Not All On The Same Page: E-Book Adoption And Technology Exploration By Seniors, Anabel Quan-Haase, Kim Martin, Kathleen Schreurs

FIMS Publications

This paper aims to understand the adoption of e-books and e-readers by persons aged sixty and above. This includes an investigation into where seniors are in the stages of e-book adoption. Method: Data were collected through semi-structured interviews in a mid-size city in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Analysis: Interviews were transcribed, and coded using grounded theory. Rogers's model of the innovation-decision process was used to inform the data analysis process. Results: The results show three key factors affecting adoption: longing for materiality, technology confidence, and technology exploration. While seniors are interested in e-books and e-readers, see many benefits to their use, …

Econtent Quarterly - Volume 1, Issue 4, Sue Polanka, Mirela Roncevic

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Welcome to Issue 4 of eContent Quarterly. The publication of this volume marks the end of the first full year since we launched the journal at the American Library Association in Chicago, so it seems fitting to take a quick trip down memory lane and revisit the topics explored since June 2013. These included, among others, the importance of metadata, the versatility of children’s apps, and the benefits of user-centered design. Previous issues also provided thorough, introductory overviews of e-formats and e-reading devices for librarians overwhelmed by the complexities of the e-book market. They also featured case studies pointing …

Teaching Public Administration In An Age Of Austerity: Librarians And Hybrid Instruction, Ashley Rosener, Lara Jaskiewicz Jun 2014

Teaching Public Administration In An Age Of Austerity: Librarians And Hybrid Instruction, Ashley Rosener, Lara Jaskiewicz

Presentations

Eleanor Crumblehulme recently said, “Cutting libraries in a recession is like cutting hospitals in a plague.” While a number of university libraries have received drastic budget cuts during the current recession, Grand Valley State University (GVSU) has chosen to invest in their library, keeping its services and materials up-to-date and relevant for student learning. Despite receiving the lowest appropriation per student among Michigan state universities, GVSU has embraced new practices in teaching public administration and other disciplines while balancing the need to serve more students with a reduced budget.

The greatest challenge amidst these changes is to continue providing students …

Problems With Authority, Meagan Lacy Jun 2014

Problems With Authority, Meagan Lacy

Open Educational Resources

These presentation materials were used to create an online tutorial for undergraduate students about how to evaluate the authority of an information source. It includes a PowerPoint presentation and lecture notes on an event-driven publication cycle and uses the death of pop star Michael Jackson as its primary example. This resource was designed with the Association of College & Research Libraries' Framework for Information Literacy (2015) in mind and addresses two of the threshold concepts that the Framework identifies: 1) "Authority is Constructed and Contextual," and 2) "Information Creation as a Process." These materials can be easily adapted for …

Practice Makes Perfect: Updating Borrowing Policies And Procedures At A Small Academic Library, Crystal Boyce Jun 2014

Practice Makes Perfect: Updating Borrowing Policies And Procedures At A Small Academic Library, Crystal Boyce

Scholarly Publications

In 2011, staff from the undergraduate libraries at the College of William & Mary came together to evaluate circulation policies related to borrowing periods and billing. In an attempt to better align the policies across each unit, and with the intention of creating a more consistent user experience, new policies were proposed and implemented in the fall of 2012. These changes were found to dramatically decrease staff time necessary for billing, while improving user satisfaction with the borrowing policies. Significantly fewer books went into billing, suggesting no adverse effects on collection maintenance.

What Would Be The Future Of The Integrated Library Systems?, Xiaohua (Cindy) Li Jun 2014

What Would Be The Future Of The Integrated Library Systems?, Xiaohua (Cindy) Li

Librarian Publications

Since the advent of Integrated Library Systems (ILSs) in 1970s, they have gone from being innovative to stagnant. In recent years, the rapid advancement of web technologies and the exponential growth of electronic resources and digital contents have increasingly exposed the weakness of traditional ILSs. The lack of flexibility, interoperability, and efficiency makes the ILSs hardly meet the needs of both internal and external library users. Meanwhile Content Management Systems (CMS) such as Drupal and open source ILSs have gotten much attention due to their technological and economic advantages, and cloud computing has allowed libraries to focus on bigger pictures. …

A Review Of “Going Beyond Google Again: Strategies For Using And Teaching The Invisible Web”, Darren L. Sweeper

University Libraries Scholarship and Creative Works

When confronted with the task of writing a research paper, many students begin the process by using general purpose search engines like Google. It may come as no surprise to professional librarians that commercial search engines are not the most effective tools to use when conducting research for reliable and quality information.

Library Annual Reports Made Easy, Essraa Nawar Jun 2014

Library Annual Reports Made Easy, Essraa Nawar

Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials

No single publication can do more to enhance the reputation, advocate for increased budgets, and support a library than an annual report. Even though an annual report requires time, effort, money, and the cooperation of many contributors to prepare, publish, and distribute, it is a very powerful marketing tool with demonstrated results. To make the process of publishing this yearly report easier, more organized, and more effective, a new approach was implemented in the Leatherby Libraries in 2011 that culminated in recognition as the 2013 national Best of Show at ALA PR Xchange awards with over two hundred entries. The …

Hash Marks To Hashtags; Turning Statistics Into Strategic Value Statements, Melissa Jadlos, Christina Hillman Jun 2014

Hash Marks To Hashtags; Turning Statistics Into Strategic Value Statements, Melissa Jadlos, Christina Hillman

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

The poster will describe an innovative method for tracking library statistics and mapping them to Strategic Plans and Learning Goals. In addition to standard library statistics, previously untracked contributions are documented, such as internal projects and professional development. Using Google Forms, library interactions are collected in one place and turned into value statements. Using Twitter, the library is able to connect these value statements to the library strategic plan by creating a hashtag for each strategic goal. For example: Librarians spend over 200 hours in one-on-one research consultations #laverylearn

Textual Appropriation And Attribution In Engineering Theses And Dissertations: An Exploratory Study, Edward J. Eckel Jun 2014

Textual Appropriation And Attribution In Engineering Theses And Dissertations: An Exploratory Study, Edward J. Eckel

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

This exploratory study seeks to build a clearer picture of the extent to which engineering graduate students use and attribute unquoted verbatim source text in the literature review sections of their theses and dissertations. In addition, it explores whether or not there are differences between master’s and doctoral engineering students in these patterns of copying and attribution and what this might indicate about their potential skill levels in source use.

The study asks the following research questions: (1) Do the literature review sections of engineering master's theses contain longer average verbatim text matches than the corresponding sections of engineering doctoral …
