For more than one hundred years libraries in America have worked in one way or another to include services aimed at ethnic groups, at first mainly in the way of assisting the newly immigrated to become assimilated to mainstream American culture through help in learning English, with basic reading/writing skills, and assistance with social services and applications for citizenship (Rubin, 2004, p. 292). However, it wasn’t until the 1960’s that the importance of community representation in libraries and their staffs came to the forefront of discussions of library policies and practices. The objective of this study is to examine the impact of incorporating user experience study methods into library database purchase and renewal. In the summer of 2013, Purdue libraries introduced a modified standard usability concept (heuristic evaluation, or expert review) into an existing yearly electronic resource evaluation process. Every year librarians already evaluated electronic resources in the collection using a set of parameters including usage statistics but never explicitly included database usability. Introducing more user experience parameters into process allows librarians to record usability errors to be communicated back to database vendors or to be considered for database renewal and …

This poster explores the security, privacy and ethical considerations confronted in supporting digital media courses. Of particular importance to this presentation is the increased role digital storytelling and video composition plays in student learning. Supporting this shift in curriculum, librarians have the opportunity to facilitate an intelligent and integrated move toward the use of these digital tools in classrooms and participate in educating students on media literacy. Librarians supporting the Digital Media Studio at Marquette University share their techniques in educating students on intellectual property issues and in navigating security and privacy problems with shared equipment.

In the rapidly evolving scholarly ecosystem, ‘working better together’ is increasingly important. This session will explore how collaborations between libraries, publishers, and vendors can produce new efficiencies in workflows for library staff and lasting improvements to discoverability for academic researchers. Cross-sector representatives will share sector perspectives and discuss interoperability issues, with a common focus on publisher content, research tools, and library systems.

Panelists’ introductory remarks will explore interoperability issues and implementation implications. To set the stage for cross-sector discussion, Maria Collins (NCSU, Head, Acquisitions and Discovery) will describe NCSU’s technical services reorganization and highlight vendor collaborations. What do acquisitions policies and workflows look like in next-generation systems? How can institutions leverage automated processes to improve efficiency, and what happens when you also belong to a consortium that is looking to increase collaboration? The Orbis Cascade Alliance is a consortium of 37 public and private academic institutions in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In January 2012, the Alliance began a 2-year process of migrating all 37 institutions to a shared ILS. Migrating in 4 cohorts every 6 months, the first cohort of 6 institutions went live with Ex Libris’s Alma and Primo in June 2013. In this presentation, …

Will It Blend? A Practical Approach To Evaluating The Big Deal, David J. Beales, Nikki Demoville

This presentation describes a new approach to evaluating Big Deal packages. This approach enables librarians to negotiate with publishers more effectively by comparing the cost per download of package titles with the expected cost per download of competing publishers’ titles currently provided through interlibrary loan. The element of competition compensates for the effect of inflated journal list prices and, in some cases, will show that a Big Deal package is not the most cost effective way to provide access to articles.

The model uses a publisher’s list price and JR1 data for all titles within a package to sort titles …

Beginning in 2011, there have been several policy changes directly affecting the management, preservation, and accessibility of publically-funded research and resulting research data in the United States. In January 18, 2011 the National Science Foundation (NSF) required data management plans to be submitted with all grant proposals. On February 22, 2013, the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the President of the United States extended a similar requirement to all federal agencies who have a research and development budget of more than $100 million. The Anchor: 2013

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Research Trends In Journal Of Intellectual Property Rights (Jipr): A Bibliometric Study, Velmurugan Chandran

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The purpose of this study is to investigate the bibliometric analysis of Journal of Intellectual Property Rights (JIPR) for selected six years between 2007and 2012. It is found that the highest number of contributions i.e., 56 (19.79 %) were published in the years 2012. The degree of collaboration in this journal is 0.34. Further, the study investigated the authorship pattern, volume wise and issue wise authorship, author’s productivity and the single and multi-authored papers and average citations, page distribution, rank wise geographical distribution of publications and several features.
