Tracing The Source Of Irrigation: An Examination Of Colorado Ditch Company Collections In Archival Repositories, Patricia J. Rettig May 2012

Tracing The Source Of Irrigation: An Examination Of Colorado Ditch Company Collections In Archival Repositories, Patricia J. Rettig

Journal of Western Archives

The history of irrigation is significant in the western United States, which has now experienced over 150 years of irrigation development. When considered fully, the history of Western irrigation goes beyond agriculture and extends to engineering, economics, business, sociology, law, politics, ecology, and more. The historical understanding to be gained from any of these viewpoints depends on the preservation and accessibility of original records created by irrigators. In the West, ditch company records are the earliest and best source of irrigation history. This article examines to what extent historical records of Colorado ditch companies have been preserved in and made …

Blogging the Library

This has been a great semester as the Fortenbaugh music librarian intern. I learned a lot, and it is all invaluable information that will help me in the future, no matter what I decide to do. Most importantly, in helping other people with their research, I feel that I have gotten better at researching music materials myself, which will come in handy for 300 and 400-level music classes in the future (and grad school should I pursue that). Ebookmobile: Delivering Subject-Specific Ebooks To Your Inbox, Kathryn Lybarger May 2012

Ebookmobile: Delivering Subject-Specific Ebooks To Your Inbox, Kathryn Lybarger

Library Presentations

Today's users are overloaded by the massive amount of information available to them, even within their own library's collection. Ebooks cataloged in batches of hundreds (or thousands) make a generic new ebook shelf prohibitively large and mostly uninteresting to a subject researcher. The Ebookmobile helps researchers become aware of new ebooks in the library collection in their specific area of interest, so they can start using them immediately. Ebookmobile checks the Voyager database daily for newly cataloged ebooks and creates feeds for ranges in a classification scheme. Researchers can choose to receive a daily e-mail or subscribe to an RSS …

Boise State uses Blackboard as its main content management system. Moodle is another. But we are free to use whatever platforms we choose. I have been teaching the main online UNIV 106 course since 2005. Since then it has evolved from a single, paper-based course into a hybrid of courses taught by several librarians. UNIV 106 is offered several times during the school year and delivered in a variety of formats: some are offered online, some in person; some are paired with English 102 courses (known as PoWeR: Project Writing and Research); and others are offered based on subject-specific areas …

The Course Guide: Creating A Culinary Masterpiece “To Go”, Judith M. Arnold, Veronica E. Bielat

Library Scholarly Publications

Librarians operate in a multimodal environment, where Web 2.0 applications allow us to easily create multimedia materials for students, yet course guides frequently follow the print pathfinder model of merely listing resources. In this interactive workshop, attendees will "cook up a recipe" to transform online course guides into dynamic 24/7 learning tools. Following discussion on best practices for visual design, review of course resource materials, and assignment analysis, we will apply design and pedagogical principles to create a framework, using the LibGuides model, for a dynamic course-specific guide that enhances learning as it supports the goals of a specific assignment.

Is It Already May?, Molly Troy

Blogging the Library

Last week of classes and one week of exams—the semester is slowly winding down, and soon, if the weather cooperates, summer will be here. In the meantime, for most of us on campus it’s time to buckle down and do the work we’ve all been procrastinating on. That said, I imagine the library is excited for the semi-annual craziness that is exam week. Thankfully, as in past semesters, the library will be offering students a chance to chill out with the library. This “chill” study break will include “chilly” ice cream, snacks, board games, and possibly even Christmas lights! [ …

Every year we use assessment to bake a better batch of library instruction for freshman English students. This presentation addresses the universal challenge that many instruction librarians face, “How can we assess student learning outcomes in a one-shot instruction session?” LMU’s Reference Department created a standardized introduction to the research process which could apply to any topic, developed learning objectives, and measured them for the three years. The presenter will highlight assessment successes and what went back to the Test Kitchen. Our assessment buffet consists of a variety of sweet dishes: a worksheet and grading rubric, interactive online LibGuide, keyword …

Student Engagement And Library Use: An Examination Of Attitudes Towards Use Of Libraries And Information Amongst Undergraduate Students At A Turkish University Library, Gulcin Cribb, Ilkay Holt

Research Collection Library

The competitive environment in which university libraries operate and provide their services and resources is one of the biggest challenges to engage today’s undergraduate students. There is a limited amount of high quality attention and time students have, to be able to be engaged with what the library offers them. Planning and designing library awareness and information literacy programs, particularly for new students, has presented itself as an on-going challenge for librarians worldwide in recent times. However, the goalpost keeps on moving and the players are becoming more restless, demanding and seeking instant gratification. The purpose of this paper is …

A Temporal Model Of Mindful Interactions Around New Service Conception, Joe Rubleske May 2012

A Temporal Model Of Mindful Interactions Around New Service Conception, Joe Rubleske

School of Information Studies - Dissertations

The organizational ability to innovate is widely acknowledged as crucial to sustained success. For libraries and other service providers, innovation entails the continuous development of new services that propose value to customers. This new service development process can be understood as comprising a "front end," in which new service ideas are conceived and developed, and a "back end," in which selected ideas are implemented. Our understanding of the former - that is, of new service conception in libraries - is particularly underdeveloped.

To build a conceptual foundation for research in this area I used qualitative data collection techniques and constant-comparison …

Crowdsourcing Scientific Work: A Comparative Study Of Technologies, Processes, And Outcomes In Citizen Science, Andrea Wiggins

School of Information Studies - Dissertations

Citizen science projects involve the public with scientists in collaborative research. Information and communication technologies for citizen science can enable massive virtual collaborations based on voluntary contributions by diverse participants. As the popularity of citizen science increases, scientists need a more thorough understanding of how project design and implementation decisions affect scientific outcomes.

Applying a comparative case study methodology, the study investigated project organizers' perspectives and experiences in Mountain Watch, the Great Sunflower Project, and eBird, three observation-based ecological citizen science projects in different scientific domains. Five themes are highlighted in the findings: the influence of project design approaches that …
