University Libraries Faculty Research & Creative Works

Evaluating e-courses can be difficult task, because there are a myriad of skills and knowledge that must be applied to the evaluation activity. Similarly, finding an evaluation tool that can be used with different types of courses has been challenging. The complications emerge when evaluation tools have confusing definitions, along with different units of analysis and methodologies. This paper discusses the methodology used to refine an e-course usability evaluation tool. The resulting tool can be used to evaluate e-courses and would assist in informing the creation of a usability tools for a variety of e-learning products.

Ingesting Tei Metadata Into Encore At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln: Tei/Encore Task Force Report--University Libraries, June 2009, Charity Martin, Stacy Rickel, Laura Weakly, Elaine L. Westbrooks

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: White Papers

In January 2009, a library task force was formed to inform the digital asset management group about which dates from a TEI record should be used in an Encore record. While investigating this issue, the taskforce encountered a host of other issues that they did not anticipate but were addressed in this report.

This report documents the key problems that emerged as a result of the Cather and Lewis and Clark harvesting. Before and after metadata is ingested quality control is necessary. Responsibility for quality control rests with all library departments. The key recommendations for Encore quality control are:

The Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom Hierarchy And Its Antithesis, Jay H. Bernstein Jun 2009

The Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom Hierarchy And Its Antithesis, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

The now taken-for-granted notion that data lead to information, which leads to knowledge, which in turnleads to wisdom was first specified in detail by R. L. Ackoff in 1988. The Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom hierarchy is based on filtration, reduction, and transformation. Besides being causal and hierarchical, the scheme is pyramidal, in that data are plentiful while wisdom is almost nonexistent. Ackoff’s formulalinking these terms together this way permits us to ask what the opposite of knowledge is and whether analogous principles of hierarchy, process, and pyramiding apply to it. The inversion of the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom hierarchy produces a series of opposing terms (including misinformation, error, …

Reference Universe, Sue Polanka Jun 2009

Reference Universe, Sue Polanka

University Libraries' Staff Publications

One of my favorite things about being a reference librarian is me reference collection. I love perusing the subject encyclopedias for unique content and enjoy watching my collection grow, both in prim and e-book formats. However, I find it difficult to keep up with the resources in this valuable collection. Luckily, I found a tool that not only helps me remember these great tides but unlocks them for me, exposing articles and ideas I may not have considered. My tool is Reference Universe, from Paratext, an index for the articles inside the reference collection, providing access points not found in …
