PeerJ is the Open Access (OA) publisher of a biomedical journal, also called PeerJ. In addition to its peer-reviewed flagship, it runs a preprint server, PeerJ Preprints, to which authors can submit draft, incomplete, and final papers for informal peer review, and to establish precedent. The company’s chief innovation, however, is a novel if untried business model: extending to authors lifetime publication privileges in exchange for a one-time fee. The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), created in 2006, is the result of a collaboration of ten natural history museum and botanical garden libraries seeking to digitize core taxonomic literature and to make it free and openly available throughout the world. Today, the BHL includes fifteen member institutions whose efforts have shaped a collection of over 60,000 titles. It is supported through a combination of membership dues, in-kind support from member institutions, contributions from the user community, and direct support from the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, and it reaches tens of thousands of users each year. Acknowledgement Patterns In Annals Of Library And Information Studies 1999-2012, Gurjeet Kaur Rattan

The present paper analyses the acknowledgements appearing in the research articles and short communications in Annals of Library and Information Studies covering the period 1999-2012. The acknowledgements included in this journal are further analysed in order to find out frequency of their occurrence, types, number of acknowledgements per paper, highly acknowledged individuals, and so on. The results show that slightly more than 20% of communications contain acknowledgements and an average acknowledgement per item is 1.49. The acknowledgements are of composite nature comprising of moral support, technical support, access to facilities, financial support and Peer Interactive Communication type. The most common …

Sense-making in information seeking process is one of the major information seeking models. Questions have been raised about information seekers’ ambiguous needs and focus-shifting tendency relative to sense-making. This paper tackles this problem by reviewing two related approaches and suggesting an alternative interpretation from the semiotic point of view. The author argues that information seeking is often interactive, dynamic, and infinite just as the relationships between sign, object and interpretant posited in Peirce’s semiotics. This research has been conducted of the undergraduate students in the Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. A survey questionnaire was developed and used to collect data on students’ demographics, internet use behavior and purposes of internet use in the Department of Information Science and Library Management. The obtained input data were then evaluated using SPSS and the findings have been interpreted. The study examined the internet access and use among undergraduate students of Bowen University Iwo, Osun state, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was used. The population comprises of 4,800 undergraduate students out of which 300 students were randomly selected from various faculties, 298 questionnaires were correctly filled and analyzed. The result of the findings shows that all respondents access and used the internet. Major access was through their mobile phones with 52.7%, only 6.4 accessed through University Digital centre while none from the library. Respondent used internet daily with 68.9%, 41.6% used internet between 7-9 hours a week and experience …

The paper examined the collection, storage, preservation and other management practices of newspapers at the Serials Department of the KNUST Library. The study was based on the subscription statistics from April 2000 to April 2012, a period of thirteen years available at the Department.Observation was also made to augment data gathered from the newspaper statistics and analyzed descriptively. It was revealed by the statistics that newspapers are subscribed, received and collected on a daily basis (i.e. six days a week) thus creating a huge collection. In light of a high HIV/AIDS prevalence rate among women in Zimbabwe, this study sought to assess the extent to which the Zimbabwe Women’s Resource Centre and Network (ZWRCN) was effective in disseminating HIV/AIDS information to combat the pandemic among women. Literature reviewed that in as much as information was crucial in the fight against HIV/AIDS; there are other strategies that should be employed in combating HIV/AIDS to complement information dissemination activities such as economic empowerment of women and promotion of gender equality. Teaching Government Information In Information Literacy Credit Classes, Emily Rogers

This paper reviews the teaching of credit-bearing information literacy courses and government information, reports questionnaire responses from librarians who teach these courses, and argues that revising the ways we teach government information in for-credit courses will help students achieve information literacy. A focus on government information as critical thinking and subject access resources, rather than as unique documents collections or formats, can remove barriers for researchers, particularly in classes that allow students an entire term to develop skills. Communities that are working to combat exclusion have greater potential for success if they enlist the support of public libraries, which are in many ways ideally situated to welcome marginalized populations and provide programs and services that combat social exclusion. This chapter explains how this adaptability in response to social problems fits with the mandate of public libraries; examines why and how libraries should confront social exclusion; and looks at the Atwater Library and Computer Centre (ALCC) in Westmount, Québec, as an illustration of how this has been successfully accomplished.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to gain insight into patrons' preferences for quick response code (QR code) design as well as data about their potential benefits.

While struggles for affordable tuition take place in state legislatures, universities are taking the movement for affordable classroom materials into their own hands. Seven out of ten students forgo required textbooks due to cost (Redden, 2011). This creates inequality in the classroom as economic privilege determines access to necessary learning materials.
