Abstract

Introduction. In 1999, with no money and no support from any library organization, the author partnered with the International Consortium for Alternative Academic Publication (ICAAP), later renamed the International Consortium for the Advancement of Academic Publication, to found a new electronic journal, The Journal of Southern Academic and Special Librarianship, renamed E-JASL: The Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship in 2002.

Description. This case study is based on the author’s own experiences founding and developing a professional, independent, permanently archived, peer reviewed, open-access, electronic library journal, employing a scholar-led model of publishing. The author’s partnership …

As with all things internet, a lot has changed in a short time. Both Facebook (http://www.facebook.com) and MySpace (http://www.myspace.com) have new features with new implications for library use. We think it is time for another look.

In the fall of 2005, two librarians, a legal research and writing program director, and an instructional technologist at Wayne State University received a grant to create online tutorials introducing novices to the basics of legal research. Tutorials were planned on subjects that the library and the legal research and writing program had traditionally covered jointly via library workshops, coordinated with classroom instruction for first-year law students. I Wonder Who's Using Us Now: Hurricane Katrina's Influence On Use Of Special Collections At The University Of New Orleans Library, Florence M. Jumonville Ph.D.

Hurricane Katrina (August 29, 2005) necessitated the temporary closure of the University of New Orleans, including its Earl K. Long Library.  When the university reopened with a smaller student body, librarians in the Louisiana and Special Collections Department observed that patterns of research use of the collections had changed.  This article analyzes data gathered during eight six-month periods (2003-2007) to compare the number of research queries, the institutional affiliations of the researchers, and the collections that were requested before and after the storm.

Each morning’s work at the Center for Creative Leadership library involves scanning the internet news sources for stories that affect company clients, particularly new business trends and innovations. Two such trends are Web 2.0 and the idea of “third place.” The term “third place” refers to an open, neutral, creative haven for social interaction and collaboration, such as a library or coffee shop. Web 2.0 refers to those new internet technologies that can be used to create virtual “third place” communities through synchronous and asynchronous communication.
