In this article, we will examine one collaborative Oregon preservation effort that we believe is both enlightening and instructive for the example that it provides and for the direction that similar efforts may take in the future. The initiative that we have chosen to examine is that of the Disaster Recovery Group (DiRG) established by the Portland Area Library System (PORTALS). PORTALS was a library consortium founded in 1993 to meet the research and educational needs of libraries in the greater Portland area through cooperative and creative access to information resources and services. In the past, systems that present digitized archival materials were often created with limited knowledge of their audiences’ needs and greater focus on the materials. Organizations must ask whether digital delivery systems are sufficiently effective to merit financial support. As part of the planning process for a digital delivery system at the Orbis Cascade Alliance, the Northwest Digital Archives (NWDA) consortium conducted a study of its core researchers’ needs for the selection and presentation of archival materials online. Should Chat Reference Be Staffed By Librarians? An Assessment Of Chat Reference At An Academic Library Using Libstats, Patricia Bravender, Colleen Lyon, Anthony Molaro

Scholarly Papers and Articles

This study analyzes 1,557 chat reference questions received at Grand Valley State University Libraries over four semesters to determine the quantity and nature of the questions. Results indicated that use of chat reference was low and that less than a quarter of chat questions required a librarian to answer. The cost of a librarian answering a chat question ranged from $37 to $439 per question. The findings suggest that assigning chat reference to trained reference assistants will not affect patron service and that it is not cost effective to use reference librarians to answer chat questions.

Wise and careful selection of materials remains among the most important and enduring duties of the librarian. However, once one moves beyond general principles learned in library school, one quickly learns that real collection development is difficult and time-consuming. This is especially true in a specialized subject library, where traditional collection development methods do not always yield good results. The author discusses experience in developing a specialized collection in hospitality management materials, but the tips in this article will appeal to a wide variety of librarians seeking to build a specialized, subject-specific collection.

New York University's Data Service Studio has recently launched the NYU Survey Service, whose ultimate aim is to support the development and administration of surveys of all types. For the web-based component, we utilize a product called Qualtrics, which allows university affiliates to develop and administer web-based surveys. This article describes the process by which we at NYU came to offer the service during a time when concerns abound about the ability of libraries to support and expand services while still meeting service imperatives such as robust data services. In the fall of 2010, two well-known liberal arts institutions, Drexel University in Philadelphia and Wesleyan University of Middletown, Connecticut, began programs that provided “personal librarians” for incoming freshmen. This apparently new idea received some notice in higher education news feeds, and was even featured in Library Journal’s Newsletter.

The new cataloguing guidelines Resource Description and Access (RDA) have recently been released and are set to replace the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. An evaluation period led by the Library of Congress is currently underway and it is likely that the implementation of RDA will begin sometime in mid- 2011. This paper looks briefly at the origins of RDA, provides a high level overview of RDA and reviews some of the major differences that cataloguers and library users can expect to find between RDA and AACR2.

The Thomas G. Carpenter Library works with a model of Reference service that is fairly traditional in most senses. The Reference Desk is staffed with a combination of professional librarians and para-professionals a set number of hours per week. When the current library facility was planned, the emphasis was on making more and more computers available to library patrons and to place staff near the computers in order to facilitate service provision. That resulted in a large lab of 129 workstations with a student assistant desk nearby and a smaller lab of 40 workstations with the reference/documents service desk nearby. …

Course-Integrated Information Literacy Instruction In Introduction To Accounting, Anne Kelly, Teresa Williams, Brad Matthies, J. Burdeane Orris

Foley Library Scholarship

Two groups of students, enrolled in Introduction to Accounting, volunteered to participate in a pedagogical study to assess course-integrated information literacy instruction. Only one group had received information literacy instruction in an earlier business course. Academic librarians provided three instruction sessions, and students completed a semester-long case to evaluate a company as a potential investment. The results suggest that information literacy skills can be learned for application in subsequent coursework. This research also provides some evidence of significantly greater improvement in information literacy and significantly higher perceptions of course-integrated instruction benefits by students who had not received the previous instruction.

This paper compares implementing the VuFind “nextgeneration catalog” and SerialsSolutions®’ Summon™ “Web-scale discovery service” at an academic library. Different though complementary, and both positively disruptive, these systems each offer easier searching for users through leveraging metadata. The paper discusses aspects of each implementation including purpose, function, architecture and development model, faceted interface, metadata management and interoperability, governance and project management, and differing perceptions and feedback from librarians and users.

Librarians, and particularly academic librarians, deal with copyright issues on almost a daily basis. It makes sense, therefore, that libraries and librarians should be the “go to” place on campus for copyright information. I am often asked by colleagues for suggestions on launching copyright education programs on their campuses. In this column, I provide steps and ideas to help you get started with a copyright education program, or at least to make you feel more confident in your efforts by providing advice from my own experiences, from educating yourself to implementing local workshops.

Levy, MD papers is limited to selected papers that were donated by Dr. Levy's daughter Justine (Levy) Bennett to the Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center Library in 1982, including a selection of letters, original copies of two articles, one on the treatment of Bubonic Plague in Galveston, TX circa 1920, one on the use of Tartar Emetic as a cure for Malaria circa 1917, and a plaque from 1957 that commemorates Dr. Levy's time as president of the Harris County Medical Society. With the emergence of new media and technology, the concept of books has expanded to include information of all types and in multiple formats: eBooks, DVDs, videogames, electronic databases, et cetera. Meanwhile, the idea of community has stayed the same. For example, public libraries primarily serve communities defined by geographic lines; academic libraries serve their campus communities. As dystopian literature grows in popularity, teacher librarians many not fully understand the themes found within this new subgenre. The purpose of this research was to describe the themes in positively reviewed dystopian literature for young adults. Themes found during the research included: resilience of the protagonist, survival, government control, social conformity, and love between the protagonist and another young adult. Novels from 2001-2010 were analyzed for themes and lessons for young adults. Thirteen positively reviewed novels were chosen, read, and coded by the researcher. According to faculty interviews, entering college freshmen frequently did not exhibit consistent knowledge of information literacy skills needed to be successful. Schools have increasingly used models of team teaching between librarians and professors to ensure students have information literacy skills. The purpose of this study was to explore the expectations and deficiencies in information literacy skills of entering college freshmen. The purpose of this qualitative content analysis was to identify themes found in children's quilt picture books that could connect to the Iowa Core Curriculum Social Studies Standards. Elementary teachers could utilize the quilt picture books to teach the elementary social studies curriculum. This researcher analyzed 15 quilt picture books with a copyright of 1994 and newer that were in the Wilson Children's Core Collection. The themes that emerged from the content analysis of children's quilt picture books were generosity, slavery, multicultural, generational, and westward expansion.
