A Cautious Partnership: The Growing Acceptance Of Folksonomy As A Complement To Indexing Digital Images And Catalogs, Eric Willey

As archives and museums place their photographic collections on the Web, the cost and time of indexing and assigning metadata to these images grows. One potential solution is to allow users to assign metadata to images, a practice known as folksonomy. While detractors label folksonomy as imprecise, sloppy, and overly focused on the needs of individual users, proponents applaud it as being directly tied to users' vocabularies, inexpensive, and a means of directly engaging users. Suggestions for improvements to folksonomy include providing more structure to the tags users can supply, allowing feedback on user supplied tags, and even turning the …

Institutional repositories are a relatively new activity for higher education. They are defined most often as a set of services that are offered by an institution for the management and dissemination of digital materials created by the members of the institution or scholarly community. This article will describe the challenges institutions are facing in creating repositories, will explore the economics of managing repositories, and will offer a model for creating a successful set of services.

For over a decade library literature has championed the benefits of open access institutional repositories. Many academic librarians and library administrators agree upon the idea of an open access institutional repository and have invested in running a repository. The open access movement has begun to change the landscape of research and scholarly publishing through mandates and shifting publisher policies. Despite these advances, repository content growth has been slow in North America.

Wayne State University’s repository—Digital Commons—has existed since 2005 but experienced similarly slow growth. In late 2008, Wayne State addressed this issue with the creation of an actionable roadmap that …

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

From the mid-1980s through the mid-2000s, Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library's collection of films, slides, audio and video tapes, and other similar "audiovisual" materials grew to over 1,000 items. After an assessment of the A/V collection, it was determined that the videocassette tapes (VHS) could be converted to or purchased in DVD format. This poster explains the background, process, results, and conclusions of how the VHS-to-DVD conversion and replacement project was implemented.

Spurred by the growing adoption of electronic health records, librarians developed an online educational module for second year medical students which was integrated into existing curriculum. This poster presentation is a summary of the project, which required collaboration with staff from the faculty practice group's IT division, the library's web services division, and members of the reference department.

Librarians of Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library are now participating in a joint program of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) and the Graduate School of Education and Human Development of the George Washington University. The program, called the Master Teacher Leadership and Development Program (MTLDP), has increased library visibility and an expanded faculty understanding of how library resources and services can enhance education. This poster presentation is a general outline of the program's benefits to the library.

This poster presentation is a detailed description of the background, process, promotion, results, and conclusions of an academic library community service project. The "Food for Fines" program, implemented at Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library was designed to encourage the collection of fines for overdue items. One non-perishable food item was accepted for every $1.00 in overdue fines, to a maximum of $20.00. These food items were donated to a local food bank in the Washington, DC, area.

Building A Digital Archive: The William & Mary Law School Scholarship Repository, Lauren Seney

In July of 2010 the William & Mary Law School broke ground on a digital repository. Six months later, we boasted more than 5,000 items across eleven collections. While this pace could not be maintained when the existing digital content was exhausted, it created a template for expanding the repository beyond our initial goals.

It’s no secret that free websites give away content sold by high-cost subscription databases, but you might not know how useful free sites are. If you think there’s always a trade-off between cost and quality, think again. Some free resources for Virginia legal research are as good as—or better than—subscription sites. And some free resources aren’t quite as good as what you can buy, but are an option.

The GVSU University Libraries has responded in the last five years to internal and external emphases on assessing student learning outcomes and our contributions to student learning. We’ve conducted a higher-level information literacy assessment, and have made a priority of developing information literacy tools for use by classroom faculty. We have twice administered SAILS, the "Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills," to provide us with a broad benchmark measure of student IL skills against a cohort of our institutional peers. Years ago, in the late 90’s when we had an official reference desk and students ambled their way into the library to ask for research assistance I thought it would be a good proactive idea to take the reference desk to students on their home turf in their residence hall, dining area and socializing entities. I thought, “ What better way to burst the illusion bubble that academic librarians were unhelpful, grouchy and untouchable.”

Visualizing History: Using Museum Skills To Teach Information Literacy To Undergraduates, Sandra Roff

Baruch College began an information studies minor that reinforces the principles of information literacy. However, it did not employ the visual to teach information literacy skills. To fill this gap, a new course, using the process of researching and preparing an exhibit script to teach undergraduates information literacy skills, was developed. In this course students have the opportunity to become creative, while at the same time learning the organizational and research skills needed to compose exhibit proposals, write labels and press releases and finally to produce exhibit script.

Chatbots In The Library: Is It Time?, Deeann Allison

This paper describes a pilot at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for a chatbot that answers questions about the library and library resources. The chatbot was developed using a SQL database to store the question and answers using Artificial Intelligence Mark-up Language metadata. The user interface was built using PHP, adapted from Program-O. The open source PHP program was modified to support better display and the launching of URLs within the chatbot screen. Database content was created by “mining” library websites for information, and analyzing chat logs.
