One of the most exciting and important conversations within the academic library community is the evolving role of the library in colleges and universities. Among the many scenarios that have been discussed in recent years, one constant is the continuing need for library personnel who can successfully provide information resources to members of the learning and research communities. What are the skills that current and future library professionals will need to be successful in the 21st century academic library? How will organizations recruit, retain and develop the people they need to remain vital? - Emily Stenberg, Digital Publishing & Preservation …

Retention and productivity levels of the existing
Retention and productivity levels of the existing workforce are an essential concern in human resource management. Employee turnover is one of the most studied topics in organisational psychology and is of interest to other professionals, including personnel researchers and managers of organisations. Employees became dissatisfied with their job because of poor condition of service and lack of motivational strategies on the part of the employer. It is against this background that this research examines the influence of job satisfaction on turnover intentions of library personnel in some public Universities in South West Nigeria. …

Good, Bad, Or Biased? Using Best Practices To Improve The Quality Of Your Survey Questions, Eleta Exline
Good, Bad, Or Biased? Using Best Practices To Improve The Quality Of Your Survey Questions, Eleta Exline
University Library Scholarship
Surveys can be an effective tool for gathering information from library users and assessing library services, yet the quality of the survey questions can make all the difference between a survey that is completed and one that is abandoned in indifference or frustration. The increased emphasis on user informed library assessment and the availability of free online survey tools combine to make the use of surveys very popular in libraries, but inexperienced survey writers are not typically aware of best practices in the social sciences for the format and syntax of survey question and response options. These widely used best …

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations
Learn how one library uses concept maps to conduct both quick and in-depth assessments of student learning. This technique evolved into a more formal assessment with pre- and post-testing for both one-shot instruction sessions and semester-long research classes. After transcribing the concepts to spreadsheets, librarians standardize the terms and map them to ACRL Information Literacy Standards for more rigorous analysis and assessment. Discover how concept maps can be easily utilized for assessment.

Library Publishing And Undergraduate Education: Strategies For Collaboration, Stephanie Davis-Kahl, Michael Seeborg, Isaac Gilman
Scholarly Publications
Library-based publishing services are increasingly common as libraries seek to provide alternatives for the dissemination of scholarly and creative work. Connecting these services to the educational mission of libraries' institutions is vital for publishing programs' success and sustainability. This panel of librarians and faculty from liberal arts colleges will discuss the educative and advocacy roles that their library publishing programs have developed, and suggest best practices for librarians wishing to implement their own publishing programs.
Isaac Gilman's slides are available via CommonKnowledge.

The Forgotten Population: Using Assessment To Uncover The Library Needs Of Graduate Students, Melissa Vetter, Tara Baillargeon, Regina Beard, Pat Berge
WashU Libraries Presentations
Graduate student library needs often differ from those of undergraduates and faculty. Focus groups at three separate institutions seek to better understand the needs of a user population whose demands are often great, but whose voices are not always heard. Presenters will highlight commonalities and differences in the findings, identify opportunities for libraries to better serve this population and suggest methods for taking what is learned about graduate student needs and translating them into action.

In early 2010, Loyola Marymount University (LMU) adopted information literacy as an Undergraduate Learning Outcome. How did this transpire? Several strategies were used by librarians to promote information literacy, including the development of effective working relationships with the Office of Assessment and the Center for Teaching Excellence. Librarians also implemented several additional “High-Impact Educational Practices.” As a result, information literacy is now a new core curriculum outcome and faculty can apply for grant money to integrate information literacy into their courses. The second half of this presentation will describe how LMU assesses information literacy for WASC accreditation. The LMU librarians …

They Not Only Can But They Should: Why Undergraduates Should Provide Basic Il Instruction, Brett B. Bodemer
Library Scholarship
Academic libraries have been slow to capitalize on the benefits of peer learning in basic information literacy instruction. This paper strongly advocates for the deployment of undergraduate session-leaders in basic instruction. Although the fundamental argument is based on the proven pedagogical advantages of peer learning, several important additional benefits are also outlined. As the few documented instances in which undergraduates have been so employed provide extremely limited evaluative data to support the premise that undergraduates can deliver solid instruction, this paper also attempts to begin filling that gap by sharing several sets of data. Generated throughout the implementation of peer-led …
