The Repository As Publisher: Opportunities And Challenges In A Dual Role, Benjamin Hockenberry Mar 2015

The Repository As Publisher: Opportunities And Challenges In A Dual Role, Benjamin Hockenberry

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Introductory slides to a panel at the conference "Publishing in Libraries," delivered on March 20, 2015 at the College at Brockport, State University of New York. The panel abstract follows:

Over the last two decades, in tandem with the building support for open access worldwide, academic libraries of all sizes have expanded their support of public dissemination of research beyond their walls. Through the establishment of institutional repositories, libraries are openly sharing articles, presentations, media, and data files published elsewhere. In a related -- but in some ways strikingly different -- role, libraries are acting as publishers of new content …

Publishing At Fisher: The First Two Years, Alicia Marrese, Benjamin Hockenberry

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Since its 2012 launch, St. John Fisher College’s institutional repository (IR), Fisher Digital Publications, has expanded and its staffing model has evolved. Due to an increasing popularity and demand for new projects in our IR, Fisher determined that a dedicated coordinator was needed. In this presentation, we will illustrate the changes in workflow that followed the adaptation of a staff member’s role to include repository coordination duties.

The division of workload is the centerpiece of this poster. Staff and students from all library departments are involved in the publishing enterprise. Each person involved brings their expertise and strengths to other …

Identifying Open Access Articles Within The Top Ten Closed Access Lis Journals: A Global Perspective, Jayati Chaudhuri, Sarah Baker Mar 2015

Identifying Open Access Articles Within The Top Ten Closed Access Lis Journals: A Global Perspective, Jayati Chaudhuri, Sarah Baker

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Librarians have embraced the open access movement. They work to raise awareness of issues surrounding scholarly communication, to educate faculty about authors’ rights, and to help implement and maintain institutional repositories (IRs). But for all of the research and commentary from librarians about the importance of IRs and of making research freely available, there still exists the glaring contradiction that few librarians and Library and Information Science (LIS) authors provide free access to their own research publications. In this study, we will look at the open access availability of articles from the top 20 closed access LIS journals and discuss …

Travel And Publicity, Abby M. Rolland

Blogging the Library

So in the past couple weeks (interrupted by Spring Break), I spent time cross-checking the PR files with the Finding Aid for them in Word, which some of the interns last summer compiled. It’s incredibly detailed and I only made a few additions – they did a really good job! Since then, I’ve been reading and researching a travel journal written in 1898 by Kate Burr Draper Whiting. I just finished reading and taking notes on it today and it’s incredibly fascinating. Whiting, around 60 years old at the time, took a two and a half month long “cruise” with …

"Hulk Smash”™ Busting The Oaa Silo!, Stacy Celata Mar 2015

"Hulk Smash”™ Busting The Oaa Silo!, Stacy Celata

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

This poster focuses on Lavery Library’s collaboration with the Office of Academic Affairs, OAA. At St. John Fisher College students with learning disabilities testing accommodations take their exams in the library instead of a testing center. This is unique because OAA is located in another building from the library and therefore they have to coordinate scheduling of a proctor and student in room they do not control. The library also balances the needs of the general student population and the needs of OAA by offering students other study locations in the library while testing is in progress. The library then …

Birds Of A Feather Learn Together: How Four Academic Libraries’ Teachers Flocked Around Acrl’S Threshold Concepts, Nancy Greco, Kim Hoffman

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

This poster illustrates how St. John Fisher, SUNY Geneseo, the University of Rochester, and Monroe Community College librarians use collaborative learning techniques and semi-annual meetings to improve their teaching.

In the early 2000s, SUNY Geneseo’s Instruction & Reference Services Team librarians began devoting uninterrupted time to share successes and challenges in information literacy instruction and assimilate new concepts and trends into their practice. After two former SUNY Geneseo librarians joined the Fisher team, the two libraries came together to plan joint meeting where information literacy was to be the main focus. For three years, instruction librarians at Geneseo and their …

Multimedia Resources Statistics: Understanding Usage Of Non-Text Resources, Jen Hoyer, Katie O'Connell, Elizabeth A. Tietjen

Publications and Research

As budget cuts are a constant threat and resource costs continue to rise, libraries rely on usage data to be sure that they are delivering the content faculty and students need. Simultaneously, patrons are increasingly accessing multimedia content in the library, and usage reporting standards, like COUNTER’s Release 4, have adapted to reflect this use. This poster explores whether usage of text and non-text resources be compared according to the same measurements, as well as what best practices have emerged, and what gaps remain in current reporting methods.

The Librarians Librarian: (Re)Developing The Online Program Librarian, Christina Hillman, Katie Sabourin

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Being an Online Program Librarian means being the person who keeps abreast of new and developing educational technology, who can troubleshoot Blackboard or other online learning environments, and who can (co)develop authentic information literacy instruction (ILI) for various online courses. However, at Lavery Library I am not the person serving online and distance students, but rather the person serving liaison librarians through collaboration with the Educational Technologist and faculty.

Building on this idea, I have been developing my role as the Assessment and Online Program Librarian since summer 2013. Through collaboration with the Educational Technologist I have been able to …

Barriers To Information Seeking By Secondary School Students In Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria, Chidinma Onwuchekwa Ogba

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper investigated barriers to information seeking in Secondary School Libraries in Ado-Ekiti by using Kuhlthau’s framework of intermediation with Harris and Dewdney’s principles on information seeking. A random sampling technique was used to select five Private Secondary Schools (out of twenty Private Secondary Schools) in Ado-Ekiti while saturation sampling was used in selection of participants for this research. A Case study design using focus group discussion, observation and unstructured interview methods were used. A focus group discussion (group interview) was used to gather data separately from JSS II and SSS II students in each school; it was recorded using …

Data Information Literacy And Undergraduates: A Critical Competency, Yasmeen Shorish Mar 2015

Data Information Literacy And Undergraduates: A Critical Competency, Yasmeen Shorish

Libraries

As a primer on data information literacy (DIL), this column will cover the background of the field and why it is relevant to college and university libraries serving undergraduate populations. This article includes how data information literacy relates to information literacy, competencies associated with DIL, the relevance of DIL to undergraduates, DIL in library instruction, and the reasons for library engagement with DIL. Examining DIL within the larger framework of information literacy can help outreach and instruction librarians engage with a format that may be unfamiliar to them but whose underlying foundation is well-established.

So Many Choices!, Megan E. Fowle

Blogging the Library

As the semester progresses, I have been working on many little projects to get a feel for the different aspects of reference librarianship. One of the projects that I just finished working on was a collections development project, in which I got to work closer with one of our reference librarians, Kerri. Collection development is an ongoing process, for there are always more books being written and published. [excerpt]
