Supporting Alternative Incentive Mechanisms For Digital Content: A Comparison Of Canadian And Us Policy, Michael B. Mcnally Jun 2011

Supporting Alternative Incentive Mechanisms For Digital Content: A Comparison Of Canadian And Us Policy, Michael B. Mcnally

FIMS Publications

This paper compares the Government of Canada’s copyright focused approach for encouraging the production of digital content with the U.S. Government’s adoption of a range of incentive systems for the production of content through a content analysis of government policy papers. The first part of the paper examines Canadian policy outlined in the Improving Canada’s Digital Advantage consultation paper and the proposed amendments to the Copyright Act (Bill C-32). The paper argues the government is overly reliant on copyright to encourage the production of creative digital content. Though Bill C-32 would expand the definition of fair dealing and create a …

At Albertsons Library, User-Centered Is More Than A Trendy Phrase, Peggy S. Cooper

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

At Albertsons Library being user-centered is at the heart of our decision-making. We focus our collective staff energy on what our users want and need. How do we know? We ask them. In focus groups, in LibQual surveys, at the reference desk, and in course evaluations -- we ask, we listen and we act on their requests.

Google Like A Librarian: Sharing Skills For Search Success, Mary K. O'Kelly, Colleen Lyon Jun 2011

Google Like A Librarian: Sharing Skills For Search Success, Mary K. O'Kelly, Colleen Lyon

Scholarly Papers and Articles

The workshop announcement started simply enough: “Your students are using
it. You are using it. Why not get the most out of Google tools?” The workshop, called “Using Google Like a Librarian,” was for faculty and staff at Grand Valley State University. Over the past two years, librarians have been teaming up with instructional technology staff to create on-campus professional development opportunities, and this was going to be (we thought) just another workshop. And then it got popular.

Addressing Abet Program Outcome 'I': A First-Year Engineering Program And Library Instruction Initiative Collaboration, Debbie Morrow Jun 2011

Addressing Abet Program Outcome 'I': A First-Year Engineering Program And Library Instruction Initiative Collaboration, Debbie Morrow

Presentations

Grand Valley's School of Engineering recently invited the University Libraries to collaborate in an effort to address ABET outcome ‘i’, engaging in lifelong learning, in one of their first year core courses. The Libraries have recently developed an "Information Literacy Core Competencies" document, evolving out of the ACRL IL competencies standard adopted in 2000. Our collaboration has so far been a great exercise in exploring the effective intersection of ABET ‘i’ and information literacy competencies, in the context of incorporation into an existing course in GVSU's first-year engineering curriculum.

Research For The Greater Good: Incorporating Service Learning In An Information Literacy Course At Wright State University, Maureen Barry Jun 2011

Research For The Greater Good: Incorporating Service Learning In An Information Literacy Course At Wright State University, Maureen Barry

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Like many librarians who teach a for-credit information literacy course, I often struggled to engage students meaningfully. My students seemed to lack any real connection to the curriculum and so were often unmotivated and difficult to teach.

One day, while talking to a faculty member who teaches service learning (SL) courses, I saw an opportunity to incorporate an SL component into my course. My class would require students to provide research to a local nonprofit agency. The class assignments would allow my students to develop real-world connections to the community and the curriculum. I hoped it would engage them more …

The study uses performance in the assessment task, student feedback drawn from survey questionnaires and a …

Xerxes is an interface application, used by over 40 institutions around the world (see http://code.google.com/p/xerxes-portal/wiki/Implementations) including several UW System Libraries. For these UW System Libraries, Xerxes serves as the user interface to MetaLib and also provides sophisticated citation management functionality and integration options. It's developed by libraries for libraries, and therefore designed to be completely customizable. One of the more challenges aspects of the Xerxes implementation is determining logical subject headings. The experiences of UW-Eau Claire, UW Colleges, and UW-Madison will be discussed.
