Information Literacy is an important component of library and information organizations at the local, regional, national and international level. From the newly formed Science and Technology Section’s (STS) Information Literacy Committee to the long standing Instruction Section (IS), both of which are within the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Division of the American Library Association (ALA), the level of functionality varies. This column reviews information literacy/library instruction units in national and international organizations and their various attributes.

Academic librarians have recognized the need for and the benefits of instructional outreach to high schools, but faced with budgetary challenges, increasing workloads, and other pressures, librarians sometimes struggle to determine if and how they can work with high schools. This paper will seek to provide practical direction in considering these questions. Using the library high school outreach program at Kent State University Informed Transitions as a sample case, this paper will share observations, discuss practical considerations, and offer recommendations that will serve to guide academic librarians in determining what role they can play in providing instructional outreach to local …

Active Learning With Interactive Whiteboards: A Literature Review And A Case Study For College Freshmen, Robert Schroeder
Communications in Information Literacy
A well-designed classroom that includes appropriate technology can inspire and support successful instructional design. Interactive whiteboards (IWBs), an example of this technology, have been adopted in Great Britain, primarily in primary and secondary schools. While the literature anecdotally suggests that there are benefits associated with using them in classroom instruction little has been written about their application and efficacy in higher education. The author describes an exercise designed for college freshman, and discusses the benefits of the group work and active assignments engendered by the IWB.

Publishing Original Content In An Institutional Repository, Paul Royster

Institutional repositories (IRs) have been developed and promoted primarily as a means to re-publish scholarly content previously published elsewhere—usually in journals, festschriften, or collections of articles. This essay discusses the use of IRs as the originating publisher of materials not previously published elsewhere, and assesses their potential use as a viable “first resort” for scholarly publication and an already existing alternative to traditional commercial or university presses.

Special Collections and Archives acquired nearly 200 individual and unique issues of the Gulf Beach News in October 2007. These issues represent the largest and most complete run of this newspaper known to exist. They came indirectly from the collection of Walter Pliny Fuller (1894-1973), a native of Bradenton and early pioneer of St. Petersburg who wrote for local newspapers and earned a notable reputation as an amateur local historian. Fuller frequently contributed articles for this newspaper. He also authored two first-person accounts of St. Petersburg history. An investment in continuing education in the area of grantsmanship for a public services librarian has resulted in the teaching of Grant Writing & Research offered at the J. Willard Marriott Library and the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library on the campus of the University of Utah . This has led to an unexpected method of library outreach to the university faculty and to the community at large, promoting the overall collections and services of the libraries on campus.

The notebooks from Dr. Knobil's research laboratories comprise the largest series (X). General Files, Series IV, contains material including correspondence, lectures and speeches from the early 1980s to 2000. It was retained in the alphabetical order it was received. Material in Series II was labeled Harvard and deals primarily with Dr. Knobil's tenure at Harvard University in the 1950s. Material about his Deanship of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston can be found in Series III and IV. See more at MS 096.

Dr. Joseph Lewis Belsky was Chief of Medicine for the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC), a committee formed to study the long-term effects of radiation exposure on the residents of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan, from 1969-1972.
