Although reference librarians today have much in common with yesterday’s counterparts, their days are much more hectic. Technological advances, changes in law and society, demands from a diverse group of library users, and an increased workload make time and stress management important issues to explore. This article examines reference librarianship in the academic environment, discusses how reference librarianship has changed, and offers suggestions on coping with the stresses those changes have caused.

The purpose of this work is to provide a resource for identifying and locating prestatehood legal materials in Nebraska. Documents and resources are organized in six categories: historical background, state constitution, judicial branch, legislative branch, executive branch, and municipal documents/county records. Where appropriate, an annotation is provided when a resource is discussed; where an annotation is redundant (e.g., session laws), a discussion of the document type is substituted for an annotation. Because materials from this era are often reprinted in multiple resources, some publications contain documents that fit into more than one category; a notation is made in each relevant …

Due to the rapidly changing nature of telecommunications, it is challenging to be able to introduce timely topics into this curriculum. At the same time, educators are challenged with preparing students to function in the workplace where change is a given, as on average workers spend an average of 9.25 hours per week looking for or analyzing data [4]. Initiatives to keep instruction relevant and prepare students to be information literate mandate that students be able to discover, digest, and put into context new information about technologies. This skill is developed and enhanced through the use of research projects. This …

The successful “invasion” of ancient Mesopotamia by explorers in the pay of the British Museum Trustees resulted in best-selling publications, a treasure-trove of Assyrian antiquities for display purposes and scholarly excavation, and a remarkable boost to the quest for confirmation of the literal truth of the Bible. The public registered its delight with the findings through the turnstyle- twirling appeal of the British Museum exhibits, and a series of appropriations of Assyrian art motifs and narratives in popular culture - jewelry, bookends, clocks, fine arts, theater productions, and a walk-through Assyrian palace among other period mansions at the Sydenham Crystal …

The Changing Access To Electronic Journals: A Survey Of Academic Library Web Sites Revisited, Linda Rich, Julie Rabine

This article analyzes the content, organization, and features of academic library electronic journal Web pages and examines major trends that we found. In a replication of a 1997-1998 study, the authors revisited 114 academic library e-journal Web sites from North American universities to see how they have evolved in the past few years. The authors discovered that the Web sites are much more elaborate and sophisticated than just three years ago, and they discuss the four basic organizational models that they see emerging in this field: high maintenance HTML model, new “low maintenance” HTML model, catalog-driven model and database-driven model.

Traditionally, libraries attempted to prove their effectiveness by reporting the number of resources the library bought or subscribed to, of instructional sessions taught, and of reference questions answered, among other statistics. However, libraries are increasingly expected to document student achievement using outcomes assessment. After struggling with outcomes assessment at our own institution for several years, we have found that the most effective way to handle program-level and classroom-level outcomes assessment is to create manageable, realistic assessment tools. Religions United in Action for Community (RUAC) was an interfaith ministerial group organized in 1969 to address social issues in St. Petersburg such as school desegregation, busing, health care, and community displacement resulting from the construction of Interstate 275. Other concerns included casino gambling, pornography, and the emerging Moral Majority movement. The papers were donated by Rabbi David Susskind, the first rabbi of the Congregation of Liberal Judaism in Orlando, and longtime rabbi at Temple Beth-El in St. Petersburg. Historical Fabrications On The Internet: Recognition, Evaluation, And Use In Bibliographic Instruction, John A. Drobnicki, Richard Asaro

Publications and Research

Although the Internet provides access to a wealth of information, there is little, if any, control over the quality of that information. Side-by-side with reliable information, one finds disinformation, misinformation, and hoaxes. The authors of this paper discuss numerous examples of fabricated historical information on the Internet (ranging from denials of the Holocaust to personal vendettas), offer suggestions on how to evaluate websites, and argue that these fabrications can be incorporated into bibliographic instruction classes.

Professionalism In Librarianship: Shifting The Focus From Malpractice To Good Practice, Randy J. Diamond, Martha Dragich

Much of the previous discussion in library literature about professional standards concerns librarian malpractice risks. After explaining why these risks have not materialized, this article examines the role of professional standards in fostering good practice in librarianship. Components of good practice include professional knowledge, core competencies, and professional values.
