Creating Instruction "To Go": Maximizing Resources, Maximizing Impact, Judith M. Arnold, Veronica E. Bielat

Faced with large scale instruction demands, librarians are turning to technology to maximize staff resources and extend the impact of instruction. In this presentation, participants will learn how to translate classroom instructional content into learning objects in order to make learning available to multiple users on the go. The authors will engage the audience in a series of presentations, demonstrations, interactive tasks, and discussion in order to learn how to create effective learning objects.

This presentation was delivered at the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) 14th National Conference on March 14, 2009 in Seattle, WA.

Librarians in federal universities in Nigeria have had academic status since 1993. They have a research and publication requirement for promotion, and are prominent in the professional literature. While the terminal degree remains the master's in library and information science, it is increasingly common for a doctorate to be required for librarian promotion in Nigerian universities. One problem with this requirement is the small number of doctoral programs in library science that are available. A survey of academic librarians was conducted. The Champlain College Library asked students from our Electronic Game Design Program and the Emergent Media Center to create a game to complement our Information Literacy (IL) program. Little did we know that this collaboration would lead us to question and re-envision what we mean by information literacy. Through the library-student collaboration, it became clear to the Library that words like authority, credibility, reliability, and currency were being used superficially. Challenges and opportunities presented by the HEC National Digital Library programme (NDLP) are presented. The case of the University of the Punjab represents the major challenges faced by LIS professionals in the use and awareness of this programme. The study is based on the interviews with library professionals working in the Punjab University Library, relevant issues as described in local literature, and researchers' observations and experiences. A diagnostic-cum-prescriptive approach is used in discussing and making conclusions.

With the advent of Web 2.0 technologies, user participation in the description and evaluation of content has come to the library. User tagging is almost a given in applications such as Del.icio.us, Flickr, and LibraryThing. The question is whether tagging provided by users with their own motivations is better in some sense then descriptions provided by professionals. Is the tagging provided by the wisdom of the crowd a better description of an item?

The Anchor: 2009

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The purpose of this research is to examine the current state of the practice of information technology use among academic and research libraries in order to gain insight into the level of maturity of various emerging technologies such as the Institutional Repository (IR) to be used to provide descriptive guidance and context to other institutions considering them for application. This research uses a case study methodology involving a single case design with multiple units of analysis, and draws evidence from individual interviews of research and education libraries chosen from a range of sizes, foci, and jurisdictions. This resource provides information about select journals' policies related to the NIH Public Access Policy. Many of these journals are based in the social sciences and publish population research articles. Authors who publish in a journal listed below can quickly determine whether the publisher has a policy, who must submit the manuscript and which version to submit to PubMed Central, as well as the embargo period. Journal titles were gathered from the ISI Journals Citation Reports in the subject categories of Demography, Sociology, Economics, and Gerontology.
