The article talks about the public library trustees appointed by local funding agencies of the library system in the U.S. The funding agencies in Henry County, Georgia are the Board of Commissioners and the Board of Education. Trustees have a library director who has an advanced degree in library science and who has participated in ongoing staff development activities to learn new tricks and trends. They also have fellow board members and a state library agency, which is the Georgia Public Library Service. Important factors to remember about the responsibilities of trustees are mentioned.

Eames Scholarship Fund Set Up At Waycross College

The article presents information on the Eames Scholarship Fund created for students of Waycross College in Ware County, Georgia. The scholarship fund was established by Charles B. Eames Jr, former director of the Okefenokee Regional Library System (ORLS), to honor the memory of his parents and to benefit students majoring in library science, information studies or related fields. Students experiencing financial difficulties are also eligible to benefit from the scholarship. James Willis, president of the Waycross College Foundation, is looking forward to seeing many students of its institution benefit from the scholarship.

University And Public Libraries Receive Connecting To Collections

The article reports that 21 libraries, museums and archives in Georgia have been selected to receive the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Connecting to Collections Bookshelf. According to Dr. Anne-Imelda Radice, director of the IMLS in Washington, D.C., the bookshelf provides museums, libraries and archives essential instructions on how to rescue treasures of yesteryear that they hold in trust. The contents of the bookshelf were selected by a blue-ribbon panel of conservation experts. The bookshelf includes an essential set of books, online resources and a user's guide that can profoundly affect the ability of small libraries and museums …

Public Libraries 'Just Buggy' For 2008 Summer Reading Program

The article presents information on the highlights of the 2008 Summer Reading Program, entitled "Catch the Reading Bug," for public libraries in Georgia. The objective of the Worth County Library System (WCLS) is to increase the participation of teenagers. The Houston County Public Library System (HOUPL) has added teenagers as a new component to its Summer Reading Program. Dragon NaturallySpeaking is voice-activated software that allows users to communicate with a computer by means of their voice rather than their keyboard. The software’s aim will make anyone who failed Keyboarding 101 giddy with delight. Forgo typing, be it for a document, an e-mail or instant messaging. Dragon listens to your voice and records your composition faster than you can type. After a brief, 15-minute training and tutorial session, during which Dragon listens to the user and he or she learns commands to navigate within Dragon, you are ready to start using the program.

Web-Based Citation Management Compared To Endnote: Options For Medical Sciences, Melissa Gomis, Carole Gall, Frances A. Brahmi

The authors of this article analyzed the differences in output when searching MEDLINE direct and MEDLINE via citation management software, EndNoteX1^®, EndNoteWeb^®, and RefWorks. Several searches were performed on Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed directly. These searches were compared against the same searches conducted in Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed using the search features in EndNote X1, EndNote Web, and RefWorks. Findings indicated that for in-depth research, users should search the databases directly rather than through the citation management software interface. The search results indicated it would be appropriate to search databases via citation management software for citation …

Machine readable files of the complete corpus of recognized American Indian treaties, derived from Charles Kappler’s multi-volume Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties and a few additional sources, were obtained from the Oklahoma State University Library Electronic Publishing Center and converted for text analysis with TokenX, a web application developed at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Center for Digital Research in the Humanities. The analysis and visualization capabilities of TokenX reveal the diversity of the terms found in these 375 treaties, and the observed frequencies offer a prospect upon legal thought of the times and upon the vocabulary used to express the …

The decline in the number of face-to-face reference transactions has implications that are of concern to librarians, as well as the faculty and students we serve. A strategy to address this is to take reference to locations that are “more convenient” for users – locations where they already work, study and gather.

Three reference librarians shared their experiences with offering services in non-library settings, such as a faculty office building, a computer lab in a classroom, a student lounge, and a departmental library room. Wayne State University’s Office for Teaching and Learning (OTL) co-hosted an all-day symposium called Virtual Citizenship. This symposium was part of an ongoing, multi-faceted study of the intersection between information technologies and the practice of citizenship. The OTL, with the help of the New Media Consortium, was able to provide the resources and technical knowledge needed to produce this forum while showcasing new technologies. Prominent speakers presented their views and research live in the university’s auditorium and simultaneously via video streams into Second Life and the university’s web site.
