The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Libraries traffic in information and librarians act as gateways to that inforrnation. One of their key roles involves enabling users io acccess information. This was at one time limited to the written word; however, with the integration of computers into the library, this has expanded to include the virtual word as well. The World Wide Web has presented new and unexplored vistas of informa· tion, and some have said it will replace the need for librarians entirely. lnstead of making librarians obsolete, the virtual world has merely presented a new challenge to librarians. Users coming to our library catalogs are more often looking for materials dealing with particular subjects rather than seeking specific titles or authors. Therefore, when we prepare our catalogs we must take special care to use terminology which will best retrieve this material. We must pay special attention to the "aboutness" of each item in order to select the most precise term.
