The Dawn Of The "Chaotic Account": Horatio Hale’S Australia Notebook And The Development Of Anthropologists’ Field Notes, Tom Belton

This paper proposes an archival analysis of notebooks, and their relationships to other parts of personal archives (e.g. journals or diaries). The bulk of the paper is an analysis of the historical development of a particular genre of notebooks: anthropological field notes, “chaotic accounts”, as Branislaw Manilnowski called them, based largely on observation. It provides a review of anthropologists’ own recent literature on the subject, and a short case study of a mid nineteenth century notebook of the American explorer/ethnographer Horatio Hale that serves as an example of one seed out of which anthropological field notes grew.

Information Literacy And Research-Intensive Graduate Students: Enhancing The Role Of Research Librarians, Marni R. Harrington

This article investigates how psychology graduate students find information for coursework and research, who teaches them how to find it, and whether differences emerge over the course of their graduate careers. Findings indicate that these graduate students are comfortable using campus libraries, prefer electronic resources, ask supervisors when they need assistance locating information, and have some interest in furthering their information literacy knowledge. Finally, the master’s students use different information management skills than do the PhD students, as evidenced by the use of bibliographic management software. Measuring Quality In Chat Reference Consortia: A Comparative Analysis Of Responses To Users’ Queries, Deborah L. Meert, Lisa M. Given

Academic libraries have experienced growing demand for 24/7 access
to resources and services. Despite the challenges and costs of chat
reference service and consortia, many libraries are finding the demand
for these services worth the cost. One key challenge is providing and
measuring quality of service, particularly in a consortia setting. This study
explores the quality of service provided in one academic library participating
in a 24/7 chat reference consortium, by assessing transcripts of
chat sessions using in-house reference quality standards. Findings point
to both similarities and differences between chat interactions of local
librarians versus consortia staff.

Keyword Enhanced Web Structure Mining For Business Intelligence, L. Vaughan, J. You

The study proposed the method of keyword enhanced Web structure mining which combines the ideas of Web content mining with Web structure mining. The method was used to mine data on business competition among a group of DSLAM companies. Specifically, the keyword DSLAM was incorporated into queries that searched for co-links between pairs of company Websites. The resulting co-link matrix was analyzed using multidimensional scaling (MDS) to map business competition positions. The study shows that the proposed method improves upon the previous method of Web structure mining alone by producing a more accurate map of business competition in the DSLAM …

Exploring The Placelessness Of Reading Among Older Teens In A Canadian Rural Municipality, Paulette Rothbauer

Situated in a review of rural, cultural, and youth geographies, this article reports on a qualitative study of the role of reading and libraries in the lives of older rural teenagers. The primary method of data collection was the use of in‐depth, flexibly structured interviews with twenty‐seven youth between the ages of fifteen and nineteen years, supplemented with data from unobtrusive observation and environmental scanning in a specific geographic locale. Four themes are discussed: the habitual, quotidian reading of teenagers; the shifting visibility of the public library; the Internet and the World Wide Web as a default reading site; and …

Differing from those of their Liberal Arts and ARL counterparts, today’s Comprehensive Universities face a variety of unique challenges and opportunities when it comes to assessing their collections. This paper looks at the different needs and interests of comprehensive universities and will focus on the challenges faced in evaluating collections in three distinct university library settings. Case studies from individual universities will be used to examine issues regarding different means of assessing electronic book collections, collection development policies, and library databases.

Academic libraries recognize that outreach is best undertaken as soon as students arrive on campus for their first year. Librarians have designed creative methods for engaging incoming students with the resources and services provided by the campus library. Such outreach is increasingly important as prior experience using library resources and services among incoming first-year students decreases. This paper reviews the rationale for employing several methods of outreach to first-year students and provides examples of creative means for doing so implemented successfully at American colleges and universities. Patron-Driven Acquisition (PDA) is an e-book business model introduced by NetLibrary almost 10 years ago. The model was slow to develop over the years but has experienced a resurgence with programs from NetLibrary, Ingram Digital, and EBL. PDA stems from two traditional collection development principles—purchasing titles based on patron suggestions and establishing approval plans. The primary differences are that PDA is a business model strictly for e-books, and final selections are made by the patrons.

Mixing And Matching: Assessing Information Literacy, Carol Mcculley

Authentic assessment of student learning outcomes is much in demand. This paper reviews a variety of assessment methods that measure cognitive, behavioral, and affective levels of learning that can be used to design library class instruction and assessments to improve student learning and teaching of information literacy concepts. The intentional use of these methods to assess undergraduate student learning in many disciplines through working collaboratively with faculty and integrating the assessments in a learner-centered environment is discussed.

Undergraduates attending The George Washington University are required to take courses in the University Writing Program. When it was introduced in 2004, this innovative program institutionalized collaboration between librarians and writing professors. The program was designed to support the university’s strategic goal to enhance challenge, discovery, and quality in student education. Beginning in 2005, instruction librarians crafted a survey to elicit anonymous feedback from their faculty partners to measure the impact of the library partnership on student learning. The survey is administered annually to explore faculty perceptions and monitor trends. Responses to the survey identify significant strengths resulting from this …

A Case Study Of A Rural Iowa School Preparing To Meet New State Guidelines For School Libraries, Karla Steege Krueger

A qualitative case study highlighting one rural Iowa elementary school provided insight into the issue of small schools without library programs as they are preparing to meet the Iowa reinstatement of the requirement for school library programs. The site was purposefully chosen because it has been operating without a school library program or professional teacher-librarian district-wide. All eight teachers and the nonendorsed library associate from one elementary school participated in either a focus group or semistructured interviews.
