Academic institutions’ digital collections often face the challenging issue of not having enough professionals to create metadata for the thousands of digital objects that exist in their collections. Anybody can scan, but not everyone is cut out for metadata creation. However, universities abound with intellectual and energetic pre-professionals, a.k.a. students. Instead of assigning student workers and volunteers to perform purely menial tasks, why not tap into their ability to learn and train them to do more “professional” jobs, such as metadata creation and website maintenance? With an entire campus filled with students eager to gain experience and willing to study, …
Assessment Of First-Year Composition Students' Information Literacy Skills, Erin E. Rinto
Assessment Of First-Year Composition Students' Information Literacy Skills, Erin E. Rinto
Lied Library Open House for the 2014 American Library Association Conference
One of the ways we have been assessing the information literacy skills of our first year students is through developing and applying rubrics to a sample of annotated bibliography projects from the required English Composition course at UNLV. The annotated bibliography assignment consists of a paper proposal and the annotations for 5 sources the student plans on using in their final research paper. The "source evaluation rubric" was applied to each individual annotation (totaling 1358 annotations) and the rubric examined the extent to which students were using the evaluative criteria of currency, relevance, and authority when selecting and evaluating an …

Unlv Libraries: Partners In Student Learning, Melissa Bowles-Terry
Lied Library Open House for the 2014 American Library Association Conference
The University Libraries play a central educational role at UNLV. Librarians offer workshops for faculty on assignment design and research on student learning. The workshops emphasize learning outcomes, active learning, and assessment of student learning. Institutes leverage UNLV Librarians’ expertise with facilitation and information literacy learning outcomes.
Learning Outcomes for Faculty Institutes:
- To understand how research-based learning approaches support student success.
- To articulate goals and learning outcomes for research assignments in order to communicate expectations to students and form the basis for assessment of student work.
- To investigate research-based learning activities that integrate library and information resources.
- To discover technology …
Curriculum Mapping At Unlv Libraries: Strategic Integration Of Library Instruction, Nancy E. Fawley
Curriculum Mapping At Unlv Libraries: Strategic Integration Of Library Instruction, Nancy E. Fawley
Lied Library Open House for the 2014 American Library Association Conference
Curriculum mapping is a strategy to integrate information literacy into the undergraduate curriculum by identifying key courses within the disciplines for targeted, library instruction.
Librarians identify high impact, beginning, middle and end-level courses within their disciplines. These may or may not be courses they currently work with.
Information competencies are introduced at a beginning level, then reinforced (mid-level) and enhanced (end) throughout a student’s academic career in an intentionally scaffolded manner. Assessment strategies are included the map, as well.
Librarians use curriculum maps to inform decisions on courses and content taught so instruction efforts are not duplicated.

Lied Library Open House for the 2014 American Library Association Conference
Over the past eight years, the UNLV Libraries have led and contributed to campus initiatives to revise the undergraduate curriculum and student learning outcomes at UNLV. Through formal and informal leadership roles, librarians helped to create the University Undergraduate Learning Outcomes (UULOs) in the areas of Intellectual Breadth and Lifelong Learning, Communication, Inquiry and Critical Thinking, Global/Multicultural Knowledge and Awareness, and Citizenship and Ethics and a revised model for general education.
In Fall 2011, the Faculty Senate approved a vertical pathway of key courses, which serve to integrate and assess the UULOs from a student’s first year of college through …

Bridging The Skills Gap: Enhancing The Student Employee Experience, Rosan Mitola, Amanda Melilli, Amy Jo Hunsaker
Lied Library Open House for the 2014 American Library Association Conference
Academic libraries have a unique opportunity to contribute to the success of their student employees by teaching and developing skill sets necessary for students to be successful throughout their academic careers. A co-curricular workshop program was developed and implemented to prepare student employees for the real world challenges they will face during their academic careers as well as after graduation.
Through participation in a series of one-hour workshops, students acquire skills that aid them in accomplishing academic, personal and professional goals. This workshop series also provides opportunities for the library to engage in the development of their employees in a …

Library Staff Publications and Research
This poster reports results of an assessment of student writing from the first-year seminar/experience programs at five separate undergraduate colleges. Papers (n=416) were coded by level of librarian involvement in the class, and then scored using an Information Literacy rubric. Results indicate that students in courses with higher librarian involvement demonstrate better IL skills (that are statistically significant) than those in courses with low involvement.

Investigation Of Historical Japanese Paper: An Experiment To Recreate Recycled Paper From 18th-19th Century Japan, Kazuko Hioki
Library Presentations
This presentation will discuss the physical characteristics of recycled paper used for Japanese printed books from the18th to 19th century, exploring their production methods and historical developments based on the collaborative experiments with the University of Iowa’s Center for the Book (UICB).
The majority of conservation practices and studies of traditional Japanese paper-based artifacts have focused on the high end arts such as screen paintings and scrolls, luxuriously printed books (such as Sagabon), and certain ukiyoe prints and paintings. Conservators generally have limited knowledge about the printed books and materials used; however, they are the most commonly found traditional Japanese …
Self-Publishing: A New Challenge For Universal Bibliographic Control, Robert P. Holley
Self-Publishing: A New Challenge For Universal Bibliographic Control, Robert P. Holley
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
Self-publishing in the United States has increased to between 50-75% of book titles published annually, facilitated by the popularity of ebooks and print-on-demand. Amazon.com and other companies have encouraged the trend by paying royalties and providing support to authors. This increase in self-published materials poses a new challenge for Universal Bibliographic Control (UBC). Today, UBC is much different in the age of information overload compared with the relative information scarcity before the arrival of the Internet. Libraries have nonetheless retained an interest in bibliographically controlling traditional books. Self-published books can be indistinguishable from trade publications but fall outside many of …

Engaging Faculty In Information Literacy, Judith M. Arnold, Veronica E. Bielat
Library Scholarly Publications
How can librarians engage faculty in information literacy? This session demonstrates how a faculty workshop can be used as a strategy to motivate change in how faculty design research assignments. We will discuss using current research to draw faculty into the information literacy conversation, perform assignment analysis to illuminate the “burdens” placed on the student, and illustrate how assignment re-design can mitigate the subsequent student struggles that may lead to patchwork papers or plagiarism.

Lavery's Collection Development: At The Corner Of Library Wide Assessment And Value Added Services, Kate Ross, Micquel Little
Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications
St. John Fisher College’s Lavery Library is focused on assessing value. One area being examined is the value of library collections in support of the library’s mission. In an effort to develop our collection at a user level, Lavery instituted a purchase on demand (POD) program in 2009. Increasingly, academic library POD programs are set up to automate the process based on specific criteria that will trigger a purchase, as a way to save time and streamline the process. In Lavery’s case study, Acquisitions has gone completely in the opposite direction, focusing on the service experience for our patrons instead. …

Privacy, Restriction, And Access: Legal And Ethical Dilemmas, Camila Z. Tessler
School of Information Student Research Journal
This paper examines the intersection of privacy and access in archival repositories. Archival repositories are well known for containing restricted material, and for protecting the privacy of the donors. This literature review examines the need for restricted material from both legal and ethical standpoints, as well as discussing culturally sensitive materials while determining what archives and libraries can do to protect both themselves and their donors while enhancing accessibility and freedom of information.

Digitization And Digital Preservation: A Review Of The Literature, Stephanie Routhier Perry
School of Information Student Research Journal
Digitization and digital preservation are rapidly becoming the standard forms of preservation for libraries, archives, and other cultural heritage institutions, yet there is still much confusion as to what they mean and how they are meant to be used. Through a review of the recent literature, this paper aims to define both concepts, as well as find some of the common challenges associated with these preservation processes. Different preservation methods, collaboration techniques, and metadata schema are also discussed.

School of Information Student Research Journal
This article examines the backgrounds, education, and careers of the first group of students in San José State University’s School of Library and Information Science. It finds that the 1928-1929 cohort were typical of the students attending teacher’s colleges in the early 1900s and represented the first generation of women pursuing higher education and professional careers following the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920. The study also explores the challenges working women faced during the 1930s, particularly the Great Depression’s impact California librarians.
