How can an academic library most effectively participate and expand its contributions to program reviews at the institutional level? By becoming involved in undergraduate reviews, college and university libraries can articulate new and enhanced roles for themselves on campus. Academic libraries have always contributed to a variety of institutional review processes. However, by embracing a more holistic view of its support, the library can expand beyond collection-related metrics to encompass all the ways the library interconnects with the program. Furthermore, by becoming proactively involved with the committee(s) responsible for managing institutional program reviews, libraries can contribute to the governance of …
‘Digital Engagement: America’S Use (And Misuse) Of Marshall Mcluhan’, Edward Comor
‘Digital Engagement: America’S Use (And Misuse) Of Marshall Mcluhan’, Edward Comor
FIMS Publications
Abstract
In recent years the United States has turned to digital technologies to buoy its response to anti-Americanism in the so-called “Muslim world.” At least three concepts appear to be shaping this effort. The first is a marketing-based strategy called “engagement.” The other two are derivations of Marshall McLuhan's “global village” and his aphorism that “the medium is the message.” This article focuses on the uses and misuses of McLuhan's work by foreign policy officials in Washington. It argues that their stated purpose—to empower people and further inter-cultural understanding through dialogue—is dubious. Indeed, pronouncements regarding these potentials now sit uncomfortably …

A Hybrid Model For Managing Standard Usage Data: Principles For E-Resource Statistics Workflows, Amy Fry
A Hybrid Model For Managing Standard Usage Data: Principles For E-Resource Statistics Workflows, Amy Fry
University Libraries Faculty Publications
The migration from print to electronic collections over the last two decades has created a new environment for gathering and assessing collection use. Circulation and reshelving statistics tabulated in-house for journal and index volumes have been replaced by sophisticated, automatic monthly recordings of logins, searches, and full-text downloads provided by database and e-journal vendors. Because libraries often subscribe to thousands of titles from hundreds of sources, they have become awash in a flood of usage data that has proven difficult to collect, manage and assess, despite its value.
An early assessment and explication of the problems with usage data led …

Journals Supporting Terrorism Research: Identification And Investigation Into Their Impact On The Social Sciences, Daryl R. Bullis, Richard Irving
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
A citation analysis of two preeminent terrorism journals (Terrorism and Political Violence and Studies in Conflict and Terrorism) was used to identify 37 additional social science journals of significant importance to terrorism research. Citation data extracted from the Web of Science database was used to investigate the impact of the two journals on the social science journal literature. The impact of the two journals was also analyzed in terms of SSCI subject categories. This study could provide useful information for collection development librarians interested in the social sciences.

At the O'Reilly Tools of Change for Publishing conference in 2011 (toccon.com/toc2011), Kevin Kelly, senior maverick at Wired, discussed the future of publishing in terms of access versus ownership. He believes accessing, not owning, content is the future. As a librarian, I thought this made perfect sense--after all, that's what libraries have offered for centuries.
However, putting myself in the shoes of publishers, those who rely on sales and revenue, this sounded a bit frightening. How would an access-based future alter the publishing and book distribution industry? How, if at all, might this affect libraries?

Walk through the University of Northern Iowa’s Rod Library and you will certainly notice the changes. Entire collections have relocated, the Youth Library has been reborn, collaborative workstations are multiplying, and comfortable spaces for reflective study, collaborative research, and small group discussion are spreading throughout the building. With input from students and faculty, Rod Library is undergoing a metamorphosis. Yet only a fraction of this ongoing transformation is visible to the itinerant passerby. Changes are afoot that are redefining research and enhancing what is possible in graduate education.

Our goal in this study was to determine the likelihood that a recent graduate entering his or her first professional position or a transitioning librarian would have access to formal mentoring programs. The study suggests that, while formal mentoring is valuable, more emphasis needs to be focused on creating formal mentoring programs to make them more widely available.

Role Of Library And Information Centres In Disaster Management, Pardeep Rattan
Role Of Library And Information Centres In Disaster Management, Pardeep Rattan
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The present paper highlights the importance of library and information centres in managing a disaster or any emergency. The main thrust of the paper is to explore the possible roles that the library professionals may assume in case of disasters besides their regular or routine jobs. The concept of disaster management, types of man- made and natural disasters have also been discussed in detail. The paper discusses library professionals’ role in managing the emergencies for the local community in particular and for the library and information centres in general. Various components of information and communication technology helpful in the reduction …

The Anchor, Volume 126.16: February 27, 2013, Hope College
The Anchor: 2013
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

SURGE
I have been privileged during my lifetime to always have the opportunity to learn about something if I wanted to. When I became interested in music and psychology—or even when I was learning how to apply for college—I googled it. The resources to obtain information have always been there for me: access to computers, the internet, books, journals. It is hard to imagine my life without a computer or access to books to learn about the world, and even harder to imagine if I did not know how to read or write. For this, I can thank my education and …

Using Fun To Teach Rigorous Content, Mary Francis
Communications in Information Literacy
This paper will offer a position on the place of fun within education and learning. It will place fun as an important component of learning. The intent is not to espouse the belief that it is the duty of teachers and instructors to entertain students. Unlike a movie or TV show that provides passive entertainment, fun in this context relates to actions and techniques that aid students in learning new material. So rather than fun being associated with ease, fun is associated with rigor. In drawing together research on the successful impact of fun in education, this paper hopes to …
Student Use Of Library Research Guides Following Library Instruction, Mardi Mahaffy
Student Use Of Library Research Guides Following Library Instruction, Mardi Mahaffy
Communications in Information Literacy
Librarians often provide students who attend one-shot library instruction sessions with research guides they can refer to once class is over. These guides, whether in paper or electronic form, serve to remind the students of key points and resources addressed during the session. It is unclear, though, if and how students refer to these guides once leaving the classroom. This article reports on the results of two focus groups made up of students who attended a basic library instruction session as part of a survey art course. The students shared how they used a paper and electronic research guide, delivered …
