Library professionals are facing the same increasing pervasiveness of technology as other professions. Technology gives librarians positive new tools for managing and delivering information, but also changes modes of communication and collaboration with our patrons. This qualitative study explores the connection between the influx of virtual communication and its impact on collaboration and job satisfaction among academic librarians.

Although libraries are often regarded as spaces for inclusiveness, diversity, and democracy, this hasn’t always been the case in the United States. Using historical examples this article explores the legacy of racism in the United States concerning library access to citizens. This article analyzes a social justice artistic collaboration between artist Jackie Sumell and New York Public Library concerning solitary confinement and the racial disparity of mass incarceration in the United States. Intersections between community education and library exhibits are also discussed.

Conceptualizing Classified Staff As Collaborative Partners, Michael Perini

Collaborative Librarianship

Academic librarians have varied roles within the higher education community and librarian perceptions of these duties establish their professional identity. Applying Whitchurch’s “blended professional” model of professional identity, the findings of this case study of librarian perceptions of their roles and functions suggest that academic librarians fail to consider all of the collaborative partnerships available to them due to institutional restrictions or perceived structural and hierarchical constraints. This discussion analyzes the effect of these impediments on academic librarians and advocates utilizing classified staff in a more substantive manner.

In 2011 the Chancellor at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL) charged each department and academic unit within the university to create programs and strategies to increase student enrollment within the next six years. The UNL Libraries embraced this goal by becoming more involved in the first-year experience programs and the first-year learning communities. This chapter details the development and implementation of an Introduction to Digital Humanities course (ENGL 695) at Kansas State University (K-State). The course originated with a tenure-track professor with a research specialty in British Romantic-period Literature and the digital humanities. In conjunction with a host of librarians at K-State Libraries, a course was developed that drew on both library resources and librarian knowledges and skills. Over the course of the semester, the professor and the students worked closely with librarians in many areas of the library, including public services, technical services and special collections. As the need for research data management grows, many libraries are considering adding data services to help with the research mission of their institution. The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Libraries created a position and hired a director of research data management in September 2013. The position was new to the libraries and the university. With the backing of the library administration, a plan for building relationships with VCU faculty, researchers, students, service and resource providers, including grant administrators, was developed to educate and engage the community in data management plan writing and research data management training.

Treasure Hunt Without A Map: Archival Research At The University Of Pennsylvania, Meghan Strong

English and Creative Writing Independent Study Projects

Under the supervision of Meredith Goldsmith in the English Department, I spent this semester developing archival research projects for lower level students in the humanities. My project corresponded with the aims of the Council for Undergraduate Research, which works to develop undergraduate research skills throughout the disciplines. The Kislak Center is a nearby resource that has the potential to provide students with opportunities to develop crucial research skills while discovering little pieces of history that are hidden away in the archives. The final exercises presented here focus on the subjects of Walt Whitman, Marian Anderson, and Michel de Montaigne.

Library videos are common on YouTube, but finding the time and resources to produce them is a challenge. A collaboration among the engineering librarians, the College of Engineering Teaching Excellence Institute, Library IT, and the Research and Assessment Unit at Cornell identified resources and resulted in the production of 8 videos for specific classes in materials science and biomedical engineering. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of scanned text enables full-text searching. Unfortunately, OCR software does not produce 100% accurate representation of the text, especially with older works having varying fonts, odd layouts and ink bleed-through. Led by Missouri Botanical Garden, and partnering with New York Botanical Garden, Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology and Cornell, an IMLS-funded project has developed 2 games to engage the public in correcting inaccurately OCRed text in BHL.

Due to the partnership between information literacy and first-year writing programs, it is important to evaluate how these programs can best support one another. On Jan 15, 2015, The Wall Street Journal reported Google was winding down the explorers program" and will stop selling Glass, except to companies and developers. Google is moving the project to another Google unit to continue exploration and development of the product, but its precise future is currently unclear. This article was being developed before Google pulled the plug. It was clear to them after extensive use that Glass was a potentially wonderful device, but, at the moment, it won't solve any specific need that can't be fixed using other more affordable and less intrusive mobile devices. Project description: Part of a suite of five tutorials developed to provide online research support for freshman just learning academic research skills, as well as sophomore and junior transfer students who might need remedial instruction about the research process and academic library services. This 25-minute tutorial helps students identify a paper topic that is not too narrow or too broad, select evidence that will answer their research question, and brainstorm keywords to find pertinent resources.

Library classifications are artificial systems that use numbers, letters, and symbols to map knowledge as the basis for organizing the contents of libraries. Inevitably influenced by social forces and cultural values, the Dewey Decimal, Cutter Expansive, and Library of Congress classification systems offer a unique perspective to study the status and identity of dance between 1876 and 1930. From the standpoint of library taxonomies, dance evolves during this period from an indoor amusement with moral implications to a recognized art form and discipline.

This case study describes how the digital literacy acquisition program in a rural community was sustained through formal and informal connections across a variety of organizations and community institutions. The case study describes the setting, the details of how tutor facilitated, self paced learning was organized, and the various ways connections were made across organizations. Five types of connections are identified: formal top-level partnerships, local connections, library/workforce partnership, school/workforce connections, informal community connections, and lab coordinator/tutor/learner connections.
