The Anchor: 2009

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Besides web resources that are visible to traditional search engines such as Google or Bing, there are a large portion of the web that is invisible to them. For example, the Purdue Library has access to more than 400 databases. Most of them contain documents that are not reachable by traditional web crawlers due to security, technical limitations or copyright agreement. The only way to search and retrieve documents from those databases is through their service interfaces, which implement different methods of indexing and searching. A failure to adapt to and adopt new and changing technology caused the music industry to crash, a fate that the information industry currently faces. This proposal is an overview of the music industry's crash, as a result of changing technology, and the lessons that the information industry can learn from the music industry's mistakes in order to avoid its own crash now that technology allows for quicker, easier, and cheaper publication. Current integrated library systems traditionally combine both user discovery and inventory management applications, merging very different functional needs into a single environment. As libraries look to the future, our service platforms must evolve in a way that enables both more efficient management and more effective presentation of a wide array of library resources. For many libraries, the first step in the process has been to decouple the user discovery and delivery environment, separating the needs for patron presentation from the requirements for back-office management. Institutional archives have always provided a sense of history and unity for most universities. This is especially emphasized for the K-State at Salina photographic collection. The school has gone through four different name changes in the last fifty years and the library has amassed an ove1whelming assortment of photographs documenting various events on campus, from groundbreaking ceremonies to student social occasions. This paper analyzes the available evidence to develop a model of the archetypal academic librarian. It compares three periods to do so: (1) pre-Alexandrian Mesopotamian information institutions, focusing on the seventh century BCE Library of Assurbanipal (considered by many scholars to be the first universal or national library), (2) the Great Library of Alexandria (hereafter referred to as “the Library”), and (3) the twenty-first century American academic library. Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), Charles Ammi Cutter's Expansive Classification (EC), The Subject Classification (SC) of James Duff Brown, Library of Congress Classification (LCC), Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), Henry E. In an era of consistently poor funding for materials budgets, libraries must work to identify the most cost-effective solutions for providing access to information needed by patrons. Consortia play an important role in these solutions for many libraries and can help leverage their buying power to provide widespread access to various publishers’ content at more affordable costs. The CARLI consortium in Illinois formed a Statewide Serials Collection Task Force in 2006 to “investigate various collaborative options related to print and electronic serials collections across the state.” As part of this group's work, the Worldcat Collection Analysis tool, commonly employed for …

This study examined the management of change in cataloguing practices in Covenant University and University of Lagos , Nigeria. Thirty-five respondents who were current cataloguers and those who had worked as cataloguers were purposively sampled for the study. A descriptive survey method using a self-constructed questionnaire was used. Results showed that there have been major changes in cataloguing practices among cataloguers in these institutions over the years (online cataloguing, cataloguing of internet & electronic files, copy-cataloguing, different metadata structures, introduction of OPAC etc). It describes how the U.S. and other countries formulate and implement strategies for conducting military operations and publishing literature describing how they conduct military operations. Additional contents include highlighting military strategy objectives of various countries and key military doctrine documents produced by these countries.

Knowledge, Perception, And Attitudes Of Library Personnel Towards Preservation Of Information Resources In Nigerian Federal University Libraries, Samson Oyeniyi Akande

This paper investigated the relationship among preservation knowledge, perception and attitude of library personnel towards preservation of information resources in Nigerian federal university libraries. Simple random sampling technique was used to select twenty university libraries from the twenty four federal university libraries in Nigeria. All the 660 library personnel in the selected libraries constituted the study sample. Data was collected by a questionnaire administered on the 660 personnel out of which 510 copies were returned. The response rate was 77.3%. The study found that knowledge and perception of library personnel about preservation of information resources correlate significantly with their attitude …

The population for the study was 78 postgraduate Masters and PhD students of the Department of Library and Information Science, Delta State University, Abraka. Due to the small population the entire population was used as the sample. The analysis of the data collected revealed that there is a low level of skill in the use of ICT among the selected respondents; the Internet via Cybercafé is the most used medium in sourcing electronic materials; respondents exhibit a very low experience in sourcing electronic materials; there is a high level of electronic resource usage regardless of gender difference by respondents. The purpose of this study is to provide an examination of reference librarian duty equivalents in other careers, to provide a calculation of the weighted worth in wages culminating in a recommended hiring salary. The study proposes other job titles whose duties relate to portions of the reference librarian’s day, providing a calculated view of the duties’ weighted worth after close examination of the US Government Bureau of Labor Statistics web site at www.bls.gov and their presentation of wage earnings data collected May 2006 and then posted to their web site April 2007.
