E-Book Usage On A Global Scale: Patterns, Trends, And Opportunities, Michael Levine-Clark
E-Book Usage On A Global Scale: Patterns, Trends, And Opportunities, Michael Levine-Clark
University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship
This study examines worldwide usage of over 600,000 e-books from Ebook Library (EBL) and ebrary. Using multiple modes of analysis, the study shows that there are variations in usage by geographic region as well as by subject. The study examines usage in relation to availability of titles, different types of usage per session, usage of the top ten percent of titles, and intensive and extensive use. These patterns can be used for benchmarking and as a model for local e-book studies.

Tactical Destabiliazation For Economic Justice: The First Phase Of The 1984-2004 Rhythm & Blues Royalty Reform Movement, Matt Stahl
FIMS Publications
This article examines an early (1980s) phase in a two-decade effort towards ‘royalty reform’ in the US recording industry, whereby ageing African American rhythm & blues performers sought to redress systematic underpayment of record royalties. The record companies to which these performers had signed in the 1940s and 1950s had contractually obligated themselves to provide biannual statements of royalty accounts, and to pay artists record royalties, once initial costs had been recouped. Yet this is rarely how things turned out, and many performers found themselves broke and vulnerable as they reached retirement age, even though many of their records had …

How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bits: Archival Motivation In The Digital Age, Heather Ryan, Jane Nelson
How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bits: Archival Motivation In The Digital Age, Heather Ryan, Jane Nelson
Library and Information Science: Student Scholarship
Why do people become archivists? Historically (and anecdotally) it was a deep love of musty, old records that drew people to the profession. While there have been many other motivating forces that inspired would-be archivists, it is most often that one hears of people seeking jobs in archives for love of “the stuff,” as evidenced in Kate Thiemer’s blog post, Honest tips for wannabe archivists (2012).
As a result of the continually advancing presence of digitized and born digital archival collections, the physical nature of archival “stuff” is changing. While there remains the physical imprint of digital information on floppy …

Foregrounding The Research Log In Information Literacy Instruction, Louise R. Fluk
Foregrounding The Research Log In Information Literacy Instruction, Louise R. Fluk
Publications and Research
Updating an earlier study, this article reviews the literature of information literacy (IL) instruction since 2008 for empirical evidence of the value of research logs or research journals for effective pedagogy, assessment, and prevention of plagiarism in IL instruction at the college level. The review reveals a mismatch between the acknowledged theoretical and practical value of research log assignments and the mixed advocacy for them in the literature. The article further analyzes the literature for the drawbacks of research log assignments and points toward ways of mitigating these drawbacks.

Developing A Data Narrative: Analyzing Trends In An Academic Interlibrary Loan Department, Heather Grevatt
Developing A Data Narrative: Analyzing Trends In An Academic Interlibrary Loan Department, Heather Grevatt
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
Between 2010 and 2015 interlibrary loan request rates at Albertsons Library at Boise State University were observed to be in decline. This study details the efforts to explore this trend and determine a cause using existing data available through the OCLC Atlas ILLiad Web Reports interface. A simple, but effective method to analyze these substantial reports is presented and practical examples of analysis conducted at Albertsons Library are discussed. By looking at factors such as usage patterns, new user registrations, and cancelation language, the decrease in borrowing and lending requests was confirmed and attributed primarily to decreases in graduate student …

After The Book: Information Services For The 21st Century, Chuck Hodgin
After The Book: Information Services For The 21st Century, Chuck Hodgin
Library Faculty Scholarship
Both inside and outside of the library, the use of print information objects declines while the use of electronic information objects escalates. This phenomenon and how libraries respond to it should be the chief concerns of librarians going forward, according to author George Stachokas. Stachokas argues that nearly everything about the practice of current librarianship is rooted in "the print era" and is therefore "intrinsically linked to the physical library" (35). Given that society "increasingly abandons print" (1), librarians face the daunting task of reshaping themselves and their profession; otherwise, they "risk the problem of seeming and becoming obsolete" (36). …
Reviewing Political Controversy: Book Reviewers Assess Childrens Literature Set In Israel/Palestine, Christina M. Desai
Reviewing Political Controversy: Book Reviewers Assess Childrens Literature Set In Israel/Palestine, Christina M. Desai
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Abstract Because book reviewers influence which books are purchased for libraries and schools, it is important to understand the explicit or implicit criteria they employ. Reviewer practices with books on politically controversial topics set in Israel/Palestine and available to a US audience often reflect partisan views, with the dominant political discourse favouring the Israeli position, although this is far from ubiquitous. While some reviews avoid addressing the books' politics, others are decidedly partisan. Many base their evaluations on their estimation of the degree of hope and political balance achieved in the works, yet these expectations are applied selectively. Some expect …
