Academic libraries are looking for ways to stay relevant to the Millennial/Internetgeneration. At the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Criss Library, we are conducting a pilot study on mobile computing to provide people to people (p2p) reference services. We will use smart phones and iPhones to interact with students who need information assistance. The study's objectives are the following: 1. As initiatives to achieve a more interactive web-format for government information expand, concerns continue to mount over data security and preservation. While efforts to address these issues are ongoing at the federal level, at the state and local levels there continues to be gaps between state and local agencies creating digital publications and services and ensuring the long-term preservation of those publications. Millions of students visit academic libraries each year, hoping to achieve success in the classroom and make progress with their research. Many of these students need help in navigating the complex services, collections, and facilities of a large academic library. Librarians often respond to this need by offering in-person orientation tours. However, with this approach, library personnel are unable to reach all who need assistance. Furthermore, the schedules of busy students and busy librarians do not always coincide, and students may prefer to learn about the library in a more flexible, self-paced fashion. For three years following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, residents of the Gulf Coast enjoyed a reprieve from serious threats. But in 2008 Hurricanes Gustav and Ike confirmed that massive evacuations are now a reality of hurricane season. A consequence of such large evacuations is the establishment of hundreds of shelters across the country. Opportunities exist to improve information assistance and information dissemination in hurricane shelters. Information professionals can help by conducting research and documenting their experiences in shelters. This article discusses observations of evacuees’ information needs at a Hurricane Gustav shelter in Knoxville, Tennessee, and details the resources and methods …

Purpose: This paper addresses a gap in the analysis of the dynamic and challenging relationship between libraries, Web 2.0 and young adults, suggesting the relevance of a critical approach.

Methodology/Approach: This paper represents an exploratory literature review with the objective of identifying a possible gap in the way the LIS community is addressing the concept of Web 2.0.

Findings: Findings indicate that the research produced in other fields, such as Communication or Computer Science; the way young adults interrelate with new technologies; and the need for collaboration between practitioners and researchers justify and support the use of a critical perspective …

Over the last four decades, electronic games have profoundly changed the way people play, learn, and connect with each other. Despite the tremendous impact of electronic games, however, until recently, relatively few programs existed to preserve them for future generations of players and researchers. Recognizing the need to save the original content and intellectual property of electronic games from media rot, obsolescence, and loss, the Game Preservation Special Interest Group of the International Game Developers Association has issued a white paper summarizing why electronic games should be preserved, problems that must be solved to do so, some potential solutions, and …

It Takes A Village To Support A Library, Peter D. Pearson

The author explains how friends of library groups and organizations can support a library. It points out the significance of political advocacy, particularly the role of the friends of library groups in promoting the importance of a public library. It encourages the holding of private fundraising combined with advocacy for the benefit of the library and taking into consideration the capabilities of its board of directors and moving beyond just membership contributions. Also proposed is the use of a merged model of a library friends group and foundation.

American Recovery And Reinvestment Act For Georgia Libraries, Diana J. Very

The article reports on the coordination of the statewide application of Georgia for funding of public computer centers for libraries under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA). The funding will be made possible by the NTIA Broadband Opportunities Program. Among the library systems that filed application include Athens Regional, Atlanta-Fulton County and DeKalb County Partnership, and South Georgia Regional.

Atlanta Emerging Librarians Encouraging Distance Education, Ashley Dupuy

The article reports on the efforts of the Atlanta Emerging Librarians in encouraging students and new librarians to participate in distance education programs in library science. Programs were promoted by the group through library school electronic mailing lists and the membership of the Georgia Library Association. The group conducted a program on library user instruction in March 2009 featuring librarians as speakers, including Anne Wallace and Casey Long. One of the popular programs during the event was "Meet With the Admins."

“A Space For Myself To Go:” Early Patterns In Small Ya Spaces, Anthony Bernier

While young adults (teenagers) are routinely recognized as constituting nearly 25 percent of the nation's public library users, the vast majority of libraries devote more space and design attention to restrooms than to young people. Worse, there are currently no consistent or established metrics, no evaluation criteria, few conceptual standards of best practices, and little consistency in the methods by which we collect empirical evidence about young adult (YA) spaces. This study is the first systematic attempt to both collect and analyze empirical data on libraries' recent trend toward providing greater spatial equity for YA library service.

The charge of the RUSA Sharing and Transforming Access to Resources Section (STARS) International Interlibrary Loan Committee is to evaluate trends in international interlibrary loan (ILL) and resource sharing, to develop materials and resources for international ILL practitioners, and to promote international ILL resource sharing efforts. In 2006, the committee decided to survey U.S. libraries regarding their international ILL activities as a way to gather information on the current environment and identify strategies for improving international ILL.
