Federal government documents serials possess special features that make them particularly difficult to catalog and manage-from government documents-specific machine-readable cataloging fields and coding to Supervisor of Documents numbers and distinctive enumeration. As electronic documents, they present another set of complex cataloging challenges involving the Government Printing Office's (GPO) single-record approach in the early days of providing access online. This article brings three discrete perspectives to a discussion of these challenges. This paper seeks to provide library managers with a theoretical framework for thinking about how change is effected by those in middle management positions. Starting from the principles that change takes place within socio-culturally bounded contexts and is most successful when approached indirectly, two scenarios characteristic of many situations requiring change middle managers commonly face are then put forward. Following each scenario, a possible solution or path towards change is advanced in order to provide the reader with models for putting into practice the theoretical ideas presented. Creating Computer Availability Maps: Increasing Access To Library Resources, Scott Bacon

Our library created computer availability maps in order to provide patrons with real-time availability of computers in the library and information commons. This presentation will review how the library created the computer availability mapping system, including loading Perl scripts onto library computers, linking the computers to an SQL database, programming an administrative console with drag-and-drop capabilities for each machine and publishing the maps to a variety of public interfaces including help desk monitors, web pages, and the mobile library website.

Are Student Affairs Professionals “Educators?:” Student Affairs And The Scope Of The Educational Exemption Of Copyright Law, Dallas Long

Copyright is a critical, emerging issue in American higher education. Copyright restricts how educators use copyrighted materials in teaching activities. Although the fair use doctrine and the educational exemption in U.S. copyright law provide exceptions for educators, student affairs professionals might not meet the standards of the educational exemption. This paper serves as a primer on U.S. copyright law, the fair use doctrine, and the educational exemption. Analyses of case law suggest student affairs professionals should rely on the fair use doctrine rather than the educational exemption when using copyrighted materials for educational purposes.

“Informed learning” is a pedagogy that focuses on learning subject content through engaging with academic or professional information practices. Adopting the position that more powerful learning is achieved where students are taught how to use information and subject content simultaneously, the research reported here investigated an informed learning lesson. Using phenomenographic methods, student’s experiences of the lesson were compared to what the teacher enacted in the classroom. Based on an analysis of student interviews using variation theory, three ways of experiencing the informed learning lesson emerged. Objectives:

The research assessed faculty awareness of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) public access policy and faculty experiences with the copyright terms in their author agreements with publishers.

Methods:

During the fall of 2011, 198 faculty members receiving funding from NIH at a large urban academic institution were invited to participate in an anonymous online survey. A total of 94 faculty members responded to the survey, representing a response rate of 47%.

Results:

Thirty percent of the survey respondents were either unaware of or not familiar with the NIH policy. Further, a significant number of faculty members (97.8%) indicated …

In order to provide culturally responsive instruction to all students, school library professionals need to recognize the various discourses around cultural competence that exist in the field of library and information science (LIS) and understand the broader meanings that are attached to these discourses. This study presents an evaluation of the underlying ideologies that are embedded in the textual responses of a group of LIS students reporting on their perceived levels of cultural competence preparation. The research landscape is growing dramatically, and librarians are examining new roles, services, and types of collaborations to support data-intensive research. This column describes curricular enhancements at one School of Library and Information Science in the United States. Several key areas of data management in which health sciences librarians may wish to build or enhance their skills are outlined. Possible roles and opportunities for health sciences librarians to strategically engage in data management initiatives are also presented.

This annotated bibliography provides a selection of resources that delve into the topic of bias as it relates to library services and collections in the 21^st century. Globalization, corporate hegemony, Internet search engines, and technologies such as virtual reference contribute to an environment where the librarian must be aware of personal and external biases in order to make appropriate decisions. The resources presented touch on ethics, neutrality, social responsibility, advocacy, selection and censorship. This broad spectrum of bias related topics will be especially helpful for librarians providing reference services and collection development in today’s library information environment.

Digital collections projects began at Eastern Illinois University in the mid 1990s. These early projects had specialized interfaces and different storage strategies. With the inception of an institutional repository (IR) in 2011, these collections were brought under a common interface and storage practices. The benefits and challenges of utilizing an IR for the dissemination of legacy digital projects is discussed, along with data storage solutions appropriate for a mid-sized academic library.
