The Anchor: 2013

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Reusable Learning Objects At Itt Dublin: Developing, Sharing And Reusing, Philip Russell

Support services (Former ITT) - Other Resources

Provides an overview of the development of online tutorials at ITT Dublin with a focus on the instructional design using the eLearning software (Articulate Studio). There is a discussion on the integration of these learning objects into the Institutional VLE (Moodle) and the range of evaluative mechanisms are also highlighted.

The author discusses how these tutorials have been shared and adapted for reuse by other Irish higher education institutions.

My first two weeks have been busy and exciting. I have trained with several reference librarians during my shifts at the Reference Desk. Each of them has a different perspective on librarianship, and each of them plays a different role in Musselman Library, but all of them are devoted to making useful resources available to students and faculty and to teaching them how to use these resources. This article presents the data-rich findings of an experiment with enlisting patron-driven/demand-driven acquisitions (DDA) of ebooks in two ways. The first experiment entailed comparison of DDA eBook usage against newly ordered hardcopy materials’ circulation, both overall and ebook vs. print usage within the same subject areas. Secondly, this study experimented with DDA ebooks as a backup plan for unfunded requests left over at the end of the fiscal year.

California State University, San Bernardino launched its’ first ever library laptop lending program in the fall of 2012. During research into policy creation and technical implementation questions of a more general nature emerged. Is the need for library provided laptops declining? Are library provided tablet computers such as iPads replacing laptops? Are libraries providing devices to access eBooks? This session will present two case studies at CSU, San Bernardino, and the preliminary results of a survey into digital device lending by libraries. The article discusses how subscription services for electronic publications can add value to academic libraries. The author looks at the subscription agent for academic periodicals called JSTOR and its platform offered by the ITHAKA subscription service. Additional topics include the June 2011 decision by the American Institute of Physics to discontinue its use of its Scitation electronic publication platform in 2012, as well as the electronic publication platform of the publisher Taylor and Francis. Also discussed are academic libraries' strategies for data management in their work with intermediary subscription providers and intermediary vendors.

In the wake of the recent financial upheaval, there is a feeling in academia that colleges should pay more attention to what employers are saying; and the common concern of employers is that many new hires are coming out of college unprepared.

In job situations that demand approaching problems from a variety of perspectives, using innovative approaches to find solutions, and communicating effectively, employers said these recent graduates were coming up short. They called on educators “to teach [students] the analytical skills, the critical thinking skills and the communication skills that are necessary for almost every job in today’s economy.”

Traditional research tools used by libraries, such as encyclopedias and catalogs (OPACs) were created in an age of print and information scarcity. They have not kept up with changes in the information world which assume an abundance of online information in different formats and interdisciplinary topics which attempt to solve ‘real world’ messy problems and not traditional theoretical questions. The traditional tools rest on an unwieldy and somewhat outdated collaboration between OCLC, LOC, private aggregators, librarians and faculty.
