We present a system which applies text mining using computational linguistic techniques to automatically extract, categorize, disambiguate and filter metadata for image access. Candidate subject terms are identified through standard approaches; novel semantic categorization using machine learning and disambiguation using both WordNet and a domain specific thesaurus are applied. The resulting metadata can be manually edited by image catalogers or filtered by semi-automatic rules. We describe the implementation of this workbench created for, and evaluated by, image catalogers. Playaway devices were developed in 2005 by Findaway World LLC. (http://store.playawaydigital.com/). A Playaway is described as a “self-playing digital audio book” and is a device that contains a pre-loaded audio file in a proprietary format called ACELP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_Code_Excited_Linear_Prediction). The device requires one AAA battery and a set of earphones for playback and listening. Playaways contain almost exclusively spoken word recordings, but some musical content is available as well. According to the distributor, the focus of Playaways will remain audiobooks. Given the nature of a Playaway device, these materials include aspects of both sound recordings and electronic resources. Marketing First Impressions: Academic Libraries Creating Partnerships And Connections At New Student Orientations, James G. Rhoades Jr., Arianne Hartsell

Academic libraries look for successful marketing strategies to promote positive perceptions among students. To do this, librarians need to find venues and partnerships outside the library. Florida State University Libraries discovered that participating in new student orientation networking sessions creates opportunities to generate lasting first impressions among incoming freshmen and their families. After analyzing three years of successive student and family evaluations, which measured presentation rankings and attendance, the library was able to determine the utility and effectiveness of participating in the orientation program. Related literature and an analysis of the evaluations both indicate that universities and students benefit when …

The Significance Of School Libraries In The Educational Development Of Students: The Case Of Novena University Staff School, Kwale, Delta State, Nigeria, Queenette Udoh-Ilomechine

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

School libraries have an important role in encouraging reading and discovery among students and in augmenting teaching. They do these things with strong collections, instruction and orientation, and providing a physical environment that is conducive to learning. This article reports on a study of secondary school students in Nigeria. Students were surveyed on their use of the school library and their views on collections and services. The results showed widespread dissatisfaction with the collections and a lack of instruction and other services.

This manuscript examines the intellectual, cultural, and practical approaches to science and engineering education as a part of the land-grant college movement in the Midwest between the 1850s and early 1900s. These land-grant institutions began and grew within unique frontier societies that simultaneously cherished self-reliance and diligently worked to make themselves part of the larger national experience. College administrators and professors encountered rapidly changing public expectations, regional needs, and employment requirements. Students' Perception Of The Impact Of User Education On The Use Of Reference Resources: An Iranian Experience, Mahdi Mohammadi, Alireza Isfandyari Moghaddam, Mehri Ezadi Yeganeh

This research examines students' familiarity with reference resources as well as the necessity of providing user education based on students' point of view. A sample of 351 students were given a questionnaire of 22 questions. Findings show that students find user education necessary and beneficial, and that students would like to see expert and professional librarians in the reference department.

The Strategic Plan is a standard blueprint guiding library assessment activities. Many, if not most, Strategic Plans are organized along library departmental lines and/or library functions, and use language with which librarians frame their efforts—not language with which patrons would necessarily resonate. In an effort to drive home the concept that it is “impact on the patron” which should be the touchstone for all we do, the UNLV Libraries Dean and Assessment Librarian have created a framework which turns the Strategic Plan document on its head, making it patron-centric. This presentation, delivered at the ExLibris Users Group of North American (ELUNA) 2008 annual conference, was a case study of the New Hampshire History Digital Collections project at the University of New Hampshire Library. The collections are drawn from a variety of sources, including legacy digitized state documents and local histories, newly digitized and transcribed American Civil War manuscripts, and books scanned in conjunction with the Open Content Alliance. Topic included included legacy collection migration into DigiTool, METS implementation, project workflow, and collection level DigiTool interface customization.

While digital virtual worlds have been used in education for a number of years, advances in the capabilities and spread of technology have fed a recent boom in interest in massively multi-user 3D virtual worlds for entertainment, and this in turn has led to a surge of interest in their educational applications.
