Data Curation Profiles Directory
The goal of the research in this data curation profile is to learn about the linguistic aspects of the Cheyenne language with a focus on semantics, pragmatics, and syntactic issues. The data is gathered from recordings of short stories or examples given in response to specific questions. The data management issues center around the early stages of her data. The researcher described a need for a technician who could help segment and transcribe the audio files and a need to apply metadata using morphological gloss that would make it searchable. Additionally, the data would need to be available in a …

Data Curation Profiles Directory
The project associated with this data curation profile focuses on the evaluation of corn hybrids for grain yield performance as a service for the growers. The hybrids are planted in multiple locations and data is gathered on their performance. The goal of the research is to produce reference data for the seed being tested. The data management needs relate to making the finalized data available in an annual publication and preserving final reports indefinitely.

Blogging the Library
Some new projects have happened since my last post (which was before spring break). I helped give a library tour to yet another prospective professor, and it is cool to find out what they would add to the collection if they got a job here. For instance, this one professor was more into pop music and our collection does not have much material on the subject. New professors can really transform the library in that sense, as well as online resources they recommend. I also found full scores and recordings of Bruch pieces that a former professor requested. Instead of …

The Anchor: 2012
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Data Curation Profiles Directory
The researchers interviewed for this data curation profile use data from the US Census and other federal and state government sources and process, analyze, and distribute the data on the project website in a way that makes the data more accessible and easier to use. The researchers also produce analytical reports that are also available on the website. The data management needs center around the researchers’ desire to utilize an external data repository to reduce the effort required to maintain the data on their website. The researchers would need the repository to offer similar web APIs to what they currently …

University Library Scholarship
The students in this course were developing a digital library of Native American artifacts. As a guest lecturer I discussed the concept of metadata using a hands-on exercise and gave an overview of the Dublin Core elements. While I co-presented with Sherry Vellucci, this document contains only my portion of the presentation.

Intellectual Property And Its Alternatives: Incentives, Innovation And Ideology, Michael B. Mcnally
Intellectual Property And Its Alternatives: Incentives, Innovation And Ideology, Michael B. Mcnally
Research Day (Arts & Humanities, FIMS, and Education)
This dissertation examines the ability of intellectual property (IP) and its alternatives to both facilitate and impede innovation. Over the past 30 years there has been both an expansionary IP policy regime marked by significant increases in IP protection and a flourishing of alternatives to IP as digital technologies empower end users to create and disseminate intellectual works. However, it remains unclear as to whether alternatives to IP can mitigate the problems of exclusionary IP rights while also encouraging innovation. This dissertation provides a theoretical framework for analyzing alternatives to IP focusing on the incentives structures utilized, ability to produce …

Observing Graduate Students' Use Of Library Space, Marni Harrington, Amanda Humphreys
Research Day (Arts & Humanities, FIMS, and Education)
Based on a “sweeps” study in public libraries (Given & Leckie, 2003), this observational research tracks how the physical space and resources are used in a faculty-supported graduate library. We create a snapshot of what is going on in the library at a given moment in time, and then compile the results to determine how users behave in our space. These results will inform planning for an upcoming move.

Rethinking Tradition: The Impact Of Technology & The Loss Of Serendipity On The Historical Research Process, Anabel Quan-Haase, Kim Martin
Research Day (Arts & Humanities, FIMS, and Education)
The move towards the digital humanities will see a growing interest in tools such as Ebooks. This study examines how historians perceive Ebooks and other technologies as impacting their research process. Findings indicate that historians are concerned that the digital environment reduces the possibility of chance encounters with a text. They continue to recreate the environment that encourages serendipity to occur within their field, and would readily welcome tools that facilitate this.

Special Collections and University Archives Legacy Finding Aids: All Items
This collection includes nearly 800 items donated by W.R. “Butch” Evans in summer 2011. Evans, a resident of Pinellas County, collected the artifacts, chert, pottery sherds, lithic tools, shell tools, and other items while exploring coastal areas and estuaries of Florida. He located “surface finds,” items providing evidence of pre-Columbian settlements that appeared along beaches, river beds and shorelines, and other similar areas of Florida. Out of respect for those middens and mounds remaining, Evans did not violate or desecrate historical sites while collecting these materials. This catalog represents a preliminary inventory of the materials in the W.R. “Butch” Evans …

The role of librarian as teacher is shifting as we experience changes in our institutions, in technology, and in our communities. We must identify opportunities to address these issues and shape the future of our profession. Drawing upon the experience of moving from traditional library sessions to offering credit courses integrated into the curriculum of college programs, the four facilitators will lead participants in a collaborative session to identify the challenges and opportunities of integrating librarians as teachers into the student experience. Participants should bring questions, challenges, and opportunities they are facing at their own institutions. Through group discussion and …
