Trading Libraries: Off With A Roar, But Will It Soar?, Amy Geisen, Carol Waggoner-Angleton

The article focuses on Trading Libraries, a program originally proposed by Callie McGinnis, dean of libraries at Columbus State University. Its goals are that librarians and staff would receive a healthy and beneficial dose of professional development experience and make new professional connections to strengthen the library network. The program had these basic guidelines which includes a participant would shadow their counterpart from another University System of Georgia library and the participant could be a librarian or staff member.

Knowledge-Based Information Resource Management System For Materials Of Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor, Sean Hsieh

Reactor Campaign (TRP)

In the development of advanced fast reactors, materials and coolant/ material interactions pose a critical barrier for higher temperature and longer core life designs. For sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) such as the Experimental Breeder Reactors in Idaho and the Fast Flux Test Facility in Hanford, experience has shown that qualified structural materials and fuel cladding severely limits their economic performance.

Liquid sodium has been selected as the primary coolant candidate for the Advanced Burner Reactor (ABR) of the Global Nuclear Partnership (GNEP). Materials improvement has been identified as a major thrust to improve fast reactor economics. Researchers from universities, national …

A hallmark of school library media best practice is for the library media center to be open and accessible to patron use before, during, and after the school day and throughout the entire school year. Anecdotal evidence and informal discussion among school library media specialists indicate that library media facilities are sometimes used for activities unrelated to the mission of the school library media program in the school. These activities may close the library media center to regular patron use for all or part of the school day. This study surveyed school library media specialists in two states and examined …

In order to take the temperature of the academic library community with regard to external search boxes, the authors visited 111 academic ARL Library web sites on October 9th, 2007. In visiting each homepage, a record was kept detailing the presence and type of search boxes appearing at the top level. The resulting data paints an interesting portrait of diverse approaches, congruencies, and innovation. Globally this measure strikes to the core of current technological challenges with library search and web site design.

Building A Bridge From The Research Office To The Moon, Linda M. Galloway

Creating an information services “bridge” – from the library to another department within an institution - serves as a conduit for exchange of resources and ideas. This bridge will strengthen the information services department and solidify its purpose as an integral part of the institutional whole. Within our small campus library, we were able to create a librarian position that links Moon Library to the Office of Research Programs in a mutually beneficial relationship. Hidden Under A Bushel? Evangelical Journals In An Era Of Web-Based Communications, Gregory A. Smith

Evangelicals face significant obstacles as they seek to make their publications accessible to potential readers. This study measures the extent to which evangelical scholarly journals have made their contents available in electronic form. Thirty-five journals – all active, refereed, evangelical in perspective, and published in English – were chosen for analysis. Two serials management tools and individual journal Web sites provided data regarding electronic accessibility. Twenty-six of the journals are available in some electronic form – most commonly in one or more aggregated databases. Navigating The Assessment Current: Developing An Information Literacy Assessment Program, Kimberley Wilcox

This article begins with an introduction to the concepts and terminology frequently used in the literature of assessment, especially as it applies to the assessment of information literacy by academic librarians. The article then describes the benefits and drawbacks of various techniques used to assess information literacy, with the recommendation that a comprehensive assessment plan must include multiple forms of assessment to balance the drawbacks of individual techniques. After a discussion of information literacy efforts at Azusa Pacific University, the author offers advice to librarians just beginning the process of developing an information literacy assessment plan.

As literature about Christian librarianship accumulates, I hope a clearer understanding will emerge. Gregory A. Smith’s Christian Librarianship: Essays on the Integration of Faith and Profession (2002) has given a good start to defining Christian librarianship.

Purpose: The ACRL Competency Standards related to learners’ values and value systems has not been interrogated in relation to information literacy theory or practice. This paper analyzes the inclusion of values in these and other guidelines and seeks evidence of the development of this topic in the literature.

Design/Methodology/Approach: A comparative review of information literacy standards related to values/value systems was conducted. An analysis of the literature engaging issues related to personal or community values related to information was completed. Suggestions for continued work were based on these findings.

The article reports on the expansion and renovation of Georgia Southern University's Henderson Library. The Zach S. Henderson Library has been the hub of academic life at Georgia Southern University for more than 30 years. The library has been the focus of an extensive expansion and renovation to help meet the needs of the university's growing student body. The first phase of the $22.75 million project opened on October 1, 2006. The original building included 109,515 square feet of space. In order to assess the Library's collection, the Collection Development Assessment Team at Cleveland State University used focus groups to complement the information gathered in LibQUAL+™. Groups of undergraduates, graduates, and faculty participated in four separate focus groups. All groups reported they were essentially satisfied with the collection but also wanted better local collections and used OhioLINK to supplement their research; fewer users also utilized the rich resources of the public library systems. My Own Private Library: A Peek Inside The Personal Library Of A Librarian, Chris Carroll

The author describes his own personal library. His father was a constant reader, and when he was young all of their books were kept on long, two-shelf bookcase in his bedroom. His personal library started with the works of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, but in the mid-1970s, two books shaped his mind. The first two adult novels he ever bought with his own money were "Carrie," by Stephen King and "Jaws," by Peter Benchley. In the last couple of years, he have been collecting crime noir books by Ken Bruen, Charlie Huston, Dennis Lehane and others.

Spotlight On Construction: Forsyth County Public Library Unveils Expansion, Renovation

The article unveils the expansion and renovation of Forsyth County Public Library in Georgia. A 15,000-square-foot Administrative Office facility was added to the Cumming Library building which provide space for headquarters staff. The new design scheme features mahogany furnishings, traditionally styled, such as end panels and the circulation desk. The children's area doubled in size and large murals were painted on two walls. The biggest challenge of the renovation was moving the collection and shelving to lay new carpet.
