Success Through Collaboration – Two Ohio Library Consortia, Jane Wu, Lois Szudy

Otterbein China Librarians Exchange Program Documentations and Publications

In May 2006, Jane Wu (the System Librarian at Otterbein) and Lois Szudy (the library director at Otterbein) were invited to visit five universities in China to explore the possibility of establishing an exchange program and interlibrary cooperation between Chinese academic libraries and Otterbein College. This presentation was done by Jane and Lois when they visited Shanghai Jiaotong University. The presentation introduced the two library consortiums in Ohio, OPAL and OhioLINK, and what makes OhioLINK and OPAL a success.

The Seeking Of Baby-Feeding Information By Canadian Women Pregnant With Twins, Pamela J. Mckenzie

Objective: to analyse baby-feeding information needs and seeking described by Canadian women pregnant with twins. Design, setting, and participants: in-depth semi-structured interviews with 19 pregnant women were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Transcripts provided the data for discourse analysis of the use of two interpretative repertoires. Measurements and findings: the first interpretative repertoire represented caring for twins as fundamentally distinct from caring for singly-born children and therefore emphasised the commonality of mothers of twins regardless of their background or situation. The second highlighted the uniqueness and individuality of each person. These repertoires intersect with discourses of baby- feeding and good mothering, …

The Extent To Which New Jersey Public Librarians Promote Early Literacy Skills, Kathleen M. Kelley

The purpose of this study was to determine, through the use of a questionnaire, the extent to which New Jersey public librarians were providing and promoting early literacy skills in their weekly preschool storytimes; the use by these librarians of the Every Child Ready to Read early literacy initiative, as well as the ways in which these librarians were accomplishing these tasks. This study also compared preschool storytimes offered by selected public librarians to Head Start programs and local nursery schools for children from birth to age five.

The media specialist uses this tool to manage the media center's collection and ensure that students have access to the best and most up to date accurate information. The purpose of having an automation system was to improve student access to the media center collection. Best Practices is a term dating back to the 1980s that was popularized by business writers, most notably Tom Peters and Robert Waterman in their bestseller In Search of Excellence: Lessons From America's Best Run Companies (1982). Essentially, this term implies success; that certain actions, attitudes, and programs are the most efficient and effective way of doing business and that the same measures can be used with successful outcomes in all similar organizations. But are there really best practices that can help enhance public relations for every type of law library? I believe that there are.

Due to the library reorganization, the Acquisitions Dept. and Federal Depository Librarian were asked to investigate and test the possibility of Acquisitions staff handling current receipt and check-in of federal documents. In August 2005, with a small transition group, the project began. The transition group reviewed the current process and developed a strategy to mainstream receipt and check-in. This presentation will address this process and the resulting procedures and training methods.

Open Access resources (OA) are becoming more important in all types of libraries. Recent discussions on OA have focused on ILS access and availability of MARC records with little attention to a selection process for deciding whether or not to provide access to OA.

The presenters will outline some of the concerns with by-passing conscious selection, show how some services and systems are providing bibliographic access, offer information collected on the availability of finding aids for a group of OA titles, present selection criteria used by some database aggregators that include OA resources, and suggest possible selection process models.

The Hispanic population is rapidly growing in Bridgeton, New Jersey. As the needs of the patrons change, hopefully the libraries are meeting those needs. The purpose of this study was to examine nine public libraries and public school libraries in Bridgeton, New Jersey to determine if they provided access to both Spanish-language and English books in their collections, books that reflect ethnic identities, backgrounds, history, and the culture of the Hispanic and specifically Mexican American population. A cooperative project between two urban academic medical libraries, the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library (George Washington University Medical Center) and the Dahlgren Medical Library (Georgetown Medical Center), was designed to relocate all pre-1980 bound journal volumes to a remote-storage facility. This poster explores the goals, process, and results, both financially and physically, of the collaborative initiative.

Monsters are usually unsympathetic and senseless, preying on humans without provocation or reason. They are completely Other to humanity. Monsters represent forces of nature or divine wrath-things to which humans are powerless to appeal. Defeating monsters is characteristic of heroes, those who surpass normal human limitations. In the traditional monstrous text, monsters are obstacles for the hero.

In contemporary texts, the tables are turned. Sympathetic yet still Other-ed monsters may represent repressed human desires or marginalized people oppressed by the culture of the "hero." The key difference is that these monsters use language. They tell their side of the story …

The purpose of this research study was to determine the attitudes of senior patrons, those age 55 and older, about computer technology at the Cape May County Public Library. The current research examined the practices of collaboration between teachers and school library media specialists. It also examined what levels of collaboration occurred between the two groups and what factors influenced their decisions regarding use of collaborative activities. Two electronic surveys were designed to give the researcher an idea of teachers' and library media specialists' use or non-use of collaboration and to determine what factors influenced the use or non-use of collaboration. Invitations to participate in the library media specialists' survey were posted using two online forums whose members are media specialists. A review of current and related literature showed girls were outscoring boys on reading tests in New Jersey, in the nation and in other countries as well. Students see reading as a feminine activity. Understanding the reading habits of students, particularly male students who read less, is crucial to help students become lifelong learners. By studying reading preferences it may be possible to influence students to read more. This study explores historical and linguistic aspects of Rabelais’ invented catalog for the Library of the Abbey of St. Victor. Contrasting the fictional catalog with an actual catalog of St. Victor’s, it examines why this Abbey was such an apt target, and shows ways in which Rabelais’ catalog explodes concerted efforts by influential scholastics associated with St. Victor’s to corral knowledge into classified schemes. It further offers a linguistic analysis of Rabelais’ mocking of the convention of titling, whose importance had surged with the arrival of mechanized printing. The Anchor: 2006

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
