium

Carol Burnell, Nicole Rosevear, Susan Pesznecker, and Monique Babin of Clackamas Community College (CCC), along with Jaime Wood of Portland State University, are currently developing an OER for CCC's developmental reading and writing courses, WRD-090 and -098. This project grew from a desire to create a resource that would evolve and grow along with the experience of the students and educators who use it. Their OER provides practical advice for reading and writing about college-level texts (books, articles, websites, visual texts, videos, and other multimedia). It guides students to work with these texts in different ways, according to the demands …

Calendars In Alma--Seriously???, Tari Keller May 2017

Calendars In Alma--Seriously???, Tari Keller

Library Presentations

Coming from Voyager, after over 16 years of setting up and updating calendars for a multi-library university, configuring the calendars in Alma was confusing. The calendars in Alma use the standard hours for major terms as a starting point. Exceptions are defined by “Closing” the library to shorten the hours and “Opening” the library to extend the hours, instead of giving the hours of operation on the days when exceptions occur. The University of Kentucky has everything from a 24 x 5+ main library to a 40 hour a week storage facility. Library hours change between semesters and do different …

Flattening Funds: Using Alma Fund Structure & Reporting Codes, Kate Seago May 2017

Flattening Funds: Using Alma Fund Structure & Reporting Codes, Kate Seago

Library Presentations

The University of Kentucky had been on Voyager since 2001. We had built a complex fund structure using reporting funds to map funds accurately over to the University’s SAP system and provide break downs by subject and format. In addition, the Acquisitions Department Head had been relying on an access report and a code in the invoice note field to provide accurate ARL statistics. When the Libraries migrated to Alma in January 2016, it quickly became apparent that the fund structure would need substantial reworking to be functional in Alma. Starting in July 2017, a new fund structure was implemented …

Business In The Front, Party In The Back: Revising Metadata Processes Up-Front To Benefit Back-End Workflows, Scott Bacon

Library Faculty Presentations

When faced with the prospect of manually uploading thousands of collection objects into our digital repository, I knew I needed to create a workflow to automate batch uploading processes. This resulted in a workflow that allows me to take a metadata spreadsheet containing thousands of rows and transform it into a series of MODS XML files contained in one master file, using OpenRefine's templating tool. The csplit command can be used to split the master file up into thousands of fully-formed MODS XML files. Using a Perl script, the files can be batch renamed to match their corresponding digital object …

Ten of 23 CSU campuses have self-check machines in service. Each campus presented its own unique challenges for migrating to a new system including various self-check vendors, options on self-check machines, authentication procedures, and usage of automated materials handling systems. Our group of five was tasked with creating standardized goals and procedures for linking our self-check systems to Alma despite myriad configurations. Our goal for …

Reading And The Good Life: An Analysis Of Print And Digital Readers In Suburban Libraries, Yijun Gao, Matt Isaia May 2017

Reading And The Good Life: An Analysis Of Print And Digital Readers In Suburban Libraries, Yijun Gao, Matt Isaia

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Life-long reading has positive effects on our lives and health. This study examines the ways in which adult library patrons read today. Using circulation statistics from four public libraries in the north suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, we explore the differences in reader preferences between traditional print reading (print book checkouts) and e-reading (eBook downloads). This data analysis provides insights on adult patrons’ use of public libraries today (i.e. the most likely genre to be checked out are fiction and the preferred reading method is print). This paper also offers some practical suggestion on libraries’ collection development, as well as readers’ …

Counting, Then Re-Counting: National Statistical Reporting From Within Alma And From Alma Analytics, Julene L. Jones

Library Presentations

National statistics are collected and reported by libraries for a variety of reasons. The presenter was recently asked to report statistics about her library's collections for ARL, AAHSL, ABET, CEAL and IPEDS, each of whom ask a variety of questions about disparate data points. Her institution recently migrated from Voyager to Alma, and she found that the data is not comparable between the prior and subsequent years to this migration. The differing statistical collection methods between Voyager and Alma / Analytics will be discussed, and if time allows, the presenter would appreciate any tips for collecting collection-based data and its …

Information Use In Design: What Should We Be Teaching?, Amy S. Van Epps May 2017

Information Use In Design: What Should We Be Teaching?, Amy S. Van Epps

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Librarians are regularly working to understand how students make decisions around information use to inform the development of more relevant learning activities. The more relevant the activities when students are learning any new skill, the more likely they are to understand the task and incorporate the learning into future design decisions and writing. The need to build connections and understanding is critical in adoption of information literacy. In this study, the researcher analyzed the transcript from an end of semester focus group with students in a design class about their information use during the semester project. The transcript was analyzed …

Unbuilt Clemson: A Story Of Institutional Resilience, Dennis Taylor, Kathy Edwards May 2017

Unbuilt Clemson: A Story Of Institutional Resilience, Dennis Taylor, Kathy Edwards

Presentations

Unbuilt Clemson (slated for publication in Spring 2020 by Clemson University Press) is an in-depth excavation—from institutional records, archival evidence, and oral histories—of selected unrealized building projects throughout the history of campus development and planning at Clemson University, with a focus on projects developed to the building design or site plan stage. Six chapters, a dozen case studies, and 50+ illustrations will span the years 1890-2017, documenting how campus planners both shaped and accommodated Clemson’s evolution from an all-male, cadet-corps “agricultural and mechanical” college to a 21st-century, nationally-ranked Carnegie R-1 institution with an international student body and an expanding global …
