Citation Creation Resources And Faculty/Student Preferences: A Report, Benjamin R. Harris, Anne Jumonville

Library Faculty Research

After reviewing the RefWorks bibliographic management software’s usage statistics in comparison to its cost, and after considering the impact of difficulties with generating accurate RefWorks bibliographies in the MLA and APA styles, a number of librarians suggested that the collection of information on Trinity students’ resource preferences and citation behaviors would be valuable. A brief survey was devised (a) to determine whether or not students and faculty continue to use RefWorks and (b) to collect information about additional resources that students and faculty may use as part of their “bibliographic behaviors.”

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Despite of much focus on professional development aimed specifically at developing teachers' technology integration skills, rigorous studies of effective PD (professional development) are lacking. Evidence is also lacking on how these skills can best be integrated with pedagogical and content knowledge to improve student learning. The purpose of this article is to present two "design-oriented" TTPD (technology-related teacher professional development) designs and investigate the designs' impact on teachers. In one TTPD (tech-only), teachers learned technology skills to create activities using online learning resources. In the other (tech+PBL), teachers learned to create PBL (problem-based learning) activities using online resources. All teachers …

Roping, Corralling And Branding Silos Of Information: Old West Techniques For A New World, Cheryl D. Walters, Randy Williams, Liz Woolcott

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

Isolated silos of information are somewhat outdated in today's fast paced, Google-ized search environment. At Utah State University Libraries, we are creating strategies for aggregating unique primary source materials form multiple institutions and creating uber-collections that preserve institutional-level branding. Modeling our efforts on Indiana University's and the American Folklore Society's OpenFolklore Initiative, we are "roping" the oral histories (and associated materials) of American Folklorists, "corralling" them with CONTENTdm and rich metadata records, and branding them with institutional logos. The digital collection Collecting Memories: Oral Histories of American Folklorists is our first such effort.

Introduction

In most establishments, the desire to achieve optimal level of productivity is very central to managerial objectives. To attain this level, management of any organisation needs to look in wards as to how best the staff's morale can be boosted through a number of incentives. Researchers have over the years looked into how best workers can be motivated and how the employees were expected to behave and conduct themselves for the purpose of organisational effectiveness and a high level of productivity. Therefore, the continued existence and functioning of an organisation according to Adebisi (2000) depends largely on the extent …

Promoting Public Outreach And Awareness For Unlv Special Collections, Tom D. Sommer

Library Faculty Presentations

Promoting public outreach and awareness for UNLV Special Collections has evolved for me for the past six years as University Archivist. It started out as an idea that quickly grew into a wonderful partnership between UNLV and the local community. I originally promoted outreach as a librarian in Oro Valley, Arizona. It was a nice way for the organization to get the word out about the new library in the neighborhood. I started by reading novels to kids in Summer Camps at the nearby middle and high schools. It was a lot of fun and I was asked to come …

Working Together: Journal Of Western Archives & Western Roundups, Tom D. Sommer

Library Faculty Presentations

The idea of a Journal of Western Archives began in the early 2000s after plans were being made for a super regional meeting in Las Vegas, NV. It was during this collaborative time that University Archivists Gordon Daines proposed an idea to then Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists President John Murphy. Gordon wanted to establish a journal that would be for archivists working in the western United States. He noticed that as a researcher himself at BYU that archivists in the western United States didn’t publish as much as archivists in the eastern United States.

In 2002, Gordon approached CIMA about …

Motivating Millenials: Improving Practices In Recruiting, Retaining, And Motivating Younger Library Staff, Quinn Galbraith, Sara D. Smith

Faculty Publications

Working with younger staff and student employees can be a challenge for library supervisors in a multigenerational workplace. Because members of the Millennial Generation have different work expectations, managers need to adjust to best meet their needs. By surveying its five hundred student employees, Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library has learned ways to avoid miscommunication due to generational differences and to better supervise and motivate student employees. The purpose of this paper is to explore the library survey results and results from other national surveys, and to share what was learned from student employees about the Millennial Generation …

Growth And Development Of Architectural Engineering College Libraries In Haryana, India, Rajender Kumar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

Architectural engineering education plays a vital role in the building community and educates future leaders in planning and design of outdoor space. Information is a key element for any kind of research and development. Libraries help accelerate knowledge, creation in collaboration with educational and research organizations. The library helps improve collections, maintains, preserves, and organizes documents, cooperates with other institutions and is a link between information sources and users (Ku, 1996). Today’s libraries focus on electronic publications to provide rapid access to information and save storage space for traditional resources (Thakur, 2003). The pillars of the development of libraries …

Image-Enabled Discourse: Investigating The Creation Of Visual Information As Communicative Practice, Jaime Snyder May 2012

Image-Enabled Discourse: Investigating The Creation Of Visual Information As Communicative Practice, Jaime Snyder

School of Information Studies - Dissertations

Anyone who has clarified a thought or prompted a response during a conversation by drawing a picture has exploited the potential of image making as an interactive tool for conveying information. Images are increasingly ubiquitous in daily communication, in large part due to advances in visually enabled information and communication technologies (ICT), such as information visualization applications, image retrieval systems and visually enabled collaborative work tools. Human abilities to use images to communicate are however far more sophisticated and nuanced than these technologies currently support. In order to learn more about the practice of image making as a specialized form …

International, National, And Local Notions Of The Public Library: An Extended Case Study In Namibia, Sarah M. Webb May 2012

International, National, And Local Notions Of The Public Library: An Extended Case Study In Namibia, Sarah M. Webb

School of Information Studies - Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of library use in a poor neighborhood in Windhoek, Namibia, to understand the diffusion of public libraries around the world. I used a sociological approach and the Extended Case Method (Burawoy, 1991; 1998). Two theories framed the research: World Society Theory (Meyer et al. 1997) and New Institutional Theory (Powell and DiMaggio, 1991). World Society Theory was developed from evidence of similarities in governmental, health and educational organizations globally that demonstrates the growth of a world culture based on a rationalistic and scientific approach to knowledge. The findings show that international notions of public libraries …

Fortifying The Pipeline: An Exploratory Study Of High School Factors Impacting The Information Literacy Of First-Year College Students, Jennifer L. Fabbi

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Information literacy—the ability "to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information” (American Library Association [ALA], 1989, para. 3)—has been widely and increasingly cited as an essential competency for college success, for the workplace, and for life (Bruce, 1997; Eisenberg, 2008; Fitzgerald, 2004; Johnston & Webber, 2003; National Leadership Council for Liberal Education and America’s Promise, 2007; Obama, 2009; Rader, 2002). Information literacy best practice and standards state that students optimally develop this skill set through immersion in the research process—often and over time—and this proposition is also supported in …

Promoting Open Access To Research In Academic Libraries, Priti Jain May 2012

Promoting Open Access To Research In Academic Libraries, Priti Jain

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

"A commitment to scholarly work carries with it a responsibility to circulate that work as widely as possible: this is the access principle. In the digital age, that responsibility includes exploring new publishing technologies and economic models to improve access to scholarly work. Wide circulation adds value to published work; it is a significant aspect of its claim to be knowledge. The right to know and the right to be known are inextricably mixed. Open Access can benefit both" (Willinsky, 2010). Increasingly, this capacity to close the gap between developed and less developed countries through access to information becomes more …

Investment Status Of Librarians In Tertiary Institutions Of Kogi State, Nigeria, Moses Adekunle Omoniwa

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

In Nigeria, governments constitute the largest employer of labour – Federal, State, and Local Governments, including their parastatals. As a result of this, the burden of paying retirement benefits appear to be too much for each succeeding government of the day – pension and gratuities have remained unpaid for years by the various levels of government.

Because of this, many workers, upon retirement have nothing to fall back upon, and therefore, languish and eventually die prematurely and in penury. In extreme cases, retirement benefits were only paid posthumously to the next-of-kin of deserving workers.

Generally, Nigerian workers/employees in public …
