Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Researchers at the University of Central Florida have access to support for acquiring and managing grants, writing and publishing research results, and performing computational analysis of large data. However, until recently these services were not coordinated at the institutional level and there was no clearinghouse to connect researchers to available support. In response, the UCF Libraries, with input from faculty and relevant campus units, developed a mental model of support and services of interest to university researchers. The model, in the form of an online interactive infographic, illustrates the research lifecycle from inception to completion, identifies support services available to …

This study compares the relationship of four university libraries with their institutions’ data management policies, services, resources, and plans for the future. It combines an examination of public documentation and services advertised by the universities and their libraries with interviews of librarians involved with data management. Four members of the Association of Public and Land- Grant Universities of similar size were selected for comparison: Iowa State University, Oklahoma State University, Kansas State University, and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Information literacy stands beside critical thinking and oral and written communication as fundamental proficiencies required for academic, professional, and personal success. These lifelong learning abilities overlap and intersect in many ways and far beyond library communities. Higher education associations, regional and disciplinary accreditation bodies, and even employers are demanding evidence that students graduate with these skills. Concentration On The Las Vegas Strip: An Exploration Of The Impacts, David G. Schwartz

Looking at two snapshots, albeit from a distance, gives an overview of how concentrated the gaming industry in Nevada has become:

• In 1998, 23 publicly held corporations owned 65 casinos that grossed more than $12 million that year from gaming. These casinos grossed 75.48% of the state’s total gaming revenue that fiscal year.

• In 2012, 22 publicly held corporations owned 70 casinos that grossed more than $12 million that year from gambling, pulling in 78.0% of that state’s total gaming revenue that fiscal year.

Authority Control For Digital Collections: Preparing For Linked Data, Jeremy Myntti, Nate Cothran

One of the first steps to preparing for Linked Data is to identify existing controlled vocabularies with URIs that can be used for representing strings of data. This project demonstrates how an automated authority control project is being used to match names and subjects within the University of Utah’s Digital Library with name and subject authority records available on the Library of Congress’ Linked Data Service.

This article reports the findings of a study that measures the Emotional Intelligence (EI) among librarians in Public Libraries in Malaysia. Public librarians are important assets since they are social agents that advocate the development of a knowledge society in Malaysia. As employees in service organizations, they are expected to be highly dynamic and provide quality services. These jobs involve communicating, empathizing with, understanding, and learning from other members working in the organizations. These skills require not only a high degree of intellectual ability but a high level of EI. EI, therefore, seems essential to be measured for library employees’ …

The Anchor: 2013

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Library of Congress (LC) is in the process of developing a separate thesaurus of genre/form terms, which describe what a work or expression is, rather than what it is about. From the beginning, LC policy specialists realized that to accomplish this undertaking, it would be both necessary and desirable to collaborate with the library community. This article examines and evaluates the various methods of collaboration used by LC in the creation of the genre/form thesaurus.

Open Access has seen increased acceptance in recent years, yet academic libraries continue to struggle with supporting and growing the Open Access institutional repositories (IRs) and increasing faculty awareness of and buy-in for Open Access and related scholarly communication issues. In this presentation, we propose a reframing of Open Access and scholarly communication strategies using the twelve principles of permaculture, an environmental design theory that provides a sustainable architecture for self-maintained agricultural systems modeled from naturally occurring ecosystems (Hemenway, 2009). Interest in student peer-reviewed open-access journals is beginning to grow. Our presentation will explore what it takes to produce such a journal and what it delivers in terms of student experience. We begin with an overview of the value of student research. We will also address student involvement in the Scholarly Communication process, as presented in ACRL’s publication Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy.

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have the potential to radically reshape higher education. MOOCs are available to anyone with an Internet connection, for free or at sharply reduced cost compared to tuition for in-person classes. The pedagogical effectiveness of MOOCs is currently a topic of intense debate. Some people argue that MOOCs will never equal classroom instruction while others believe that they are a democratizing force with the potential to offer education of equal or greater quality than what we have known before.

Forging A New Path: Faculty Buy-In For The Institutional Repository And Open Access Publishing, Carol G. Hixson, Tina Neville, Deborah Henry

Many institutions with institutional repositories have had difficulty getting faculty buy-in to add their content to the institutional repository. The University of South Florida St. Petersburg (USFSP), a separately accredited institution within the USF System, has experienced significant buy-in from its faculty for depositing materials in the institutional repository, known as the USFSP Digital Archive. In a small institution of 5000 students, we have established collections for over one quarter of our faculty, with almost 1400 separate submissions in only two years.
