To better understand the university research and teaching needs, the University Institutional Repository Committee conducted a study entitled: "Faculty and Staff's Awareness of Digital Commons @Otterbein Repository Service for Teaching and Research" in 2015. This campus presentation demonstrated the survey results of the study.

Collaborate To Innovate: Expanding Access To Faculty Patents Through The Institutional Repository And The Library Catalog, Andrew Wesolek, Jan Comfort, Lisa Bodenheimer

Publications

Institutional repositories and library catalogs have long been used to promote and provide access to scholarly articles, monographs, and other “traditional” forms of scholarship. However, faculty at many institutions participate in “non-traditional” forms of research, such as patents. This work explores the use of Clemson University’s institutional repository and library catalog in promoting and providing access to the patents granted to its inventors. More specifically, the authors outline the project from generating metadata for patents, and cross-walking it into a form that can be batch uploaded to a bepress Digital Commons Repository. In the Spring 2015 issue of Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal, Kimberly Connor described building an Ignatian Pedagogy Faculty Learning Community at the University of San Francisco. One outcome of the FLC was to gather and make easily available a collection of resources on Jesuit education and the IPP (Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm). Library Assessment And Data Analytics In The Big Data Era: Practice And Policies, Hsin-Liang Chen, Philip Doty, Carol Mollman, Xi Niu, Jen-Chien Yu, Tao Zhang

Emerging technologies have offered libraries and librarians new ways and methods to collect and analyze data in the era of accountability to justify their value and contributions. For example, Gallagher, Bauer and Dollar (2005) analyzed the paper and online journal usage from all possible data sources and discovered that users at the Yale Medical Library preferred the electronic format of articles to the print version. After this discovery, they were able to take necessary steps to adjust their journal subscriptions. Many library professionals advocate such data-driven library management to strengthen and specify library budget proposals.

Random Ramblings — Scholarly Publishing In Retirement, Robert P. Holley

In the article, the author discusses whether it is easier for academics to continue publishing scholarly articles when they retire, particularly in the U.S. He cites his own experiences to discuss the issue. He also cites his retirement as faculty at Wayne State University, his membership to the American Library Association (ALA) Retired Members Round Table (RMRT), and the survey he conducted on the issue.

The poinsettia has undergone a remarkable transformation since the day some 800 years ago when the Aztecs plucked it from the wilds of Mexico to decorate their courtyards and medicate the infirm.

From November 9 to 28, wild, heirloom, and modern poinsettias in full flower will grace the lobby of Clemson University’s Cooper Library for everyone to appreciate. Banners and historical documents will accompany the display to help guide visitors along the implausible route the humble poinsettia traveled from gangly Mexican shrub to iconic Christmas flower.

National Native American Heritage month is a time to honor the contributions, achievements, sacrifices, and cultural and historical legacy of the original inhabitants of the United States.

A wide range of library materials have been pulled and placed on display to coincide with Native American Heritage month. Included are works on Native American history, art, sports, Native American literature and lore, contemporary fiction including Native American characters, music, health, and law.

“To Support The Southern Medical Public”: The Medical College Of Georgia As A Southern Information Agency, 1828–1861, Brenton Stewart

Faculty Publications

A traditional perspective situates nineteenth-century southern academic library culture as a late nineteenth-century phenomenon. This article challenges that assertion and traditional beliefs about the South's indifference to cultural advancement by examining the print culture of one of the South's leading educational institutions, the Medical College of Georgia. An antebellum in­formation agency, the Medical College of Georgia leveraged its medical li­brary, museum, and journal to transform medical information production, dissemination, and consumption in the South and represents an important symbol of southern modernity. This article presents a distinct analysis of early nineteenth-century southern medicoscientific information culture.

What would happen if the same metadata creates multiple structures that focuses on highlighting faculty scholarship? At Georgia Southern University, the library staff reuses the same metadata to produce virtual bibliographies and bookshelves, faculty profiles, altmetrics, and an expertise search. Peer-reviewed publications initially are entered into departmental bibliographies and bookshelves in our institutional repository, Digital Commons@Georgia Southern. Only publications that faculty have published while at Georgia Southern are included. These citations are collected into university-wide bibliographies and bookshelves and SelectedWorks faculty profiles. The SelectedWorks faculty profiles also include peer-reviewed publications that faculty produced outside of Georgia Southern as well as …

The landscape around alternative metrics has been evolving rapidly. Going from a twitter hashtag in 2011 to a key component in research evaluation at many institutions, metrics that move beyond citation counts and journal impact factor are here to stay. Metrics can now be harvested and applied to research around usage, captures, mentions, and social media, in addition to citations, giving a much more comprehensive and holistic view of impact. Investigating the use of gold open access content within subscription content has been a near impossible task until the adoption of the COUNTER 4 statistics in 2014. By reviewing the COUNTER JR1 GOA 2014 reports, two librarians evaluate the gold open access usage at their respective institutions from the following publishers: Elsevier, NPG, Sage, Springer, and Wiley. This initial investigation will be a benchmark for future studies to see if there is any impact on subscribed content or if usage is limited to non-subscribed content from these providers. “I Am More Productive In The Library Because It’S Quiet”: Commuter Students In The College Library, Mariana Regalado, Maura A. Smale

Publications and Research

This article discusses commuter students’ experiences with the academic library, drawn from a qualitative study at the City University of New York. Undergraduates at six community and baccalaureate colleges were interviewed to explore how they fit schoolwork into their days, and the challenges and opportunities they encountered. Students identified physical and environmental features that informed their ability to successfully engage in academic work in the library. They valued the library as a distraction-free place for academic work, in contrast to the constraints they experienced in other places—including in their homes and on the commute.
