For many libraries, the Digital Repository has become the main storage center for materials created by the community they serve. Such materials can include important historical records, local newspapers, community newsletters, as well as articles, presentations, data sets, images, videos and other multimedia items. In this way, the repository takes on a central role in placing free, open access materials into the hands of the public.

While many repositories are currently managed by universities, their benefits reach beyond the walls of academia to include K-12 students as well as the public at large. Thus, all librarians are encouraged to utilize …

The Anchor: 2012

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

This paper presents the results of a study which explored the use of Flickr by cultural heritage institutions. The study examined two aspects of museums’ use of Flickr: the content of images posted by museums, and the reasons behind sharing their images to the social media site. Images were categorized by the researchers into nine classes based on their visible content, and a brief questionnaire was used to gather data about the image sharing process from museum personnel. The findings reveal that imagery of people visiting the museum and taking part in museum events predominated in the total number of …

Consequently, these librarians tend to customize their positions around what their clientele require. Indeed, data “Curation Service Models [are] driven by user requirements”. Therefore, it’s not just about the data – it’s about the people. Specifically, it’s about the different cultures of user groups and librarians and how to communicate effectively across these groups. Many people use personal mobile devices, but what are the advantages to educational and organizational use? The JMU Libraries and Educational Technologies (L&ET) faculty and staff experimented with mobile devices using a Sandbox format. From program structure and budgeting to sample group demonstrations and assessment, get a practical look at the planning necessary to implement a technology Sandbox. This results of the JMU L&ET technology Sandbox was presented at the 2012 VLA Annual Conference in the VLACRL poster session.

How the author went from “OA—Hooray” to “meh.” There are 2 kinds of “open access”: gratis vs. libre. Publishers and membership organizations disrespect gratis because it does not use CC license to convey unlimited re-use rights. Institutional repositories hold many types of materials under many different permission or license terms, and cannot automatically convey re-use rights they do not control.
