Neoliberalism And Library & Information Science: Using Karl Polanyi’S Fictitious Commodity As An Alternative To Neoliberal Conceptions Of Information, Jonathan Cope

This paper examines the Library & Information Science (LIS) and Knowledge Organization (KO) literature on neoliberalism and argues that insufficient attention has been paid to the neoliberal conception of information’s relationship to the market. After an examination of the LIS and KO literature on neoliberalism, the key claims of neoliberalism with regards to information and markets are scrutinized and the role of the Internet is discussed. Karl Polanyi’s concept of the fictitious commodity is used to examine the ways in which markets are embedded within society and to provide an alternative to neoliberalism.

With the emergence of digital collections in libraries, museums, and other cultural institutions, catalogers are redefining their roles by participating in digital projects, creating, maintaining, and developing non-traditional metadata records. This article provides a discussion on how catalogers are ensuring that the cataloging legacies of quality control, authority control, and creative cataloging become important components in the creation of descriptive metadata for digital projects.

Interactively engaging students can significantly help them understand key concepts [Hake 1998]. Additionally, students are most likely to recall the first five minutes of a presentation [Burns 1985]. Capitalizing on both of these, we altered the beginning of PHYS 272 (ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC INTERACTIONS) recitation to include a series of qualitative, “tiered,” iClicker questions that interactively engage students and socratically teach fundamental principals in electricity and magnetism.

The series begin with a question that most students comfortably and correctly answer. Successive questions increase in difficultly and the series stops with most students struggling to identify the correct answer. Along the …

Our poster will focus on the process of creating and maintaining a technology-enabled flipped classroom to enable information. In the 2013 school year, a team of librarians in the Parrish Library for Management and Economics transformed a business information literacy course from a traditional lecture, 40-student, computer-lab class into multiple sections of a flipped, 70 student, computer-less class in order to meet the request of the department that the successful course be required for all 500 students. Computer programming is a difficult field for students to learn, while the most effective teaching strategies are not known conclusively. Educator’s opinions vary as to the optimal approach. It is largely a point of agreement however that programming, as an applied field, is learned more quickly as a function of practice. Traditional lecture approaches impose a passive mindset upon the student and uses valuable time. The primary purpose of EDPS 23500 is simply that students would learn how people learn. Of course, key to meeting this objective is an understanding of developmental and motivational considerations in creating environments conducive to learning as well as knowing how to identify when learning has actually taken place (i.e., assessment). When teaching teachers about teaching, the structure of the course is itself instructive.

Evaluating Scholarly Book Publishers—A Case Study In The Field Of Journalism., Tina M. Neville, Deborah Boran Henry

By adapting multiple metrics used for journal article evaluation and replicating recent publisher metrics, the authors tested methods for evaluating scholarly book publishers. Using monographs published in journalism between 2007 and 2011 as a test case, results indicate these methods may be useful to other scholarly disciplines.

These digital portfolios showcase and promote their body of scholarship, on a stable platform and with a permanent URL. The USFSP Digital Archive offers 24/7 open access to the “Faculty Works” collections, provides full-text indexing that is harvested regularly by Google, Google Scholar, and other indexers, and tracks usage to demonstrate the increasing visibility of faculty work to researchers outside of the home institution. In addition, she has co-authored a book on library research skills for undergraduate science students.

INTRODUCTION Research on institutional repositories (IR) has primarily focused on issues related to faculty scholarship. Thus far, little has been written on issues related to student scholarship. This lack is problematic for planners developing or extending their IR content who may be considering adding student scholarship. METHODS A 23-question survey of library professionals was conducted to explore size of institution, existence of an IR, IR software packages utilized, individuals involved in system management, levels of support for inclusion of student work in IRs, types of student work included, and workflow submission policies. In 1946, Simon & Schuster published Rabbi Joshua Loth Liebman's bestselling book Peace of Mind, a self-help manual that explained how psychiatry and religion together could help individuals achieve emotional and spiritual maturity, and ultimately happiness. At the time of its publication, Liebman was a rabbi at Boston's Temple Israel and was well known from his sermons on the NBC radio program Message to Israel, broadcast in Boston and New York City. CUNY’s Library Information Literacy Advisory Committee (LILAC) will celebrate its tenth anniversary in February 2015. A decade ago twenty librarians from all CUNY libraries came together to review the mission of a new professional committee and establish its charge. Since then the committee members have been working hard and have succeeded in integrating information literacy across the City University curriculum. They have been creating information literacy tutorials and assessment tools, providing support to all CUNY librarians by coordinating and running professional development meetings, seminars, and conferences.
