The convergence of college students' information needs, social characteristics, and technological skills have always defined academic library services. Academic libraries re-shape and expand library services in order to match college students with their preferred mode of communication at their point-of-need. This is especially evident in the current offerings of multiple mediums for research help and mobile-friendly web sites. As Rettig pointed out in 2003, college students' familiarity and confidence with information technology has created expectations of immediacy, interactivity, personalization, and mobility.
Chat reference and text messaging reference services present efficient, personalized methods for connecting with college students. Text messaging, also …

The University Press Content Consortium (UPCC) has collaborated with Project MUSE to host over 15,000 e-books on the MUSE platform. This database was launched on January 1, 2012, and is fully integrated with MUSE’s content from 500 journals in the humanities and social sciences to form a seamlessly searchable database of books and articles that provides scholarly content from 192 university presses and learned societies at a very affordable price. Carnegie Tier 4 & 5 universities may receive an additional 20% and 40% discount respectively if a purchase contract is signed by Aug. 31, 2012. As has always been the …

In March 2011, Special Collections and Archives (SCA) at Towson University launched a departmental Facebook page in conjunction with a modest redesign of our webpages. Housed in the Albert S. Cook Library, SCA was established in 1970 and primarily contains records of the university that date back to its opening in January 1866 as the Maryland State Normal School. Because our webpages are relatively static and part of the library’s website, Facebook is used as a storefront, if you will, for communicating dynamic and engaging content.

How Well Do Ontario Library Web Sites Meet New Accessibility Requirements?, Joanne Oud
Library Publications
New changes to Ontario law will require library web sites to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.0 (WCAG 2.0). This study evaluates 64 Ontario university, college, and public library web sites to see how well they comply with WCAG 2.0 guidelines at present. An average of 14.75 accessibility problems were found per web page. The most common problems included invalid html, poor color contrast, incorrect form controls and labels, missing alt text, bad link text, improper use of headings, using html to format pages, using absolute units of measure, and issues with tables and embedded objects.

Bawden and Robinson’s the latest textbook is a pleasure to read because they depict historic dimensions, philosophical paradigms, basic concepts, theoretical domains, and substantive aspects of information science (s) with such clarity and precision. The key readings and references provided in each chapter, including additional resources at the final section of this book, are noteworthy for delving into further information on the basis of personal interests. Bawden and Robinson’s “Introduction to Information Science” is different from the others in the market because of its emphasis. Be Your Own Architect: Manage Renovation Projects Internally - Part Ii, Eric C. Shoaf
Publications
Larger library building projects usually require an architect to manage design and construction, but these days many libraries find that the results of space planning often are implemented in smaller less-expensive pieces rather than a single large project. Many of these projects involve repurposing space freed from shelving or other uses, where the total of the project is to remove the shelves and
place new furniture. Further, many have realized that architects and engineers
are expensive, and when it comes to renovating an open space, it may be
possible to use internal library staff to complete the project. Here are …

Comparative User Experiences Of Next-Generation Catalogue Interfaces, Rice Majors
Comparative User Experiences Of Next-Generation Catalogue Interfaces, Rice Majors
Staff publications, research, and presentations
One of the presumed advantages of next-generation library catalogue interfaces is that the user experience is improved—that it is both richer and more intuitive. Often the interfaces come with little or no user-facing documentation or imbedded “help” for patrons based on an assumption of ease of use and familiarity of the experience, having followed best practices in use on the Web. While there has been much gray literature (published on library Web sites, etc.) interrogating these implicit claims and contrasting the new interfaces to traditional Web-based catalogues, this article details a consistent and formal comparison of whether users can actually …

Announcement: The Indians Of The Northern And Southern Districts Of North America: Levenshtein Comparisons Of The Tribe Lists From The 1764 ‘Plan For The Future Management Of Indian Affairs.’, Charles D. Bernholz, Brian T. O'Grady
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
The Northern and Southern Districts of the British government in America contained tribes of Indians that were specifically enumerated prior to the preparation of the 1764 Plan for the future management of Indian affairs. That Board of Trade policy reassigned the responsibility for Indian affairs to the imperial government, rather than leaving it to be mediated by the individual colonies. Fourteen variants of those lists, from official and public sources, were compared with Levenshtein’s edit distance algorithm to assess similarity and provenance. Table I and Table II (Excel spreadsheets) are attached (below).

Trailblazers: Moving The Library Upstream In The Digital Distribution Process, Sue Polanka
University Libraries' Staff Publications
On Dec. 20, 2010, Jamie LaRue, director of Douglas County Libraries (DCL), asked his associate director of Information technology, Monique Sendze, "Suppose a patron walked in and wanted to donate an ebook to our library. Could they?" Sendze responded, "No, I don't think so." "So, what do we have to do to be able to accept a book?" wondered LaRue. Sendze said she would find out.
It took 18 months and $100,000, but they found the answer together-locally hosting ebook content. LaRue, Sendze, and the DCL staff set out on a mission. A mission to own, not lease, electronic books. …

In 2011, the Ogeechee Technical College Library became the first technical college library in the country to convert to OCLC's World Share Management Services to streamline acqusitions, cataloging, and interlibrary loan, while increasing user discovery, access, and use of the library's print and online resources.
